If thats true, then he does increase his chance ever so slightly. But I haven't read much about that, and honestly dont know why they would bother.

Plenty of other guys that were drafted as midfielders that have been played out of their preferred position. Why move someone who is playing in the position he was drafted for.

Buggered if I know, you'd have to ask the coach

Fantasy Freako on Twitter today.
"Shane Savage was the number 1 ranked defender in the AFL from rounds 14-19 last year, avg. 25 disposals and 105 points."

Another one to consider around the 350-400k mark.

Can someone give me a good reason not to pick Hurn?

He's a proven at the very least good pick, if not great. With Waters out WC will turn to him to get it out of defense. He's not overly injury prone either. He's also a bit cheaper than the other premos.

For his style of play and the extra responsibility of captaincy, I like him. Good value for money IMHO

Interesting, that does make his claim stronger.

That being said though, I stand by my choice not to take him, as I cant see him stepping up enough to warrant his current price tag.

As always im happy to be proven wrong, but I think there are less risky options in the backline with guys that have an extra year or 2 experience.

Agreed, he isn't in my team atm either, but he is definitely on the "watch list" :)

It is the 47 point average and probably 60th ranked defender from round 20 to 21 that has me more concerned though...

I'm liking him. Seems to be the type that could lift with the captaincy and lead by example.

But still hoping someone will emerge in the NAB cup, because there aren't really any players im overly confident about.

He is the safe bet of the non-compete in my opinion. Maybe if you have a number of risks, he can be your safe balancing act? But he is priced at 86.9 and that is the average of his last 74 games. So you are getting basically exactly what you pay for except in the last 2 seasons he has played 30 out of 44 games, meaning 25% of his games need to be covered by a rookie scoring around 50 - 60 in the backline. So if you use a rookie scoring 55 for 25% of his games then his average of 86.9 becomes 78.9 and he becomes a little less appealing? I can agree many backs miss a few games, but he seems to miss more than the other "nearly premiums" and he offers little value in my opinion. I am giving him a no at the moment, I don't know where he would get any extra points from?

After he was copping the vest and playing an entirely different role, I think Savage is a very interesting pick. If Richo plays him in that rebound role hell easy average 85+ let's be honest the ball will be our defence a bit haha

Maybe I'm too old these days, only thing I can think of is Vaseline that it might be? Sad that I tried googling to find out why it might be funnny before typing this? Ah well... if only that s was a g then I would understand :)

Was used as a run with player on Macrae? I think in the second last game and had three frees against which doesnt help. The last game was the mauling at the hands of Sydney where very few players scored well. Dont know if that will change your mind but it helps to know the reasoning behind it.

I actually thought he copped a fwd tag in the WBull game(?)

Then didn't play after Syd game for rest of year, may have been injured(?).

SK_MD_#7 will know.

On KK, I dont like second year players. Not saying that he doesn't have the ability to break out, he looked solid last year. Simply that the odds are against him.

.

I actually did some 'research' a few years back (4 or 5 maybe ) about 2nd year players.

Turned out that there was a difference between how 'ready to go' rookies and late season starting guys performed the next year.

Every single player who debuted in rd. 1 of their rookie year increased their average in year 2.

Now, as I said, that was a while back, and things may have changed (although I might check again if I'm bored on a day off soon...)
...and, I know that KK debuted in rd 2... ;)

Anyway, it was interesting.

Just to elaberate a bit further on my comment just after midnight regarding Savage. I was inferring that fantasy freako's tweet was being very selective in its time frame picking out the one hot patch Savage had Narrowing it down to five weeks. I decided to show how irrelevant this can be by being even more specific and look at his two more even recent weeks of form.

The way I look at it is it is very hard to justify 5 weeks being an indicator of what a player can do over 22 weeks when in that players 5 years and 67 games he has never really been a consistent high scorer. It is just as likely the reasons for his poorer scores to occur at times again this year.

As a general principle I agree with what you are saying. Small sample sizes should be viewed with caution. With regards to Savage, the interesting thing to consider with those fabled '5 weeks in 2014', and the reason it is worth discussion, is that those 5 weeks coincide with a change in role. In his previous 5 years and 67 games, he had never (to my knowledge) been used as a halfback before. So the sample we have of him filling this role, while small, suggests decent scoring is a possibility should he be used in a similar role going forward. With the limited amount of decent defensive options this season, possibility might be about the best we can hope for.

Yep, cool understand.

I suppose what we have to work out is will he be in that new role for the whole of 2015 or just in patches.

How does jarryn Geary coming back from injury effect Shane Savage? Do they play similar positions, Geary is $40k cheaper to

Great post

Plz post more often on all things SC Stkilda!

Savage? He was tagged in his last two games before getting injured.
Fanfooty has him tagging in the WBD game and I could have sworn they changed him up for it as well. Him getting a tag makes more sense though.

Interesting Brad Scott talking on SEN this morning

Was very very non-commital about Atley playing in the midfield
Was very committed that Higgins best footy was as a mid/wing/hff

strangley does this make higgins a SC option? its Friday lunchtime, I've had no drinks and he is an option:confused:
