I agree with that, definitely need more midfield depth and class.

Having a more self reliant defence however potentially means our mids aren’t burning out having to run back so hard to support. Puts them in better positions for the transition.

Mills and Jones into the mid rotation, possibly Dawson and Clarke as a gut runner. Florent potentially going to another level. Hewett should be ready to take more responsibility and Heeney has another level to go to.

We have a lot of those tools on our list (but perhaps not fully there yet) however we could definitely do with a mid with some acceleration out of congestion and a bit of clsss on the outside. I am hoping Florent can assist there amongst others.
That’s why thought Scully would be a good get

So that's probably it for this trade period, in summary

Created much needed cap space by moving on Hanners & Rohan, two players most on here didn't have in their best 22 anyway and not bringing in any significant players to chew up cap space. With certain retirements next year added and the possibility to now front end an existing contract or two we should be in a very good position cap wise next year. Also did a Norf and increased the cost of a couple of Pies players :)

Got an extra second for 2019, likely to be low 20s

Strengthened our draft hand this year, 26 & 33 will pay for Blakey from pick 7 and I doubt he'll get a bid before then. Got a nice batch of three consecutive picks 38-40.

Added Clark who may prove to be a good pick up in basically a straight swap for Rohan.

So not as sexy as a number of other clubs but a period of realignment of our list. Better us than the scorched earth going on at GWS!

Yep, we have cleared the post COLA era in the last 3 years and the list is now in a very healthy state for growth, with the talent we have and that is coming via the Academy.

Next few years will be time to add (when required) via trading.

Scully is better than Shiel. What is scaring me about him, is if GWS take a low pick for him is his body cooked?

Scully I would only want on a 2 year contract max. Maybe a 3rd year if he hits KPIs.

Barrass and May play nothing like each other. Barrass is an intercepting 3rd defender. May is a big lockdown full back.

The original post which i disagreed with was that the club should be chasing May and poster seemed incredulous that we werent. 'My point' is that we have much greater needs than key defenders.

Rampe is one of the best key defenders in the league. Even Rance would look shaky at times if Richmond conceded the kind of I50 differential that we so often do.
Your point is incorrect then, Harley himself addressed that. To even suggest that two players don’t play like each other is absolutely absurd as no two players play allied, everyone is different, they all have their own styles but the thing they do have in common is the role they play. Defender, midfielder or Forward!

Look at the source.

The comments on there from so called fans are a disgrace.

They have absolutely no idea what the club has been doing over the last 3 years to regenerate and transition the list post the COLA.

The club has completely transformed the age profile and pay structure, ready to be in a position to take advantage of the right trades going forward.

There has been a number of well respected writers that look deeper and understand where the list is at and what the club wants to achieve, but most are just sheep and just follow the dribble spoken by a bloke who has no paid employment with the AFL any longer.

Glass half full for me is Langdon not coming allows a spot for O'Riordan to come straight in. I'm really keen to see him play as much senior football as possible in 2019.

But if we end up with only Clarke after this, it will have been a huge opportunity lost to restock our side with ready made players.

As it currently stands with our current squad/signings/re-signings and no injuries, our starting back 6 next year is:

McVeigh Rampe Lloyd
Smith Melican Aliir

Bench defender: O'Riordan

Depth: Grundy, Stoddart, Ling

I haven't included Mills and Jones as I think they will play midfield next year regardless. However, they will probably get a rotation through as the running defender for some part of the game.

Therefore, I think we should sign Duyrea, Newman, Maibaum, and Marsh as depth defenders. Sign them all cheap with no guarantees of firsts football but all of whom can step up as need be. I also wouldn't be against giving McCartin some minutes in the NEAFL at CHB.

We've missed Langdon, Vandenberg and Moore this year.
From their point of view it makes sense to stay at Melb and Collingwood show both could be contenders next year.

Sydney would look decidedly under the premiership ranking of these two clubs for a lot of players

Scully and wingard don’t make them better?

Massive question marks over Scully’s fitness and I would take Burton over Wingard every day if the week.

Good luck to them, they are taking a massive put on those two, it could be great or one massive fail.

The jury is still out on O’mera as well, he is only one knee injury away from having his career cut short.

I didn't realise there was an actual correct and incorrect answer.

I think Aliir, Rampe, Melican and to a lesser extent Grundy are a perfectly fine combination of key defenders. Miles away from being our most important list issue to address. For people on here to be implying that it is absurd that we aren't trying to trade for a key defender is what i think is 'incorrect'.

WTF would it have to do with player morale or culture? Langdon came for a medical, not to hang out with the guys and talk ****. He chose to stay at his club, which by all reports, was his preference all along.

Reading any more into than that is just silly speculation.

Turning down 1.2mill is not a big enough alarm bell for you bud? smh...

Every play we've gone for has said no. Moore, Vandemberg and now Langdon. Surprised if we didn't explore Shiel/Gaff as well... Obviously had no luck. Cleary players aren't interested in us which goes beyond everything we are, we're a club known for landing big fish and being a destination for players.

Secondly, Rohan the other day literally said the Swans "Shitted on him.' Multiple reports and journos just a month ago all said Parker wanted out and a possible trade to Essendon who Ricky Nixon said even said - parker had a meeting with the Bombers. Ricky Nixon also said Harley had ruffled a few feathers.

Yes I know Nixon is an idiot, but he's obviously heavily connected with CEOs and player agents... His 3 best mates are all CEO's of clubs. I know he says a lot of dribble, but he's probably just as accurate as McClure and Barrett.

The bigger concern I have, we scored a collective 9goals in the last 2 finals and we are looking to recruit HB Flankers..I get it releases Either Mills or Jones into the middle....but this is hardly addressing our issues

If the 'issue' is loss of control in midfield creating a disproportionately high inside 50 count our defenders can no longer repel then addressing the midfield does address the issue. In buddy we have perhaps have the greatest forward ever. The other players we have there are quality too. Sure beyond Reid and lesser extent Mccartin there is a dearth of marking targets and that's a weak point needs attention but I don't think that's the problem in not scoring. If we get and control enough of the ball then we will score.

I agree

No evidence

I would love findlayson.... anyone hear anything on this??

Also re: scully - would be up there with the most lop-sided trades ever if true. He already took a huge pay-cut to like $450k two seasons ago.... literally the best value for money experienced GWS player....mind boggling

If Rohan thinks he was 'shitted on' because we wanted to move him on after his 10 good games in 9 years, I am glad we did move him on.

Are we just a charity who cops repeated poor performance because he is a nice bloke?

He's talking crap. It's only a two year deal at Collingwood. As if we would be paying an extra $600k p.a. It was obviously an extra $1.2m over the term of the contract which was rumoured to be six years.

Well we are a charity that gives out Players, premierships & Draft picks, so why not?? Lol

The same Melican who can’t get on the park and the same Grundy that most likely won’t play 22 games next year? That’s two out and then we only have Aliir and Rampe...yeah, that’ll get us a long way. It needs to be addressed and if it didn’t, the club wouldn’t address it!
