Not much to report for this morning. Basically just improving fitness by continually running repeat 200m's. They also did a little ball work in which they had to get it through some goals by hand while trying to keep it off the opposition. Everyone (new recruits as well) was there except for Rocky, Hanley and I think Clayton. Cian was there and he is all skin and bones at the moment. He was walking laps with Bundy and Sauce. Bewick was well ahead of the front group in the repeat running. Robbo pushed himself too far again and needed to sit out due to the heat. Leuy is looking good as well.

Few members of the hospital group, Squizzy, Bundy, Goose to name a few. Goose was running laps though.

DBeams, Rich, MRobbo, Dizzy, Bourke and CBeams were on restricted duty and spent most of the time on the bikes or watching the others running or handballing.

Lots of voice and plenty of competitive aggression from everyone.
Why is Squizzy in the hospital group? Has he done something?

Robbo's work ethic is outstanding. Come Grand Final day and there is a loose ball with Robbo and his opponent running for it at a crucial point in the game I would be at ease as I know that Robbo would do everything humanely possibly to win.
Which Robbo?

Please say NRob, please say NRob.

I was referring to Nick. Mitch would also do anything for the team. IMO his number one asset is his hardness/determination. Don't underestimate him.
Hopefully he makes hitting targets and getting on the right side of play his number one and number two assets. I am referring to Mitch not Nick.

I'm not underestimating Mitch, just man-crush on Nick.

Your posts make you sound like Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

It's all about cultivating mass with a garbage bag full of chimichangas.

New Brisbane recruit Allen Christensen experienced a swing in emotions on his first official day as a Lion on Monday.

He might have played seven finals — including the victorious 2011 grand final with Geelong — but it did not stop the 23-year-old fleet-footed midfielder from experiencing a few jitters.

Fellow new recruits Dayne Beams and Mitch Robinson completed a 2km time trial at the University of Queensland and did skills drills and a stationary bike session.

“I was a bit nervous coming to meet everyone, to be honest,’’ Christensen said.

“But there’s plenty of boys around the same age as me and a few boys who’ve come through the Geelong Falcons (under 18 program) as well so I’ve been made to feel really welcome.

“I’m just really excited to be a part of what’s happening here in Brisbane.

Just watched the Mayes interview (back on page 3) ... apart from the last question I thought it was a good interview and he came across pretty confidently.

As to 'will you have to change the words of the song since there is no white in there' (or something like that) ... well duh it is a *clash* strip ... and it is not like we are the only club whose song includes the team colours (navy blues, red and white, red and the blue, red white and blue, red gold and blue .... ok that's enough!)

Thought the same thing. That, and it's far from the first time we've had a white guernsey. Really dumb question.

Went along this morning, albeit a pretty late. When I arrived they were in the middle of a drill in which they had to move the ball from a kick in and transition to the other end of the field without turning the ball over. It was good to see DBeams, MRobbo out there participating and Richy hitting 60m down the wing. Archie took a good mark on top of Bourke in which he rode his shoulders all the way to the ground (ping James North) .

They then did some running and some running and more running. McStay is with the second group of runners (Mayes, Reddo and CBeams (I think)). The front group consisted of Close, Paps, NRobbo, RoBew, Tinka and ZOB. DBeams is surprisingly well built in the upper body, big difference to some of our other guys. To me Golby has improved his running capacity after his injury, he was doing really well in the running sessions.

They then broke up into 2 bigger groups for more running. So originally there was 6 groups running then they took the first 3 groups and moved them to the other oval and kept the other 3 to continue running on the larger oval. Golby was the stand out for the guys that stayed on the larger oval and McStay was really good on the smaller oval.

The coaches also went for a run away from the playing group while the fitness staff looked after the players.

Big media turn out by Brisbane standards so expect some articles this afternoon and some interviews as well.

So I went along this morsning too.

A bit of skills stuff to start and then, as mentioned, a bit of match simulation stuff. Not too much to report there as it was token pressure only ("let him take the mark"), although Rich was definitely playing that quaterback role and McStay was up forward. In saying that, Zorko was back pocket for a while, so you probably can't take too much notice of positions.

Then they moved onto the running. Coming from a running background myself, I was actually a bit surprised how easy the running was. 6 x 400m going at about 1:20-25 pace, leaving on the 3 mins. They all pretty much stayed in their groups given the modest pace, except the last group of young, tall players that spread out. Bourke and Smith struggled a bit.

Then they broke up and about 10 players, that I assume needed extra work, did 2 x 3min efforts (missed how long the break was) while the better runners did some fartlek (slow, fast, slow, fast) stuff on the other oval.

Golby was the stand out of the blokes on the main oval, although Justin Clarke, leaving in the group 10 sec behind Golby ran really well in the second one, only Golby and maybe Adcock ran further (he beat Green and Harwood). I also thought Freeman was impressive in the progress he's made. In the games he played this year he looked like he needed to be subbed after running through the banner, but he onlly finished about 5-10 metres behind Green and Harwood and infront of Gardiner. So while I don't think he'll ever have that Brown/Cloke type tank, it at least gives me confidence that he'll be able to have an AFL level tank, which I was concerned about. Smith and Bourke again were miles off the back (at least 150m, which is massive over 3 mins), which particularly for Bourke going into his 3rd preseason, is a bit worrying.

Saw Sarah Kelly having a good chat to some old timers that were down there watching. She seems like a really down-to-earth person to have on the board. Also gave one of them her email address so they could properly give her some feedback on some topic which i didn't hear properly. Made sure she got his name too, so she'd know to look out for it. Good to see.
