Won't fix the howler turnovers by foot he's been doing this year though.
no it won't, but Vlas has been exactly the same coming out of the back half this year as well.

You would hope, taking a bit of the pressure off defensively makes his decision making and skill execution a bit better also.

I think he plays football better when he isn't captain in all honesty. Great bloke for sure, mature, level headed and a good leader.

As Jack said last year on AFL360, the club prefers to have a staggered approach to its retirees.

Lambert, Edwards last season.

Riewoldt, Cotchin and Tarrant all likely end of this season.

Grimes next season.

Think it’s a combination of not losing leaders and experience players at the club in swoop, but also list management at the same time.

Suspect we may see Grimes rested on occasion back end of this season and through next season as well.

How many till his 300th?
85 games to go - might not happen! :p

I don't mind it - we have not had a settled backline for about 12 months I reckon which will not have helped his form + let's face it, as a whole we have not been playing at all too well and so heaps of repeated pressure has been felt by the guys down back.

Like RockJobster0312 posted above, it will keep our retirements staggered....

Another year older, slower, and more fragile.
Has been ordinary this year.
was a great player, not any more
Think he still is but our backline is very different overall to what it was a few years ago

Especially with no Tarrant he’s had young who debuted this year and quite a few games without Broad so he’s having to do a lot more with less and for the most part our defensive unit as a group has held up pretty well

Always room for improvement but it’s under Grime’s leadership that it’s managed to be at a half decent level

It’s no coincidence that Grimes’s output has improved over the last few weeks now that we are getting some consistency down back again

He’s still operating at a under 25% one on one loss rate and that is elite under any metric

Can't begrudge our skipper and premiership star. Hopefully a new backline structure will help him next year as this year hasn't been great for him.

Not sure this is the right call & definitely not sure if this is the right time to be re-signing him. We are bottom 4, he will be 33 during next season & his form has shown a huge amount of decline - a worrying decline for sure, its been spoken about here at length.

Why, as a bottom team, you would re-sign a guy in round 8, who will be 33 years old next season & already showing definite signs of decline...... what was the rush here? why wouldn't you just wait till the end of the year? We are not any chance of top 4, what is to be gained from this?

What if Grimes does a knee this week? at 32 that will basically be the end of his career...... so why not just wait till the end of the season, or at least later in the season, to re-sign him?

Really poor list management for me. No one was going to poach him - why do it now. Now your locked in and he has 16 weeks where he can sustain a long term injury which would mean we are locked into him either way. Just dumb.

Great call by the club !!

Grimes has not had a great year but the entire team has been sh!t and its not just 1 player
We will have 3 older players retiring this year and Tarrant from the backline as well as a possibility of Broad being a free agent
stagger the retirements and 1 more year of Grimes for leadership/depth and stability is the right call while Young , Bauer , Brown develop

Doubt he will be on more than $400k-$450k and would have taken a cut this year

seriously - what kind of theory is that? "Sure he has been bad, but so has the whole team". And its just not accurate. The whole team is not playing bad. And if it is, then surely you must, finally, concede that has to be a reflection of Dimma is doing a poor job.

You continue to hold opinions that are just massively inconsistent. And to be honest, i see your support of any moves that the club is making as a "kiss of death" - as all your support so far for the concept of getting in Tarrant, trading for both Hopper & Taranto - re-signing Cotchin & Riewoldt..... they are all causing this club to fall further & furher into the abyss. Being a "Yes" man/woman does not make you "more loyal" - it just makes you more "compliant"

When you Captain is playing bad & the entire team is playing bad - that is not an excuse for form. ever. The Captain should be leading by example. We know Grimes is about as solid a player for form, ever. He has been incredibly consistent in his career. He is going to be 33 mid-next season and the team is falling off a cliff & so is his form. Considering his form has always been incredibly consistent, you have to believe that the drop in performance is 100% due to an aging body & unless we have some Sith like medical divisions, nothing is going to change that.

Dimma's romance with the golden era is as much of our current problem than the team "playing shit". He is enabling older players who are in career worse form while also alienating young players like Cumberland. While he bags out Cumberland and blames young players for losses, he is also supporting Dustys really poor, wasteful game - re-signing Grimes.... he is showing nil signs of being able to accept that we are in a different stage of the clubs journey. Re-signing a 32 yo in career worse form in round 8 sends a terrible message to the young backman on the list. It was moves like this that made Chol & CCJ leave too. I honestly would have much rather us put Gibcus in that role and let him grow into it.

This strategy will fail, it has to. It has been failing for 3 years & continues to fail. There is no way Dylan Grimes is winning another GF - so what is the point here? How is it a "great move"
?

There is NIL signs so far that Tarrant was a good signing either. He has not played this year & last season was ordinary & ultimately did not change our results in any meaningful way - we finished 7th which "meh". If this continues this club will be back to Ninthmond incredibly quickly - especially once Peggy, Ben, Balme, Dimma leave ......and they all will once the wheels fall completely off in 2024. It could be 3 years at the bottom before we make another finals run.

As poorly as this year is going, it will likely be our best year for wins between 2023-2025. Let that sink in
