Game Day 2022 AFL Grand Final : Geelong v Sydney

Imagine the site of Isaac Smith with a Norm Smith in the hoops 🤢

When I look at the best players for the Cats today (Selwood, Hawkins, Smith, Duncan , etc) it seems to indicate that strong, mature bodies still get it done in finals.

Reminds me of our great teams if the 1980s that kept getting written off for being too slow and too old but damn they just kept winning! Some powerful units in those sides well (Dipper, Ayres, Dunstall, etc).

All the talk about Cats being a geriatric home misses the point that strong, mature powerful men win games if AFL footy and makes me question somewhat the focus on youth and the draft.

Also makes me think we don't place enough emphasis on power/muscularity, the Cats were easily the biggest side in the comp this year.

I've said it many times before but I really, really hope we get some serious gym time into the likes of Day, DGB, etc as quite frankly I don't see how they could compete with the likes of Hawkins, Dangerfield, etc at their current build.
There are some massive trade offs getting bigger though. Cats can’t cover the ground of the other teams.

It’s worked well for them at their postage stamp ground. But it’s also been the reason they have lost in their last few finals series. As it doesn’t translate well to bigger grounds. And moving to faster players has given them more success.

Where they’ve got lucky this year is lions and swans have played perfectly into their hands.

Some things don't change

Cameron with only 1 more disposal. In a one sided thrashing and he still can’t get his hands on it.

Always been overrated for mine. Always failed to stand up in the big games.
'Flat track ' Cameron , watch if this continues to blow out he will snag 3-4

I'd say though that being bigger on average than your opposition gets you enough wins to make the finals (with how much an emphasis there is on contested ball these days).

And if you make the finals often enough sooner or later you will get lucky and win a GF.

Our midfield in particular is so small it is no wonder we get smashed in contested ball. We only started to turn it around when we added our own midfield bull in Newk.

A 22 week AFL season is a long, hard grind and bigger bodies can absorb the hits (and dish them out) more consistently than lighter, framed endurance runners (which is where I think our fitness team has been veering towards the last 5 years).

Just annoys me when coaches say that their team lost cause the opposition was bigger and more mature bodies. Be like and NBA coach saying they lost cause the opposition was 6 inches taller than them 🤪

Hawkins and Smith best 2 to half time for real impact.

Smith has a pretty good GF record. Could have won 2015 Norm.

Not a fan of him now he wears blue and white hoops, but it is hard to deny Smith is a big game player. Hawks liked the look of him when he dominated the VFL grand final and he kicked the crunch goal in the 2013 grand final to snuff out the Dockers. Gets maligned for the kick after the siren against Geelong, but his record is first class.

Hawkins and Smith leading the norm smith charge. They would like to give it to either but love to give it to Selwood, who was huge in the first quarter to set this up.

Yep all true. Including the bit about not being a fan now lol….

But yep a big game player. Has the energy and temperament for the occasion
