Training 2020 Preseason

As Jason said, Coleman really looks the goods

Did Ah Chee cold in the one on one's every time and apart from that just looks like a really silky mover .....more than a touch of the Shaun Burgoyne's about him.

Rich continued his practice of running laps apart from the main group but I'm not at all concerned about him. Looks super fit and running with complete freedom. Did a few kick to kicks later on with one of the trainers. Kicking action looked as fluent as usual to me.

I have to give Matt Eagles a plug too. He is a serious player and looked really good yesterday. I think he was doing one on one's with Ballenden and got the better of that contest by quite a margin. He seems to have really good spacial awareness when the ball is in the air. Great insurance as backup if the worst happens and some key defenders or a ruck goes down during the season.

Tom Joyce spent a lot of time with Birchall and Harris with the three of them alternating between the vertical barbell, weight bags and ropes. I'm pretty sure Joyce joined the main group later in the session.

At this point of pre-season I don't believe anyone should be jumping at shadows just because a player or players are doing their work away from the main group. We had a terrific run with (non) injuries last season , particularly the absence of any significant soft tissue stuff. I think it makes perfect sense that individual programmes have probably been set up, especially for the older guys with the focus on injury prevention, rather than cure.

I think I heard they are training right up to the 20th being Friday week.

In any case yesterday was my last session this year as we are off for family hols for a couple of weeks.

I have no doubt that the eagle eye of Jason and Briz will keep you well informed until Christmas.
Thanks Luthor, Jason and others for the training reports. They are great and are helping with my slow recovery from the GWS game.

Again just my opinion.

Archie doesn’t offer anything around the ground other than as a tap ruckman. And we have Big O ahead of Archie there.

Archie is not a good contested mark.

If we want a ruck who can compete at ground level, and offer a bail out option down the line, then Eagles is ahead of Archie there in my opinion.

There’s a reason why we were happy for Archie to explore his options as a delisted free agent and keen to keep Eagles on the list.

It wasn't just that Eagles played outstandingly well at HB in the NEAFL finals, it was also that when put into the ruck he was terrific when compared to Archie. He made an immediate, discernible difference

The guy I would like to see us getting more ruck time into in the reserves is Ballenden. I can't see him making it as a pure forward but if he can hold his own in the ruck his around the ground kicking would be a huge asset to the team.

If he can get super fit and get plenty of marks up the ground he can get dangerous with his kicking and work over his opponent.

I’m not sure fitness is really his issue. The guy needs a heavy dose of aggression inserted in to his DNA.

Needs some Matt Eagles and Mitch Robinson special coaching.

Aggression coaching?

I’ve been saying for a while now aggression is an issue. Probably worse than Schache but I think around the ground he can still have an influence playing almost as a high half forward and inning his opponent off his feet. Would also utilise his foot skills to set up the play.

He was contracted to us for another 2 years, we had to re-rookie him if he didn't go anywhere else or we would have to pay out his contract. Just guessing but I'd say what ever he might have been offered elsewhere was less than he would get on his Lions contract. Who knows what the next 2 years will bring, a few injuries and he has to play consecutive games and it all turns for him and the club. I still see us recruiting a new ruckman to replace Martin.
I agree, if we cant squeeze another year out of Martin we will look to recruit. With Melbourne drafting luke jackson, being seen as heir apparent to gawn, i think we should have a crack a brayden preuss. He would have to be craving regular afl games. He could certainly play stefs role in our 2 ruck set up. Would have to be an attractive proposition for him too, coming into a good team in their window. If we cant get someone like that, we may need to squeeze another year out of stef. Who else would be worth chasing? Who would be available?

I also agree that a solid stretch of games for Archie could be the making of him. At worst he is a low cost fill in for the next 2yrs.

preuss was silly togo to Melbourne. They already had Gawn who he was never going to displace, sohe wouldn't be the number 1 ruckman. Was a strange decision. Wonder if Soldo is gettable?

It seems we always get tall players that dont have that aggression or intimidation you get from the players they tend to be compared to immediately (Brown being the classic obviously, even though he wasnt exactly tall)

We've had guys like Close, Lisle, Retzlaff and others who just didnt quite have that aggression needed up forward to stamp their footprint. Hipwood is...better but still not that threatening presence.

Matty Eagles has it. Jack Payne looks to have it. Sam Skinner has it.

Harris is more like the, “this my business get out of my way”, silent type.

Ballenden just looks like he’s afraid to hurt people, because he’s bigger than most.

Yeah, Eagles, Skinner and Payne have a hunger for the contest. Andrews does to an extent, but he prefers the more aerial and methodical approach to the contest.

From Fish:

Established gun: Look no further than the captain Dayne Zorko. A heap of Brisbane players are super-fit – and have been with a relatively uninterrupted three to four years – but despite being on the cusp of turning 31, Zorko is showing no sign of slowing down. He is among the best three endurance runners on the list, still has his explosive speed in football drills and looks set for another big season in 2020.

Gen next: Keep an eye out for Brandon Starcevich. About to enter his third season, the West Australian is running well and is noticeably stronger. As dedicated as any player on the list, the 20-year-old ditched an off-season overseas holiday to stay with family in the west and prepare for the upcoming season as well as he could.

New faces: After an injury-plagued 2019 with Gold Coast, Callum Ah Chee has hit the ground running at the Lions. Has fitted in nicely to the backline drills, looking sharp with his speed and skills, and is mid-pack in the aerobic running. - Michael Whiting
