Really looking forward to the 1st official practice match this coming Sunday v Port Adelaide, it will be a good indicator to our round 1 side, IMO we will select our best possible/available side, expecting all the locks who didn't play last night to play.
Doubt it, don't think we have ever selected the best possible in the 1st HO. Usually reserved for a few good players but mostly younger guys like E.Smith, Robertson etc. to see them against opposition. Round 2 and 3 is when the big uys usually come back

There is no round 3.

Only the 2 games.

Quick question.... Why is Mitch Robinson not in the leadership group??

He seems to me to be a clear on field leader, and helps the indigenous boys off the field.

He is also a regular media performer / spokesman for the team.

Just curious. Sad not to see him there.

You'd have to ask the players, since it's a player voted thing, if you think they've made the wrong decision.

It's not uncommon for some people to decline to put their names forward for such things because they don't want that level of responsibility. It may be that Robinson prefers his informal role to something more defined. I don't know whether that's the case here.

Also I have noticed that they have changed the player availability regulations for the bush fire relief game later this month, now a minimum of only 1 player per team and could be up to 5 players from 1 team taking part. This could affect who we select for the 2 Marsh series games, from an article on afl.com all the "superstar" players are keen to play.... expecting our participants to come from Neale, Zorko, Cameron, Andrews, McCluggage, Rich and Martin.

One player that has intrigued me heading into this season is McCarthy. Like others I expected him to be the type of player vulnerable to bring replaced. Given he's had another full season (bar the birth of his kid) he's pretty much as fit as he's ever been and will be hitting his peak. If he can find consistency on his patchy form last year, he'll be best 22 with ease.

He moves so well, sometimes he tries to take on a little too much and works his way into trouble as a result. But I honestly think he makes us better.
He is a lock for me.

He might just be one of those players the really good teams have which just make the senior team.

It'll be interesting to see how we split the time of the midfielders and small forwards playing up forward and in the midfield.

Plus he goes under the radar with Charlie up there so should create a few headaches when he's playing well

He was everywhere Saturday night.

Zorko Hipwood Rayner
Cameron McStay McCarthy

= Headache
Yeah, that’s how I see it. With most of the mids rotating through the forward line. Not sure we’ll see a specialist forward on the interchange bench.

A lot depends on if we play with two rucks in terms of bench make up.

You could say the same about Dan Rich, but dlanod summed up the reason why perfectly.

The thing with McCarthy is that his situation is unique. I honestly can't think of another player who, at 26yo had 8 years in the system, played 29 games over 7 years and 24 in his 8th. It really is impossible to predict what the rest of his career looks like based on that. There's no standard career trajectory that applies to him. He could improve on last year, give us roughly the same or he could decline (the last one would probably be due to injury if it were to occur).

If he improves on last year, then he's a lock for a game every week. If he declines, then I can't see him getting a game. Where it gets interesting is if he has a similar year to last year. He was certainly good last year. Playing 24 games in a top 4 side says that. Does that get him a guaranteed game every week this year? I'm not sure. A guy like Zorko playing more half forward puts increased pressure on the likes of Christensen, Rayner and McCarthy. You'd expect Bailey to be in that mix too. And guys like TBerry, Eli, Cedric etc would all see that area of the ground as their pathway into the seniors. The way it stands, someone is going to be unlucky for round 1. And I guess that it would be good if someone like Linc has to improve just to keep his spot in the side.

The other thing worth commenting on is that the two question marks over McCarthy when he joined the Lions was whether his body could handle a full season and whether he still had the athletic ability to play senior footy. Those questions, particularly the second one, have been well and truly answered.

Have you guys ever considered your club doing what Adelaide and our cross town rivals Port do in the pre-season with a an U23 match between your mob and the GCS?....usually a really good hit out especially for the new kids from the 2019 draft, a good taster for the supporters to see the emerging talent.

Given the David Noble connection, you’d have to imagine it’s at least been discussed internally.

It pretty much happened on Saturday night.

Is Adelaide 30 mins or 30 days behind? :(

Hi guys, wife & I attending the game with 3 other Brisbane couples. Can anyone give some advice for comfort & viewing? Being a small suburban oval, I imagine deckchairs the way to go, or perhaps a blanket? Anyone offer a few suggestions - esp for the girls. Thanks

Very little shade there, chairs are probably the best idea. Parking is very restricted.

I think McCarthy was in the same boat as a lot of young blokes just kicking off their career. Not having played a full season before, they dont have the tank and some fatigue sets in thru the season. Was noticable last year in some of his performances, the big O last year as well. Both playing their first full season, they will be better this year because of it. That hardened match fittness takes time to build up, he will get there, injury permitting.
