He’s the fourth fastest batsman in 147 years of test cricket to 1000 runs, is averaging 91, strikes fast enough (64) without being a slogger or anything remarkable and while naturally for a Sri Lankan he’s done his best work at home and in a series in Bangladesh, his only trip abroad saw him hit a century and two half-centuries in England in three tests.

As I said, ‘At some point.’ I don’t think the era of great test batsmen is at an end by any means.

Literally can’t have done anymore so far. Like I’m not going to assume it will stay the way it is but it’s not been a Vinod Kambli ‘two massive scores’ effort - it’s been a case of making runs almost every time he bats

Of course he does, but blanket statements like Smith/Kohli/Root/Williamson being the last of the great test batsmen could end up being very premature

Even Harry Brook if he learns to stop walking back onto his stumps to off spinners may well become one because he’s got all the other tools.
