His 2021 season might change that though but a top 10 pick for an unproven ruckman is generous.

ladhams isn’t unproven. He played 10 games last year, and on the afl fantasy ladder board for rucks for 2020 he is 15th

He is the youngest in that top 15.

There is still some unknowns to his game, mostly around his ceiling as a lead ruck and just how good he could be. But there’s zero question that he’s a quality afl player.

I do agree that teams generally don’t look to spend high picks on trades for rucks. Though by their drafting they probably should.
There’s really next to no incentive to trade him out. Our ruck stocks are primed to keep us competitive for years.

My thoughts joining the dots -

I understand the plan up until 2019 was for CCJ to replace Riewoldt when he retired. Then covid hit which put a ? through form of fringe players at Richmond and of course kebabgate.

Ive heard Adelaide and Collingwood were keen for a trade (the latter particularly if Moore didnt stay) at the end of last year so its a bit of a fluid situation. Collingwood prepared to part with a pick in the early 20s.

If CCJ doesnt work for Richmond in 2021 i think he will probably be traded, most likely home to SA. But we need a young but viable KF. We have Geelongs first as well as our own and 2 second rounders.

Could be interesting.

If Coleman jones hasn’t established himself at Richmond by the end of the year his value would be pretty low.

Obviously Vic centric, as it’s MMM M(elb), but if the reported Essendon offer is on the mark, then we may need that really heavy front loaded deal, as reported by C4.

Depends on what Zac wants out of footy.

Jay Z joined the Sunday Rub team to discuss Essendon's latest injury concerns, as well as the current situation with star midfielder Zach Merrett.

Merrett - who becomes a free agent at the end of the season - was taken out of Essendon's leadership group in 2020 before re-entering as a Vice-Captain for this season.

"We know Carlton and Collingwood are screaming out for him." Clark explained.

"Essendon will give him a 6 year deal on 900[thousand], there's no doubt about that. They couldn't afford to lose him." said Clark.

The boys believe the Bombers aren't playing the style of footy which will convince Merrett to stay with the club on a long-term deal.

"They are at base level." said Nathan Brown.

I don't want anyone.

I want everyone to continue to want us.

/thread.

The one thing that really annoys me with Merrett is his stationary flailing arm tackling attempts. It might be passable as the star midfielder in bottom 4 side but he’ll need to tighten up defensively playing for a finals side. Maybe it’s a symptom of his level of commitment to Essendon at present.

Im not sure if I want Merrett for 6 years at $900k. Seems like he wont live up to the value of that contract.
There is no possible way we'd offer him that. No way on earth, if it was said Bontempelli instead of Merrett then I'd maybe believe it but we don't throw that type of offer around.

We need to be in the ear of young Sa lads as I'm sure we are.
Top of my list Choppy junior and Dylan Stephens.
Obviously Rankine and Luko aswell but I feel Rankine would go to Adelaide.

Merret is good enough for a contract like that, but yeah I’d be hesitant. At his best he’s a top 10 midfielder in the comp, at his worst he’s a pea hearted Bryce Gibbs clone.

Hard to imagine 900k but if that’s the market?
Quality free agents get well above perceived market generally speaking.
Only question is does he value add to the side and what does our cap look like and managing said cap and we pretty much get it right as a rule.
He will be here next year.

Not that he is a need or we should be chasing him but whats the story with Will Gould? Havent heard a word about him since he was drafted to Sydney.

You have to pay overs to get blokes like Merrett. He would be our top earner in his first two years of a long deal when he comes. It would even out over the length of the deal i would suspect.

You'd think so. Not to mention for how great Boak is going, unreliable SPP mentally, it seems logical we need another safety net. Getting marquee players is difficult, so if we can prize it open why not go for it.
