armfield is a funny one do we keep him on or play a kid in his role?
this year he has got about a goal a game which is good for a half forward flanker, his papers were stamped I felt pre season but he has proved me wrong,
I'd keep him on a year to year deal. Skills not the best (not the worst) but you know he always give 100% has speed and brings energy.

I would prefer to keep Giles... maybe move him to the rookie list at the end of the year and give him another 12 months to recover fully.

He was rated in his draft year as a quality tall defender and I would like to see him spend some time in the VFL over the next 18 months and see where he is at the end of next year. From what I have heard, he is back running again and rebuilding that calf muscle he lost from his 10 months in a moonboot.

Would prefer to see Giles given more time as well - but there is definitely a question-mark over him.

is this the irish boys 3rd year on the rookie list? meaning they have to be on the main list next year?

if so we have to cut quite a few extra spots as wood will move up onto the list aswell, an I can't see us getting rid of any of our rookies this year even BJ...

wood Warnock swap on the rookie list maybe

Depends on the AFL's mercy. They review retired contracts and see if they should waive the salary cap room or not.

If a player is legitimately injured they often can (T. Croad) was an example I remember

But if theyve entered into the contract with that injury over their head sort of thing or it looks like they are trying to extort the system they wont (like how they told Sydney they would not take Buddys money off their cap if he got injured)
Buddy's situation is different. He went as a restricted free agent and Hawthorn had the opportunity to match the Swans offer. This is why it has to be included in the salary cap for the period of the contract.

Nope, second year on the list.

Same draft period as Cripps. So am expecting big things this year :)

Enjoyed watching Hayden Crozier's game last night, think he adds a bit of x factor and spring up forward.

Reminded me of a young Dale Thomas.

Would love to try and involve him in any deal for Yarran (if that happens). However, im not sure Freo would want to deal him and their first round pick (~19).... and I also don't think SOS would be interested in such a late selection for Yaz.

"Each club is allowed to maintain a list of up to six eligible Category A rookies and three Category B rookies. Up to three rookies can be retained, with the player's permission for a second or third season,[2] with the others having to be either delisted or elevated to the primary list at the time of the National Draft. Only half of the salary paid by a club to players on the rookie list counts towards the league's salary cap."

Just looked up the rules for rookies.

We currently have Byrne, Sheehan & Wood all pretty much guaranteed a spot next season.
If I read this correctly Johnson, Walsh, Fields, Gowers and Russell are under the pump, although there may be a variation for
Byrne and Russell being category B. Pretty much all of these have displayed upside.

Surely then we are looking at a likely 3 elevations.
I am expecting a renaissance of performance over the last half of the season, and have never subscribed to the theory that our
list is substandard.

Realistically we need room for 3 elevations and at least 4 live picks in the draft (KPP, Mid, SOSOS and Rice/Ruck/Small Forward)

Given our contract situation, we are going to have some undeserved delistings.

Judd, Warnock likely, Carrazzo retire(maybe), Watto (been done to death and Jones has a contract), Ellard(unlucky), maybe Walker injury driven retirement.

Who else? Armfield current best 22, White current best 22, Giles recovering from LTI, developing kid like Holman, Curnow uncontracted yet?

Tough questions unless we do trade Hendo and/or Yarran or allow Kreuzer to go as FA

I guess on some level, it's a good thing that there are going to be some unlucky players come year's end. It may mean that it has become just that little bit harder to break into the senior 22 and competition like that can't be a bad thing. Best thing about the current situation is that there doesn't appear to be any undeserving players in the senior team, where as earlier in the season that may have been harder to argue.

Not sure if his name has been mentioned but what about trying to deal with Adelaide for Daniel Talia. Barracked for Carlton as a kid (where have I heard that before) and a Melbourne boy.

Was on SEN the other morning and think he said he is free-agent next year? If SOS could 'shake his tree' maybe we do Yarran-Talia deal where both sides get some a benefit prior to losing a player to free agency for potentially nothing.

Yes please. Wasn't he AA last year? Don't think Adelaide would do it though.

Agree, from what I have seen of Giles in the SANFL I would say he is definitely worth persisting with

To be replaced:

Judd
Carazzo?
Warnock?
Walker?
Giles?

There's our 4 live draft picks and a Rookie pick.

If you want to get rid of Ellard, Armfield, Watson, Johnson, Russell etc. where do we get replacements from? I'd prefer to retain a few of these guys for another year as depth (eg. Armfield and Ellard on exposed form), or in the hopes that under a new coach they can develop further (Watson, Johnson), and only get rid of them when we can pick up a good prospective player to fill their spot. Otherwise you're just replacing depth players with late late late draft picks or rookies, or you've got to hit free agency pretty hard.

You want to turn over another 10 players? Who comes in for them?
Surely we can find some more types like Tutt, Jones, Whiley etc....:straining:

Next year will be Talia's 7th year at Adelaide so he won't become a free agent until the end of 2017 and even then he will be a restricted free agent if he is in the top 25% of wage earners at Adelaide.

Re rookie Lucas for 2017 Talia trade:D

And that is exactly why we shouldn't be too gung-ho about delisting our depth players - we end up in a situation where we have to recruit cast-offs from other clubs. Tutt and Jones were gap-fillers after we lost Eddie, Garlett and Waite, they were the best we could manage with the limited resources we had, and I suspect the plan was for their 2-3 year contracts to cover us until out current and next batch of draftees were developed.

Whiley was steak-knives, and depsite that I actually have a good feeling about his prospects long-term.

I'm all for moving on the list-cloggers, but I think we can afford to spread it over a couple more years and replace them with top-end draft picks and useful free agents once the foundation is set.

Agree with most but just cant see the list cloggers we have attracting top end draft picks at all.

Probably not clear on my part - I know there's no way we could get a round 1 pick for Ellard!

However we're best to move players on when we have the means to fill the spot on the list with a good/high potential player. End of this season we'd be expecting to replace Judd, Carazzo and Walker, as well as a few of Warnock, Watson, Ellard, Giles, Johnson and Russell. The first three have or probably will retire, while the remaining six are either hampered by injury, or may lack the ability to contribute to our next premiership side.

Without trading, we'll have 4 worthwhile picks in the national draft, and may consider a couple of rookies including a ruckman. So we could feasibly replace Judd, Carazzo, Walker with our first three picks, Wood comes up for Warnock and we rookie a developing ruck. Replacing the others means we're offloading them for 4th round players or later rookie picks.

Next year we may lose Simpson to retirement (50/50) but there shouldn't be anyone else in that category. That would be the time to cut Ellard, Watson, Johnson and maybe Tutt if contracts allow, as we are filling their spots with ND picks.

Unfortunate Blaine Johnson hasn't been able to get another chance at AFL level.

Unfortunately with Blaine Johnson, his performances reach a certain limit that he is unable to exceed. He is a forward line player, and I have not heard him kicking more than 2 goals in a VFL match. With that being the case, it is extremely hard to see him getting a game again this year. Plus, he would need to bulk up and put a little more weight on. I wouldn't be surprised if the club chooses to delist him at the end of the season.
