RFA offers have to be a minimum of 2 years under AFL rules.

But I wouldnt discount a massive initial 2-year deal as a possibility, as long as Merrett was agreeable to a choice of money over security.
I would love us to do this. Offer something ridiculous over 2 year such as $4m then sign him to an extension once it goes through. If Essendon match then they have to pay him $4m over 2 years then he is a free agent again.

Essendon supporters would be pissed which would make this even better. Other clubs would be happy with Essendon getting screwed too.

You could pay him $1.4mil over two years, plus $200 from our ASA cap (plenty of time to line that up) for a $1.6mil total. I doubt Essendon would match that IMO, as Essendon and the Melbourne clubs would use up all their ASA cap much more then we would ever do.

Essendon could match any offer we make, but whether they do comes down to trying to save face IMO. If they are realistic they'd know they aren't going to challenge whilst Merrett is in his prime, so they'd be better off using the money they'd throw at him to sign up their best youth (such as it is) long term and chase younger more realistic trade targets (who'd be around when they could challenge).

Of course many of their fans have bought into the cult of the Dodo, where hurting yourself (Essendon) is fine, as long as someone also doesn't get what they want. Coming up on where someone born the last time they won a final could legally drink, but hey! pissing off our players wanting out and continued non-success, in part by failing trade week over and over, sure is fun! :drunk:

You reckon other clubs would be happy with that?
You’d struggle to get a trade or FA bid done for a very long time.

We would only struggle to get a trade done with Essendon but thats nothing new.

Do you honestly believe that’s how it would be seen? Like I said, kidding yourself.

2 million dollars a year just to screw a club over 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You guys literally try and screw multiple clubs over every year in the trade period. Why do you think you are in any position to try and talk crap lol.

Who have Essendon tried to screw over?

Playing hard ball and trying to get the best deal for your club is not screwing over other clubs, you either take the deal or you don’t.

What crap am I talking? Tell me other response a post that suggesting Port Adelaide pays Zach Merrett 2 millions dollars a year deserves?

So is Port SERIOUSLY into Merrett?
Or is this just a diversionary tactic to talk all season about him, then nab someone else (who we purposely let slip under the radar) at year's end trade period 😉😗
I kinda get this feeling too. Seems odd that we’ve come out and said we’re after him. But I guess there’s been nothing official from the club.
If we are after Merrett I hope we’re smart enough to walk away if Essendon match. He’s a good player but he’s not a player I’d sell the farm for.

Clubs still have to trade with other shit despicable clubs and individuals.

Exhibit A: Essendon and the Dodo.

We wouldn't come out publicly like this if it wasn't a real possibility.

You dont want to be embarrassed like North have been in recent years with these big statements then nothing happening.

why is wines publicly talking about other players in April lol is this normal now maybe I ignorantly missed it
Happens every year.

"Hey (insert player here), would you like (insert player here) to join the club?" - Reporter

"Yeah sure, he's a quality player, would be a great addition to the squad" - (Insert player here)
