Sewell was shopped at a very different stage of his career though. He hadn't established himself as a senior player as yet, never mind coming off a career best year.
Let me repeat myself. I’m not going to assume Howes place in or out of the side just because we shopped him.

Sewell said yes to a trade to Melbourne
Ryan Ferguson said no to a trade to Hawthorn

Howe was a "best 22" under Clarko

We don't know Sam's best 22.
Yes but we know from training that we haven’t moved any of the half back flankers to the wing. So it looks like it will come down to Howe, Morrison, Phillips, ward and MacDonald unless something changes. I was happy to rotate half back flankers through the wing and go with maybe one specialist wingman but that doesn’t appear to be the way we are going to structure the side. I’m guessing 2-3 of the above players will be in the 22 most weeks.

Surprised that it doesn't look like we're opting to rotate HBFs through the wing, considering the abundence we have. Makes the back 6 selection more curious.

I think Sam won't be afraid to experiment a fair bit this season, especially if there aren't many early wins, so the wing positions might see quite a bit of change.

I'd add Bramble to that with Connor Downie a smokey based on form. They may even push Shiels to a wing to provide more on-ball opportunity to guys like Finn, Ward, etc.

Lots of unanswered questions re Sam's structure and preferred players. I expect he will have favourites or a strategy. I hope it is to focus on the players who will be in our next flag team and not go for more experience to win a few extra games. I would hope to see at least two of the following getting a game each week: Ward, McDonald, Brockman, Butler, Saunders, Finn and Downie.

Like you, I’d have thought bramble to the wing was a given but he hasn’t been training there. Downie could also play there but I still think we are going to see 2-3 of the above list playing most weeks as they represent the core of our elite endurance and are all capable of winning a good level of the ball as wingman.

I think we will know more once cj and day are back in the main group. Their absence could be the reason we aren’t seeing bramble and impey (who is also injured) not playing wing. But we aren’t going to be too light on for elite endurance and none of those players can match the group I named. Not yet anyway.

Gary Rohan has played in 3 grand finals. Plenty of players who aren’t shooting the lights out that are one of the first players picked because the fill a need. To me he’s still one of our best defensive/negating midfielders we have and is 4 years younger than Shiels and on an upward trajectory production-wise.
Are you sure? I don't remember seeing him out there.

Was Howe toast from the day we recruited him or has that tag been added more recently?
He started off as bread and then he was cooked with injury for a couple years, and now he's toast.

The players in the premiership side dubbed Howe “the future” at one stage. Not sure how tongue it in cheek it was, but there was talk that he was going to be that bigger bodied mid, to counter players like Fyfe.

He’s never hit the heights that they thought he would.

Howe was excellent from the first bounce to the last. Spent time at half back and on the wing and was effective everywhere he went. I have him playing round 1.

From Axeman’s latest intraclub match report. I think those waiting for Howe’s demise might be continuing to wait.

What if Sam Mitchell as coach ends up being the best thing for Howe, whether it is because of him or just having some freedom to not second guess his decision making? Idno but he sounds like his flying

Slight correction…he hasn’t hit the heights, yet. He is training the house down so naturally if he plays well in the practice matches the lid will be off and the band wagon full and we will all be declaring that the future has arrived 🤪

Watching him play at Box Hill as a young player, I thought he was a pretty good chance of being a very good player for Hawthorn for years. Seemed like he could find that bit of space required to put the ball to the advantage of a teammate. Clearly had the size to mix it with the bigger midfielders. Just didn't go on with it like I thought he would.
