2018 JLT Series - Game 2: St Kilda v Melbourne

Thursday night game.

Hoping for:

Billings to play.
White to play.
Coff and Clark to build on their form.
Paddy to take a few marks and kick a few goals.
Long to make a few tackles and kick a few goals.
Better ball movement and take our chances in front of goal.
Not fussed if Billings had another week off. Not ideal, but don't rush him back if he's not 100%. I'd like the coaching panel to make a call on the forward pocket. Put a line through Wright in the JLT series, and pick one of Lonie/Long. I think Lonie has more runs on the board at this stage, personally. Give him the vote of confidence and let him have four full quarters to prepare for working with his talls.

I’ll be worried if Billings doesn’t play cos that would mean he unlikely plays round 1 with little to no match prep leading in. Ideally he plays a half against Melb & is good to go for round 1.

An article I read a day or two ago said that he is expected to be right and that he actually wanted to play against Carlton, so hopefully that is a good sign that he is in fact recovered and good-to-go.

He certainly wasn’t convincing when interviewed during jlt1...

Does anyone know if we are doing a competitive match sim prior to round 1 or are the players having the week off (aside from training)?

Looking forward to seeing how Membrey Bruce and Paddy all work in the same forward line.

Excited to see how Billings goes after another good pre-season.

Don't care for the result, just want to see some improvement in general play and obviously no injuries.

Hopefully we don’t play the full 26 players in this game. I’d like this to be a full prep for round 1. Unless there’s 2 guys fighting for the one spot we could possibly play 23. I’d go with someone Like this.

B: geary Austin Webster
Hb: Roberton Carlisle savage
C: Sinclair armitage newnes
Hf: Billings Bruce Clark
F: Gresham McCartin membrey
Foll: longer Ross Steven
Int: coffield dunstan Steele acres lonie/long

Only thing is this team lacks a pressure forward but we simply cannot play blokes like wright or Weller over Clark if he is outperforming them.

Coffield, savage, newnes and Webster can rotate between half back and wing.

Dunstan, armitage, Steele, Ross rotate through the midfield.

Acres, Billings, Gresham, Clark, Sinclair roatate off a wing and forward

Would like to see Billings Bruce Paddy and Membrey all working together in the forward line but no biggie if they go another way.
Would also like to see a few changes to the defence tried out, give Logan Austin, Brandon White and Hugh Goddard some responsibility and see how they cope.

I reckon they will give Weller, Longer and Steele another run as they all looked way underdone. I am not in favour of playing Longer, he is pretty much a dead weight except in the ruck contest and when he fails in the ruck contest (like i expect he will against Gawn and like he did against Kreuzer) it means we are a man down on the opposition. Everyone else in the team has to work harder to make up for the deficit.

Gilbert's game was embarrassing. Do we play him into form or do we give his spot to an up and comer like Marshall or one of the draftees?

I’m pretty sure we need a pressure forward role though. If not our bomb it long game plan will have yet another flaw.

Long is a good physical presence though, he’d be best suited to that role from your line up.

Longer historically has done well against Gawn. Wouldn’t say he’s had the better of him but defs didn’t embarrass himself like last week v Kreuzer. At the end of the day he is our starting ruckman so should play as many minutes as possible for conditioning. Have faith in Billy.

Gilbert should not play. He was so far from the mark. We only hinder ourselves by playing a defender without a damaging kick. I think Marshall should be given the chance. He is versatile and although not that quick showed he can cover an opponent quite well in AFLX using footy smarts. Adds another capability too as he is good up forward.

If less teams are having three tall marking targets up forward this year it will significantly reduce the need for us to have Gilbo there, as the likes of Jimmy and Robbo can play on the medium-tall types and that could free us up to have an extra "playmaker" back there, like a Coffield/White/Newnes.

Will mean that we're likely to need Bruce to do the rucking tho.

Bruce is not the answer to our fwd/ruck issue.
As a ruck he makes a good whipping boy

Acres can’t be any worse than Grigg in the ruck. Gives us some extra grunt out of the middle as well

Would love to see us give Acres a crack at it assuming he was up for it mentally. Effectively gives us an extra runner if someone like White, coffeild or Clarke plays in place of Gilbert and Acres soaks up his 5-8 mins per 1/4 in the ruck

The other bloke I though might have a crack is Webster - he’s small but has a heap of mongrel in him and would relish the challenge I imagine. Either way would love to see them try something different than Gilbo/Bruce
