We don’t know if he’s on the rookie list yet. Clubs could move two players straight to the rookie list. However we delisted three, and specifically mentioned redrafting them in the rookie draft.

We might be dangling a carrot, and seeing if another team bites.

I wonder if the Collingwood interest is driven by Knightmare, as he has a fixation of turning Ballenden in to a KPD.
Briz wasn't there a tweak to only this year in the last week where a club can move the 2 players directly to the Rookie list - so no de-listing and re-listing, no chance another club could get in on the process? I don't hold any fear if Ballandene was to go, I think his desire for hard body contact is not as good say as Fullerton who i think has more potential now. He is an elite kick around the ground but McStay will line the tall timbers up and crash through where Ballandeve would more likely be standing in the pack. I watch a reserves game where he played fullback against Sydney and 3 times in a row lost a one on one battle to be outworked simply because he couldn't get the one on one wrestle thing happening. In a tough Covid climate I think he is one we could let go we have given him plenty of chances. Maybe as a ruck forward back up for us but just haven't seem much improvement in his body work and a young prospect on the list might be a better option.

That’s correct.

I found it interesting that the clubs wording was to send all three of our delisted in contract players to the rookie draft.

If it is a "fishing" exercise then obviously Birchall is not going to be of interest to anyone else. Matho and Ballenden may attract some interest but unlikely.

Close to zero chance Matheison gets picked up elsewhere. He has a contract for next year in any case.

Yep, if someone wants one of them we save a little salary and drop back to a base salary of a draft/rookie when we fill their spots, if not we have to re-draft/rookie them as to not breach their contracts but both will gone at the end of their contracts, I think we have found their ceilings within our process and they would know that now as well.

That’s my take as well.

I believe you are correct, but I hope maybe Suns, North etc interested in Birchall for 2021, and relieve some salary cap, because I would think with his experience he did not come to Brisbane for $150K and therefore he would be on significantly more then Ballenden and Matho (guessing $170K TO $220K per season), are likely on. We will need salary cap to upgrade the likes of Starc, Bailey, Berry, Payne to name just a few.
I still have some hope for Ballendeen with a big offseason and a few kilos of muscle in the gym, so I hope he stays.

I still have a flicker of hope that Connor Ballenden could make it at AFL level, you would think with us letting Skinner, Eagles, Wooller and Martin go he will get opportunity at some stage in 2021. Matho not so much, a lot have gone past him and it's only going to get harder for him to make the side.

Hopefully one of our young defensive options goes past Birchall before the bye round in 2021.

Birchall and all of the players you mentioned are already contracted for next year so we don’t need to find any money in the cap for 2021.
Birchall will be off the list for 2022 when we will need to find the money for the young boys you mentioned.

Can someone explain the point of this one please?

Much like with the trade from 63 back to 66, we're getting rid of late picks we're not using this year to collect future 4ths. I wonder if there's going to be a bigger list cull next year and those 4ths then become useful. Or maybe we'll sell them to Collingwood who will have a highly rated F/S player to match.

It was initially thought the 4 late picks were held as points for Coleman and maybe another academy player, after live selection at 25. Maybe we are now preparing that a bid for Coleman will come before 25, therefore will either use 25 to match bid or trade it out for more points. In either case though we no longer need 4 late picks to match academy bids, so decided to flip 1 of them into next year.

So who would be the person at the Club driving this strategic stuff?
You would have to think it would be Dom at the moment.
I am sure there is a method to the madness.

Most exciting part of all this is the adding to the legacy of pick 70.
- Originally tied to GWS
- Traded to Adelaide in exchange for Sam Jacobs (2019)
- On-traded to Port Adelaide in exchange for Billy Frampton (2019)
- On-traded (with pick 22) to Brisbane for pick 23 and 2020 2nd rounder (Collingwood) (2019)
- Traded with Stef Martin to North Melbourne/Western Bulldogs for pick 63
- Traded to Collingwood as a part of the Stephenson deal
- Traded to Brisbane along with 2021 4th round pick for 66 and 68.

Now we know why we collected so many realitively worthless picks in this year's draft. It was so that we could trade them for even worse picks next year. Huzzah!!
Bear in mind there will be a lot less matching allowed next year, so a fourth-round pick will probably still be in the 60s. The draft may be a better one though.

The bold bit. If Collingwood do not trade out of their future first round pick, our accumulation of late round picks will be a goldmine. It's like a Collingwood Deathride.
