Brasher’s Weekly Musings…..Get The Band Back Together Edition

Green Bay at Chicago. I don’t like Week One Divisional match ups. The best thing about the scheduling of this game to open the season is we won’t have to wait too long to see who Aaron Rodgers blames for losing now that McCarthy will be on his 7th Budweiser by the time the 4th quarter rolls around (as opposed to when he was coaching where he would have been on his 12th by the same time). Come to think of it I’m not sure what Aaron has to complain about, you’ve been a league MVP, a Super Bowl winner, future HOFer and you do mildly amusing TV spots with Clay Mathews. You think any of this would have been possible playing for Mike Nolan in San Francisco?

Atlanta at Minnesota. Like at least half of the teams in the NFL the Vikings Achilles Heal last year was their offensive line. They have addressed it in the off season spending freely in free agency and in the draft. So what excuse will they have when they finish third in the division for Kirk Cousins not winning any clutch games?

Baltimore at Miami Are the Phins tanking? If this was a Doctor Phil episode, Don Shula would be calling in Dan Marino to perform an intervention on the Williams sisters (what does a Front Office partner do anyway?). Two of the top 5 salary cap pie eaters in 2019 will be Ndamukong Suh and Ryan Tannehill ($30M combined) and they don’t even play for the team any more. Going to be a long season down in South Florida.

Buffalo at New York Jets Get ready meme maker fans out there! Tell me you aren’t excited about new Jets; Head Coach, Adam Gase’s post game press conference if his team loses the home opener to the Bills? I’m giving away a signed copy of Marty Feldman’s autobiography “My World Through the Eyes of a Gypsy Fortune Telling Ball" to the best BigFooty effort.

Kansas City at Jacksonville I’m sure the question on everyone’s lips will soon be answered. Is Nick Foles better than Blake Bortles? But the Jags defence is no joke so this should be some sort of challenge on the road for the high-octane Chiefs offense. I’m tipping Kansas but with zero confidence.

Los Angeles Rams at Carolina. The most important roster decision for the Panthers this off season may be who backs up Newton. Panther season will go as their starting QB does. Will we see the former league MVP return to his look at me winning ways or the guy that looked like he had his throwing arm glued to his shoulder with play dough? Either way McCaffery is going to catch 150 passes this year and will win more fantasy league titles than NFL games.

Tennessee at Cleveland Not since Cleveland managed to defy the laws of chemistry and set the Cuyahoga River on fire has there been so much heat in the Dawg Pound. Since drafting about 109 QBs in the first round since Bernie Kosar’s retirement they might have a legit starter under centre so there is reason for optimism. Somehow you just know they will still finish behind the Steelers and Ravens, cause, you know, they are from Cleveland.

Washington at Philadelphia The Eagles will have to look for a complete game start from their franchise QB now they have lost closer Nick Foles to the Jags. On the other sideline it doesn’t matter much at all who starts at QB if Trent Williams doesn’t bother to show up for the season opener, besides how hard can it be to just hand it off to Adrian Peterson on every snap?

Cincinnati at Seattle No Marvin Lewis on the side line for the Bengals for the first time in 16 years. I guess the statute of limitations finally ran out and those compromising Mike Brown photos from that trip to Pattaya back in the day. Seattle also have some guy Clowney who benefited from the fact Houston realised that it is better to keep your own QB upright than to hit the opposing one 6 or 7 times a season.

Indianapolis at Los Angeles Chargers Melvin Gordon’s vision goes a lot further than being able to spot a gap in the defensive front. Gordon clearly has a vision of what a premier/elite running back’s franchise worth is in the new NFL’s pass happy league. Especially if your picked in the first round and have to play your first 5 years under the terms and $$$ of your rookie contract. By the time you get to sign your “real” NFL veteran contract your career might already be on the decline. So I can see why Bell, Gordon and some guy in Arlington are pursuing this course of action. If I was a player agent representing a bluechip college RB, I’d make sure he tanked enough to get picked in the 3rd round where contracts are limited to 3 years. In other news, I’m pretty sure something drastic happened to the Colts this off season but I just can’t put my finger on it right now.

Detroit at Arizona Depending on who you listen to Kyle Murray at 5’10” is the same height as former CFL HOFer Doug Flutie. Flutie gets rolled out by the defenders of Murray’s size as proof that height isn’t everything when it comes to being an NFL QB. But since Flutie retired, offensive linemen have gotten fatter, taller and wider. There simply isn’t as much available air to see and throw the ball like there used to be. And we haven’t even gotten to the defensive guys yet of which one of them from the NFC West, most probably Aaron Donald is going to set a single season record for passes batted down.

New York Giants at Dallas If this was the AFL, the Giants would have traded Eli Manning to the Gold Coast Suns by now. Instead they continue to let Manning serve out his retirement on the field. That would be Ok if they had drafted and were grooming a legitimate replacement to take over when he finally retired but I am pretty sure Archie Manning had it written into his son’s contract that the Giants weren’t permitted to do that. On the other side line Jason Witten has unretired himself which I am sure is a huge relief for anyone who has even a passing respect for the English language and that less is often more. If Witten was an author, the warranty card you get with your new iPhone would be 700 pages long.

San Francisco at Tampa Bay The 49ers go into the season with 3 QBs and 4 TEs on the roster. They also have 3 OTs who used to be TEs when they entered college. They have 4 first rounders on the defensive line, there best 3 WRs have one combined season between then and the line backers have collectively started 12 games for the 49ers. 5 starters are coming off some form of season ending injury in 2018 and they have to deal with the Brasher Jersey Curse (which is now confirmed as a thing). It’s a fully revamped roster, but, still, they only have one Richard Sherman to cover Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Pittsburgh at New England The Patriots have the oldest roster in the league and were recently voted by the media as having the worst roster talent of players under the age of 25. Here is my tip for spotting when Brady is likely in his last year. It will be come draft day when Bill Bilichick, notorious for hoarding draft picks, trades future 1st in the following three years to select players in the current year.

Houston at New Orleans Before realignment, the New Orleans Saints played in the NFC West and were not very good. Drew Brees was also still in junior high school. Drew Brees must certainly be nearing the end of his career and whilst the Saints won’t be going back to the NFC West they will go back to not being very good again.

Denver at Oakland GM Elway’s formula is pretty simple in Denver, stack your defence, recruit a Super Bowl ring wearing QB and go and win it all. There a couple of problems with this theory though. One, Elway will soon learn what the rest of the league knows, Joe Flacco ain’t Peyton Manning and two, this version of the Broncos' defence isn’t good enough to cover for Flacco the same way Ray Lewis’ defence did for him in Baltimore.

I think with Brissett the Colts in the first 4 or so weeks are must watch. They may not be as good as with Luck but they will be different which is always interesting. from reports even earlier in the offseason, brissett has been more accurate and corrected some of his technical flaws so the drop-off might not be too big. The other thing to consider is the O-line difference between now and the last time brissett started, it was a terrible line in 2017 now it is a top 10 line. That division is definitely cracked wide open now though especially considering all teams could be looking at 0-1 records after Week 1.

The other game in that slot ill be keen to look at is the Cards vs Lions. Not sure what to expect with Kyler and Kliff but should be good to watch!

Yes they're probably right considering a Frank Reich offense has always crumbled when they've had to rely on a backup You're 100% right the offense is still solid, the scheme is still the same as it was last year and the defense is young and talented and have added a good pass rusher and Nickelback corner to the fold. Can't wait to see how it unfolds. wish we didnt have to suffer through preseason week 4 now though!

There still is no "official" announcement from anyone at Foxtel, ESPN or the NFL that i have seen.
