Tom Rockliff doing sideline commentary at the Crows-Demons game.

Looks to have settled into retirement very comfortably. Pink of cheek and heavy of jowl.

Anyone going to the game tomorrow and know what section they are in?
In the final v Pies last year all except VIP's were behind the goals in section 230 to 234, & 225-229 in the direction of the interchange bench side
In that game they must not have been able to afford Gabba staff to take down the netting behind the goals as it stayed up all day
Pretty annoying. I understand netting staying up at the other end as no spectators to throw ball back into play
Other sections 225 to 229 were also open and full if you wanted to sit in the sun. That Pies game was played 1.05pm on 19/3/2022 a nice 29 C
So at a guess these will be the sections open tomorrow. Entry via the main gate i assume

Highest score so far is 44 being 6 goals 8 behinds
Scoring is still an issue with the AFLW even with shorter quarters
Only 1/2 way through 1st round so maybe a few higher totals to come

Really wish people would get over this need for massive scores in the women's game. It's a league still in its infancy and it will take years of girls developing their skill level through the age divisions b4 high scores become common place. High scores aren't the be all & end all.

Agreed. The nature of the women’s game is always likely to involve less scoring because of the average length of kicks for a start. The field is the same size but the kicks, on average, cover less ground. That doesn’t mean the skills aren’t there.

What has already started happening is that kick accuracy has improved significantly since the league started, ball movement out of contests is getting better, even as fitness and skill improvements make the game more contested, space and width is being used better every year.

I doubt the womens game will ever look exactly like the mens game but will instead develop its own unique patterns and strategies that play to the physical differences. I think there might be a few male players who would wish they had the ability to dodge and evade defenders like some of the women can. With slightly less speed and body weight, some of those women seem to be able to change direction in an area the size of a postage stamp.

Viva la difference.

Looks like a nice strong tag on Kiara Bowers is in order based on those graphs. I assume she is topping out the Dockers in most of those categories.
Of the stats categories, the only one in which Bowers isn't top is uncontested possessions, where she ranks second.

I’m prepared to cop some criticism for this.

I watched the Hawks v Essendon game last night, and it looked like a lot of players were carrying a fair bit of extra weight, when compared to our girls, or looking at the Adelaide girls, where both teams are usually very athletic looking.

If it was a mens team, there would be lots of comments about X player being overweight and out of shape.

Disagree and i did not call for "massive scores"
If you want fans to turn up regularly then the scoring has to be better than the present average score
The ladies are really good at tackleing and applying constant pressure
But this creates lots of stoppages
They are not very good at effective handballs in excess of 5 meters. Getting better but a long way to go
Handballs do not appear to be high on coaches teaching agenda. Some clubs doing okay in this area but the vast majority are not
A lot of other skills need to improve before we get better scoring. Easy set shots regularly missed should be an easier fix
As you mentioned the league is young but going into it's 7th season
Expansion again this year dilutes the talent pool.

Maybe playing 18 (presently 16) on field will help to increase scoring.
On the other hand maybe 18 would increase stoppages but i think it would be worth a go
So 18 on field and only 3 interchange (5 presently) keeps the total players each game the same. Increase interchange numbers to compensate
Also with this change no increase in salary cap for clubs

I will be interested in crowd numbers this season
Average crowds decreased a lot during the covid years so this season will be a better guage

Off to the Gabba later today so hope we get the better of Freemantle and no injuries

I still want that "first team to kick 100" record !
C'mon girls !

Whilst some higher scoring would be nice, what I really want to see is continuous movement of the ball. Doesn't have to be precision, just keep the footy in motion. Umpires remembering that law 18.6.4 exists and applying it would be of great benefit (also applies to the men's game).

I know what you're saying, but should the men be criticised in that manner? Besides body shape doesn't necessarily = fitness.

But there's bound to be some differences in approach between teams - some might be more focused on skills and structure to try and build what could be considered overall weaker lists. It will come.

When the men were part timers I doubt there was a lot of comments about player X being overweight and out of shape (hell, check out the shape of some of the guys in the non-full time mens' leagues today).
