List Mgmt. 2021 Mid-Season Draft

More than likely we have fewer than 18 draftable players, but equally recognise that clubs will view the cohort differently, and so one is likely to be available at our second round pick.

Bang on! The number could be as low as 5-6, IMO. With the nature of this draft the guys we rate at 2 and 3 on our board are as likely to be available at both picks as we are to pass at our 2nd.

Doubt we will get both Callow and Johnson. Neither will likely be available in the second round with Essendon linked to Callow and Gold Coast linked to Johnson. Dare say other sides will be sniffing around as well.

Hoping we get Callow with our first pick then wouldn't mind Zavier Maher with our second pick if available. If not then either Thorne or Stengle for that small forward option.

I’m wanting Callow but if we pass on him to take a 193cm forward that has some x factor and kicks goals and jumps on heads I won’t be disappointed.

We just need players forward of the ball that are natural forwards.

remember Liam Jurrah? God he had some talent and sounds exactly like you described.

Burgoyne, Gunston, Gibson and lake for starters. Went ok didn’t they.
4 flags in his time in recruitment and list management is a bit on the brilliant side. Everyone here would froth at one flag. Hine can’t even deliver a KPF let alone a flag. Got a dud yank as a key forward. ( on 500k as well) How’s that Hine forward line tracking. Can’t kick a goal. While having ya spell get some knowledge.
None of those guys were drafted by Wright. They were trades, which is what he specialised in. His opposition talent ID and knack for getting trades done to fill needs is second to none, but let’s not pretend he was particularly good at the draft table.

Ash Johnson gives me Jeremy Howe vibes.
He does look decent. I’m quite happy to take him, and it looks likely. I’d just be disappointed to miss out on Callow.

To clarify the context was overruling Hine at a draft wasn’t it? You then proceeded to name 4 players that Hawthorn pro-scouted. Again what are Wright’s credentials to be coming in over the top of Hine? If anything Wright’s 11-14 draft results were as poor as Hine 15-18 with Hill and Sicily the only hits that would be clear best 22 at Collingwood right now.

I mean did you miss the part where I said there's logic in talking about positions we need? The fact is, the media don't actually know and just run stories for clicks. I haven't actually heard from any footy experts. I would imagine they all work for clubs and won't be talking til after draft. I mean who's watching footage, interviewing the players and seeing their medical tests?

The truth is, neither your nor I know if Callow is the best available pick at 3. And this is directly in response to people complaining that they never pick Bigfooty favourites.

We can easily trade in for a KPF if we want it, and there might be a junk time pick we could use on 1, just like every club chose not to on Callow last year.
i understand and agree with where you are coming. We have limited knowledge on what is going on with the recruitment team. We don't know what the club has planned over the next year or two. It could be they are in discussions with a KPP from another club already.

While I think Callow would be an interesting pick up (he seems to at least be a 'smart' footballer, which I'm not so sure we have many of them), I'd be happy with taking a punt on someone like Thorne (we really need to inject some pace into the team and someone who can possibly crumb up forward), or a Johnson who seems to have some x factor quality about him.

Callow seems unlikely to last until the second round.

Ash Johnson would be 50/50 if we pass on him, as GC are his other main suitor and they’re torn between Ash Johnson and taking a ruckman to replace Witts.

I’d be shocked if GC didn’t take a ruckman whether it’s Mirkov or Heath so a Callow then Johnson draft is a distinct possibility if we’re angling for both.

they may take Moyle if the Hawks are concerned someone taking Newcombe. The Bombers seem to enjoy spoiling the Hawks' party.

Did Stengle shelve one during the interview?
I think the Do Better report will help to shape our draft. I think we'll take an indigenous guy. But would only take Stengle if we take two indigenous guys, as there's no way that we can finally pick one indigenous kid and then sack him for discipline reasons shortly afterwards - which is what we'd have to do if Stengle stuffed uo again. So him being no longer in contention makes me think we're going Callow/Moyle or Begg instead of Johnson at pick 3 and then an indigenous player with our second pick.

Yep, hopefully GC are out to spoil Carlton's party and snag Mirkov! Wary of the Hine special at our second pick though, even if we had Johnson there as available to select

The optimist in me (which is about 20% when it comes to Collingwood matters) has me thinking if we pass on Callow it might be because we have our claws in Weideman? Unlikely I know, but I'd still like to think it's a possibility!

He had some talent - just wasn't an AFL athlete. Anyone know where he went after Brisbane. I bet he's smashing it in a country league somewhere.

Not really based on what I found - kicked 31 goals in the NEAFL in 2018 and 21 goals in the NTFL in 2020/21.

Weideman is a bit vanilla for my liking, certainly doesn't appear to be the difference maker at AFL level that people would be hoping for. If we got him for peanuts then I'd be fine with it but that's not likely to happen.

Passing on Callow who is leading the contested marks in the SANFL would give me the worst flashbacks to when we passed on Riccardi, the 2nd leading goal kicker in the VFL.

Agree but be Prepared for us to Take Johnson
