AFL Player #20: Peter Wright

Can we just celebrate the fact that Poita is an Essendon player now, scored us two crucial goals last week, and that other snake-headed bastard plays for a different team?

By that biased premise, Wright > Redacted.

Moving on!

Yes I had the dubious pleasure of seeing all his career kicks for goal as well & while he is a beautiful kick of the footy, he's spraying one of those shots, that's just part of the package.
He's a bit like Michael Hurley in that sense.
Hurley kicks these perfectly weighted balls to hard to hit targets, but once a game he has an absolute howler.

I've watched Joe his entire career and know that he doesn't. He's kicked absolutely vital goals all throughout his career, saying otherwise is disengenuous at best.

Say what you will about Joe, but when we needed him to kick high pressure goals he usually delivered.
he usually needed 3 shots to kick one of those high pressure goals

Shut up about Daniher y’all, he’s gone. Just enjoy Wright finding form.

There’s a fair argument he was best afield in the second half of Anzac Day and still it’s just Joe, Joe, Joe.
You can the boy out of the mod, but you can’t take the mod out of the boy.

Or something

He's definately not a vice grip that's for sure, look at a guy like hooker, he literally clamps the ball. Pete seems a bit more flat handed, the ball kinda feathers in for a soft landing... That's ok when you are 2m I guess, not many are reaching you but it does mean any body contact or atm chop will just spill the call free and make you look a bit silly sometimes.

Having said that, I remember when I was a weekend warrior, when I was down on confidence my hands would always soften like that too, maybe it's a subconscious attempt to make sure you grab it rather than the ball flying thru your grasp.

I'm keen to see if he gets the vice clunk now he's confident or if thats his normal

So what you're saying is, we need to transplant Hooker's hands on to Wright?

Or would Hooker's hands be better on Cox?

Or can we not partake in cancelling players for petty reasons?

Daniher ? didn't he play for us in the 80's.

We should be pretty happy with how this project is shaping.

8 games in and he's tended to improve week to week.

Need him to pull down 2 more marks a game (based on the opportunities he currently has).

I like his work rate. Not nearly as slow as he looks, that's the loading gait and legs that are 1.6m long.

He's been a good value acquisition. Solid enough in the ruck and around the ground and has been good for a few goals a game when played forward.
For me the fact that he's got that flexibility to swing into the ruck makes him very handy because that means we can pair him with any other type of key forward. Eg Jones isn't really a genuine 2nd ruck option and Hooker can barely elevate off the ground these days so he can only forward line ruck ie wrestle. The only guy on our list that is a reasonable chance of taking over the 2nd ruck/key forward role is Bryan (which I could see happening next year eg Hooker retires, our forward line becomes Jones, Wright (secondary option for 2nd ruck / forward) and Bryan (preferred 2nd ruck/forward).

Plus he's a really nice kick at goal so tends to make the most of his opportunities even if he doesn't create as many as other players.

I'm a fan of his work and I could see him being our 2nd or 3rd tall forward for years yet. No development required. Plug and play for a 4th rounder and some salary cap. Nice bit of trading I'd say.
