The Paine stuff is interesting. As a third tall forward type, he's arguably got the most competition for a spot with any number of guys capable of playing that role in different ways. On the other hand, no-one owns the role so there is a vacancy to be filled.

He's been compared to Darling a few times and the biggest difference between the two would be fitness.

Paine could compliment 2 big key forwards very well.

There you go guys. Full album.

Lions Training 14/11/2014

Morning started off with a few repeat sprints, most of the guys looked sharp, Robbo looks in top nick, he has really come back in good shape.

After that, they split up into teams of 2 that rotated with other guys who would throw the ball down, the 2 guys push and shove, one of them picks it up and dish it off. This happened for a good 20-30 minutes. Blacky was managing this drill and looked to have a better idea of what to do compared to last year.

Then 4 groups were formed, and kicking drills. They rotated around the ground, Gary O'Donnell was managing this, was really loud as well, and most of them hit targets comfortably. Lester still struggled with basic kicks :(. Pretty sure I saw Cutler and Robbo swear at each other after a missed lead or something, good to see the young guys fired up.

After this, just a few laps around the ground. Really surprised to see Paine in the front group with the elite runners like Close, Paparone and Zac O'Brien. He is shaping up to have a big pre-season. In terms of size, Close seems to have bulked up, and McStay looks fitter too.

Aish was just solid all session without being flashy, did the laps in good time, got through the kicking and handball drills with flying colours.

Freeman has bulked up as well, but lagged behind in the time trials. Squizzy Taylor was off to the side doing basic kicking and handball drills, would assume he's being managed.

Harwood and Mayes came over after the session to talk to the fans and mingle with the sponsors, so thought that was pretty nice of them. Lester and Adcock as well.

On the way to the car, got hold of Darcy Gardiner and told him to keep going at it on the field next year and the fans loved his aggression. He replied with "I always do." He reckons Merrett would be playing in defence next year unless we have no forwards, really excited to have Beams and Christensen on board and reckons that will take a lot of pressure off the defence. Jokingly asked him about Carlisle and how he'd feel if he were to join the Lions next year and he said "That'd be a pretty fun reunion, he's a good player."

God I love last year's draft class. Can't wait to head along to the next one with the full group.

Great post and pictures mate! Training reports like these always make the long off season go so much quicker :)

Thanks from me too:)

Two things....who is the tall, lean very dark player, not too familiar with him.

..and, my life is going too quickly as it is but......have we skipped a couple of months while I was having my nana nap?

those pics showed 01 01 2015 on each one.

Default camera date :p

I would say you were talking about Archie Smith, second year Rookie, was going to be a Basketballer but swapped to AFL.

Obviously very early days, but seems to have improved his kicking. Still a long way off aerobically. Consistently in the last few runners. IMO he's tracking pretty well though. Give him another year or, more likely, two.

Two years for Archie - amazing talent .... just needs to get the body shape and game smarts happening.

Some great shots there. Good to see Staker getting amongst it early. Looks like a monster.

Good to about Robbo as well, hopefully he can force his way into our best 22. Star.

Darling has nowhere near the ability of Brown, Riewoldt, Tredrea, etc.

Just works hard.
I would say the talent gap between Brown and Darling is roughly the same as the gap between Darling and Paine.

That's not to suggest Paine is a dud. But Darling is a very good footballer.

I also think that you have understated his football talent - it isn't just work rate that gets him games.

I live about 15 minutes away from Springfield and it was 42 degrees here... I think the weather channel said that Brisbane was about 32 degrees.. if that helps ya.
I live near Yeronga, about 3 k away and it reached 37 as I drove past at around 3.00 this afternoon according to the reading in my car. I hate this heat with a passion.

Nobody, but nobody, actually likes this heat in my experience. You can look down my street at midday- not a cat, dog, person, bird whatever is stirring. Mad dogs and Englishmen and all that.

Worst of all, I'd booked a trencher to put in a new stormwater drain. 12m of absolute purgatory.

it was close to 70% humidity as well so it felt like the 40s for sure. I'd much rather a dry 40 than a mid 30s high humidity day.
