Not even remotely comparable situations. Sydney have had access to 3 top 5 picks regardless of ladder position thanks to NGA's. and you can pay for them with late picks and you know you're getting them so can invest in them way before they are drafted. It's an absolute rort. Hawthorn, by contrast, have not had access to a top 5 pick in 15 years. Our last 3 top 5 picks were Roughead, Franklin and Ellis. Imagine being able to get players of the calibre regardless of where you finish on the ladder (and if you do finish low you get another top 5 talent anyway).Look at what clubs give up for top 5 picks in the draft - a lot!! and you just get handed them for a collection of late picks that nobody cares about.
The odd player saying they prefer to stay in Victoria is not remotely similar or even all that advantageous. There are 9 other clubs in Victoria for starters and most of the time these kids are drafted where clubs rate them regardless of what state they are from. Look at Perkins - did he slide down the prder to the great advantage of a Victorian club? Not at all - he went exactly where he would have gone - if anything, slightly higher. That has not disadvanatged Sydney (or advantaged Victorian teams) in any way.

Yeah Perkins was no chance at the top 7 the way the draft went. He went at the right pick.
