Training 2020 Preseason

CEY didn’t do enough against Port To cement a place in the midfield imo. Don’t think he’ll be playing rd 1 unless there’s injuries.

Also he's a bit slow for the early rounds on firm, fast decks. He will have an easier time of it when the grounds get heavier and players get slower. He's really just another victim of climate change.

Geez, CEY wasn't impressive but figured he'd be given the two pre-season games to gel a bit. No passengers on a premiership train.
Perhaps it speaks more about what Ely showed in the intraclub in comparison too. Looking forward to watch what the depth bring to this hit out and hope they get a few more minutes this time

That's a good way to look at it. That last mid spot probably gonna have some heavy competition all year. HB line the same issue.

What about Adams did very little against Port before he went off very late in the 2nd Q. Obviously no room for Payne in either of the trial games and whilst Adams is in best 22, Payne wont get a chance. Would have been great to see Payne V McKay (but McKay is out injured). Good to see a couple of the young guys get a go for what is a trial game. I'm a strong supporter of giving the young guys an opportunity in trial games to expose them to a level of senior footy.
You would have to say that Adams and Birch are now locks for the first round and subsequent early rounds. Answerth holds his spot based on last year and the locks of Gardner, Rich and Andrews, so starting six for the backs virtually settled. Might be a wing spot and a forward pocket up for grabs and one or two on the bench, but side fairly settled for the first few rounds.

Adams is an interesting one, I can't seem to find it but I remember fish talking about how Adams and Gardiner were two mid sized defenders who could both play tall but brought different attributes, making them valuable options if things need to get thrown about.

I want to throw the idea of Jack Payne being a tall forward? He is surplus in our backs because of Adams/Gardiner. What about as a hulking F50 marking target? IMO noone has a signature on that third tall spot, just yet.

We GOT TO play Starce. He’s the best fringe talent we have. And, that’s saying something.

Whilst he is a good kick, I think Payne's attributes are his closing speed and one v one. Performs this role really well and defence is his spot. Surely he is not too far behind Adams currently. I believe he has a lot of upside and just needs an opportunity, very surprised he did not get this in either trial game. Saw somewhere he is signed until 2021, maybe that is why they are taking it slow with him but I can't see him hanging around waiting for an injury to get an opportunity. The current 3 tall's are all fairly young. There is competition also for the 3rd tall forward there are a few young forwards, Skinner, Ballenden & Fullarton and big O can play tall forward/ruck role.
Yes I like Starc and also hope his gets a good run during the trial game against Carlton. Again there is competition for the BF positions. The next 12 to 24 months could be an interesting time because you would have to think that some of the young guys who are pushing for selection will explore opportunities elsewhere, that is the nature of the system. Players just outside of the best 22 constantly seek releases from contracts.

I believe Starce could easily play anywhere on the field aside from Ruck, obviously. If we are stacked on the HB line, surely he could rotate via the mids. Big body, skills, agile and power. Starce > CEY easily

If his fitness levels are where they need to be, I would love to see him on a wing.
Gunning for Mitch’s spot.

Here's the video of fages interview from today for those who haven't seen it. Interesting to hear him acknowledge that results aren't really the priority for us in the preseason games this year, we're more interested in taking the chance to experiment

Well if that is true, then shouldn't the youner guys play like Payne.

When trying new things for the year ahead, wouldn’t you want to try those new things with the team that is actually going to be playing?

Absolutely just for the experience, reports on this post have Payne training very well, but it appears game time into Birch and Adams to have them ready for Hawkes round 1 is the priority.
Hopefully Ely, Dev, Skinner, Starc, get some decent game time against Carlton. I know Ballenden was a touch disappointing against Port but would have liked him to get some game time against Carlton, just to build confidence among the young group. IF we get injuries this year some of these guys are likely to be called up.

Ballandean- looks like tarzan, plays like Jane. Shit, can you even say that anymore?

Of course, as long as you mean he plays like Harry Jane, who racked up a meagre 13 games in the 1910s for Carlton and St Kilda. And he only got that many because of the Great War.

Actually I am pretty relaxed about Ballenden’s development. I have been looking for some vision of Stef when he was 20 but can’t find any, but I think similar comments were made about his physicality early days. i am happy to give Ballenden at least a couple more years.
Sort of related.

How much wear and tear would a body go through playing NEAFL as opposed to AFL?

Seduced by Connor's ability to kick the footy. Just not sure he has that mongrel required. Happy to be proven wrong. It was the knock on him in his draft year and it led to him dropping significantly in the draft order.

Not a lot of 20 year old tall forward/rucks have a heap of mongrel. He’s got the next 2 years to find his way but has shown some glimpses so the hope is there
