How much better having Nicks speak over 'the others' sounded genuine

Clearly Lynch is well respected and liked by the players, so that's probably why he is in thereHappy Smith is in the leadership group. He was one of the few that stood up last year. Doedee was a certainty and future captain material. MCrouch has been part of it for a while so no surprises. Not really sold on Lynch though in the group. Would have gone with talia myself. I just hope Sloane gets a harder edge to him as captain.
Overthinking itYeah I can't escape the feeling that Nicks is a caretaker. And not the planned kind. More the **** what do we do now kind. But at least we have a coach unlike senior assistant and culture officer who apparently aren't that important after all. There just seems to be a degree of paralysis and tell the fans everything is magical attitude.
Buy us another year and who knows what could happen.
Player vote under PykeJenkins was in it last year from memory. It’s a player vote anyway. Coaches select the captain.
Player vote under Pyke
This year it looks to be that Nicks selected the full leadership group.
It's not about whether he plays or not, it's about him being able to concentrate on himself. You reckon he's suddenly going to stop trying to play under duress? That's part of what made him a leader in the first place.
That won't change at all. It's more a symbolic gesture, transitioning official authority to less expectant types.
I don't really understand those people that think there is a right and wrong way to enjoy AFL.Some enthusiasts also just enjoy looking forward to a new season and don’t hold onto every inch of the past.
Nicks said that there was a players vote in the video - but I agree it sounded a bit more like they used that to help them make a decision, not that it was the be all and end all.Player vote under Pyke

I think if you take up supporting a team, you should at least understand the club's history, it's playing list etc. The kind of casual supporters I was talking about don't care enough to do that and forget everything that isn't immediately in front of them. Is it the "wrong" way to enjoy AFL? Not really but it is lazy.I don't really understand those people that think there is a right and wrong way to enjoy AFL.
Players voted on who they wanted. Nicks said based on the votes Talia and Tex would have been in the group. But after he had conversations with them he had decided that it was in the clubs best interest to not have them included and bring in Doedee and Smith. Tex and Talia were in agreement.players vote for the leadership group. The coaches select the captain and it’s then ratified at board level. Players do not select the captain.

Not according to Nicks. Players voted the guys in, from there Nicks selected the captain....
You said the leadership group - the VCs - was a player vote
I am saying that was only the case under Pyke
It is no longer the case under Nicks, Nicks selected the leadership group
YesNicks said that there was a players vote in the video - but I agree it sounded a bit more like they used that to help them make a decision, not that it was the be all and end all.
Reposting this quote from Nicks in case you missed it in the AFC article and then again when I posted it on the last page:Not according to Nicks. Players voted the guys in, from there Nicks selected the captain.
Thats largely irrelevant to who else is in the groupReposting this quote from Nicks in case you missed it in the AFC article and then again when I posted it on the last page:
“In regards to Taylor and Daniel, the feedback from their peers suggested they both could have been included in the leadership group but we have decided it is time to transition and provide leadership opportunities to others.
“They were supportive of the decision and are highly respected members of the playing group, and will continue to provide guidance and advice across the football program.”

I'm happy with the leadership group. It shows the club is moving in a new direction which it must. Happy with everything I've heard out of nicks so far. Just want to see it at selection.Reposting this quote from Nicks in case you missed it in the AFC article and then again when I posted it on the last page:

I have to admit that every time I see a bad news story on Cousins there is a part of me that says "serve you right you dirty little drug cheat". '06 was ours, we would've beaten Sydney, but to come out a half time and make VB look like a chasing ruckman and with everything we know now he was on something...argh...getting pissed off now...I see it as casual fans with their goldfish memory. Every new footy season comes along and they pretend like the last one never existed.
Real enthusiasts on the other hand hang on to all the good/bad footy moments until they're dead or senile. I will never forget the 97 GF but you know I'll still be planning Tippett's demise when I'm very old and crapping my pants in assisted living.
Haha, you can’t be seriousThats largely irrelevant to who else is in the group
I think the club lost a massive amount of trust last year with fans. All that BS in pre season videos about how happy everyone was, when there was obviously simmering tensions at multiple levels.Overthinking it
Reality: Nicks picked the leadership group as most coaches do
AFC spin: Everyone is really getting along so well these days and everyone agrees with every decision, it really happens so organically with such symbiotic synchronicity it’s hard to tell who even had the idea in the first place

They showed themselves to be nothing other than spin merchants and doubled down on that spin right down to when the metaphorical tanks were at the gates. It was only when their hands were forced that something was done.
I wouldn’t believe a single thing coming out of AFC media anymore, especially not how “happy” we all are now.
Personally I’ll assess for myself at the bye. And that’s not necessarily a purely results based assessment either. Regardless of the win/loss count it won’t be hard to see if we’re heading in the right direction.
ExactlyEven just our round 1 team selection will tell us a lot about whether we're on the right track
Think your reading too much into that article which did not correctly report what Nicks said.Haha, you can’t be serious
It shows it was clearly Nicks’s decision. He listened to input, and then made his own call. Some of his call lined up with the player input, some of it didn’t.
Beautifully written script starring Matthew NicksThink your reading too much into that article which did not correctly report what Nicks said.
Go to the Video the article was base on from the 1.20sec mark, it explains it better,
He clearly states at the 1.48sec that they've (Tex and Tals ) made a selfless decision, for the betterment of the group, understanding what is going to make us better as a team.
How do we now that, the Players I have talked to do not feel Nick runs to a script.Beautifully written script starring Matthew Nicks
