I am a bit worried about this rule change , consider a lot of people here mention before how afl screw freo ,no way they going to give Sandi the advantage freo needed.

Just announced Joel Selwood and Luke Shuey have retired

Reminds me of an article I read about Daniel Venables

"I think if I'm half the player that Luke is then I'll be pretty happy with that. He's a gun. If I can learn a few things off him and take in everything he says then that would be amazing."

What is half of mediocre these days anyway? Poor kid is doomed

How long have you been watching Sandilands? The umpires will see Sandi being held back each and every time and will pay at most two free kicks to the big man. This will benefit someone, but not our ruckman.
If anything, it will favour the mosquito brigade over larger midfielders (because smaller midfielders never take the third man up).
That's what I am saying, he has always been held but maybe the umpires will actually see him being held off it with no third man up to tap the ball, got to take notice when the ball is thrown up and comes straight back down without being tapped.

Last time we played the cats we won the clearances with Jon Griffin as our only ruck. Barlow went down injured and no Nat Fyfe.

Add Sandi
Subtract 3rd man up
Add Fyfe
= Clearance Domination.

Just need to use the ball more effectively.
Bennell and B Hill should help with that.

I want more info about the anti ducking rule. If that stops the cheating that has been occurring;
I'll be surprised, and I'll be very happy.

Same. There's a clause in the rule that the ball winner's head contact will still be considered the number 1 priority though so umpires will be able to use that to award the free if they wish. But I take heart in the fact that Shuey only got something like 10 Brownlow votes which was rediculous so umpires clearly don't like having to award the free to cheaters.

Tom Lamb.

Our whole midfield just got a huge boost. Contested ball winners are even more important now and we have some of the biggest and best running around. I wonder how many times next season we'll be hearing "Sandi taps it to <insert Fyfe, Mundy, Blakely, Neale> without breaking stride, who handballs it out to Suban/DPearce who kicks a goal from 55m out" ;)

Opposition players have always focused on reading Sandi's taps. All it means is that now it's the permanent strategy rather than just something they did at centre bounces.

I think we've only really had good midfielders for the past 5 years. Before then, I think it was more our midfielders not being able to capitalize and Sandi's dominance, which made it look like the opposition read Sandi's taps. I can't remember the last time we had such a big midfield (all being 185 cm+ 85 kg+ with the exception of Neale) to be able to bullock and block the opposition.

Not sure if this has been posted but the Perthnow article elaborates on the head-high rule interpretation for next year:

http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/af...s/news-story/893e03a1a8415079acc291047d0c8160

It says that no free will be awarded for dropping the knees or making a legal tackle look illegal (so the Shuey raising arm wraparound is no more...).

So many players do this but now that it has been outlawed it will look ten times as embarrassing when a player tries it but the umpire calls play on. They should have addressed this year's ago. It looks horrendous and is flat-out cheating.

I'm assuming the raft of young players coming in to the system who are ready-made masters of this has forced the issue, but it should not have come to that. McLean from WB and Mathieson from Brizzy are two that come to mind. Subes is one from our team who does it so he'll have to adapt as well.

These latest rule changes I see as being very positive for us next year and hopefully beyond. We have tall mids who don't duck to win frees, who now have an unimpeded Sandi to ruck to. Of course by unimpeded I mean no third man up - he'll still be getting scragged as **** every 2 mins...
