Went down from work this afternoon and glad I did, got to see the team do two quarters of match simulation. It was very windy so it was scrappy at times but our transition from one end to the other was very fast with a lot of quick kicks from the stoppages gaining a good 40 metres as apposed to trying to dish off a handball. Things that stood out to me:
  • Close is going to run his opponent ragged and he took a great one handed grab over Merrett
  • Harris Andrews will play senior football this year, he took a few strong pack marks and looked very comfortable, not afraid to move the ball quickly
  • Zorko was tearing it up in the middle, clearance machine
  • Redden was very evasive and strong over the ball, looks quicker too
  • Rich will play a pure half back role along with Claye Beams, they both set up the play and transitions beautifully
  • Lester looked comfortable in his new role and will be a lock down back
  • Stefan Martin crumbed a contest from 30m out and snapped a ripping small forward type goal, it was exciting/scary to see
  • Dawson took a nice pack mark in the goal square, plays a lot taller than he really is
  • Aish works very hard both offensively and defensively, kicked a nice running goal from the boundary
My highlight of the day though was Daniel Rich sweeping across half back looking for a lead around half forward, before unloading a 60m spear which hit Billy Evans on the chest and nearly killed him. You could hear the air rapidly exit the ball whilst a massive sternum bruise ensued.

Go Lions!

How did Clayton, McGuinnes and McGrath go?

McGuinness was on the bike I think because he played in the Indigenous All Star game on Friday.

McGrath looked okay, he was playing as a forward crumber but didn't get many opportunities (probably because Stefan Martin was crumbing everything).

Clayton looked strong over the ball, would be a smokey for a debut this year.

Were you sitting next to me on the wing?

EDIT: Beaten
Go Lions!
Thanks for the update, great reading. I've noticed Dayne Beams has rated a mention in many of the training reports to date.

What I also noted was our potential best 22 forward set up:

Staker, Close, McGuane, Robinson, Green & Mayes

I have a feeling Leppa will work with 3 talls in the forward whilst Leuey & Martin play 50/50 ruck rotation whilst the other sits a kick either in front or behind play, resting forward occasionally as well.

If you don't mind answering, how did Dayne go? Heard very little about how he's travelling. Anything stand out about him at training?

**** I'm so damn excited about this coming season. Mostly just to see Rich and C.Beams off the HBF passing the ball lace out onto the chest of any Lions. Where does this leave Adcock? Hopefully we get to see Adcock go back into the guts rotating with Rich or Beams from the HBF.
That is a really good question actually especially if you assume that the backline would be Gardiner, Merrett, C.Beams, Rich, Clarke and Lester then.

Are we going to be able to get running reports on the game Saturday......a Lion and Saint in this household will be most anxious to hear how its playing out.

Anyone going?

Stop it! I have to work for the rest of the week. Zorko tearing it up in the middle had me hyperventilating but the Rich 60 metre spear done it. No chance I'll be doing much but visualising rapid ball movement for the rest of the week. Thanks for the reports WL, quality update.
