AFL Player #20: Peter Wright

It's not physical opponents, usually he beats them. It's athletic and tall opponents that he struggles with.
He literally got shoved aside multiple times. One time he was embarrassingly put on his arse. He needs space to run and jump. If he’s forced into wrestling, it’s all over for him

So does that mean Wright is not cut out to be a No 1 key forward? That means he doesn’t need help, it means we need to find a No 1 so he can be a No 2 or 3
I don't think you can read much into Wright individually today, other than we are too easy to defend as a team when we only target the one player with every entry.

You talk about 2 and 3 but there was no one presenting as a 2 or 3 option today. Expecting him to dominate when an entire defence is set up to mitigate him and no other offensive threat is posing any doubt in the defenders mind is unrealistic.

Yes, he still had a down game all that aside but those happen from time to time.

Yes it was a shambolic performance all around from the team, I don’t pin it all on Wright

But a supposed no 1 mature KPF cannot get physically beaten as easily as that in 1v1 contests I’m sorry. It’s not the first time it’s happened, it just happened multiple times today

His weakest games have been against Freo (Pearce), Port (Aliir), Richmond (Balta), Carlton (Young)

Darcy Moore took him to the cleaners on Anzac Day. My problem with Peter is that he rarely gets front position and too often fails to compete hard enough. When things are going well he fires but he doesn't often create his own opportunities.

He's fine, just not the kind of forward that can play a lone hand up front.

Think Hawkins or JJ Kennedy at their best where they draw extra defenders.

Wright isn't that level, but with a decent CHF alongside him he's a perfectly good forward.

It's not really about 'ranking' them, if we had two targets up front that were viable marking and scoring threats it makes for a functional forward-line.

J Reiwoldt pre-Lynch or Hawkins pre-Cameron could basically play one out as a KPF without support, very few players are able to do that reliably.

Harry Jones 'could' be that guy if he's fit, has scope to get up around 40 goals / year IMO given he's going at ~ 1.5 goals / game already.

Gets chopped a bit and can't buy a free either.
It's ok, our CEO & president are putting intense pressure on the AFL at multiple levels to influence the umpires' department and the rules of the game committee.

This weekend you will see the umps suddenly go massively, surprisingly hard on anyone chopping the arms because we have been so effective at advocating for the AFL to look out for one of our players who hasn't had a fair go.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA

I thought Wright played better when Phillips and Jones were in the team. Having the extra experienced ruck up forward and also Jones running around would have spread the load a bit more up forward.

If you had told me this guy is gonna kick 50 goals for the year at the start of the season, I would have ripped your arm off when shaking your hand.

Not perfect but he needs help and another competent Key Forward next to him. Some quality ball coming in would be good too, just quietly.
The quality ball going inside 50 is no doubt an issue but I watch him closely and he doeesn't do himself any favours. Often stuck behind defenders and struggles to get any distance on them on his lead so often sits back and calls for it on top of his head.

Further more to this point, I feel he would be very Essendon where his best is competition wide very good, but will only last for a short period of time.

I doubt he is still kicking 50 goals a year in 2028 kinda thing.

I agree in so much that I don't think he'll be kicking 50 goals a year regularly. But I do think he's proven that he is good enough to be one of our two key forwards going into the future (which was still very much up for debate going into this season).

I think he'll be a reliable 35+ goal a year player for the next say 4 years so approx 2+ goals per game assuming reasonable runs with injury.

We will probably look back at this year and say it was his best goal kicking year as an individual. I don't expect him to be kicking over 50 too often but either way he's still made giant strides forward in his game this year.

he needs to improve a fair bit to be an AA player. he was good this year. very good for us. but league wide - about a B grade forward.
He was never going to get into the side, however across the league, there are 3 guys who hve more goals and assists combined than him. Cameron, Hawkins and Curnow. He should be in the squad.

oh well. hopefully he gets better and makes it next year. his off 1v1 win% is pretty poor compared to the other top forwards - ie. Hawkins in 46%, Wright is 21%

i'd say he's behind King, Lynch and Buddy as well
