All speculation of course but I felt that Smith could see his own form waning and the potential to get squeezed out by Green so he jumped on to the opening role to preserve / consolidate his position in the team. The spin was the opposite but it was only spin IMO.

Webster Hardie young talented guys in form and with a solid 12 months get them in. (India had guys who were net players come in last time win a series and are still in the side. ) Have to be bold.
