I think I missed the exaggerated criticism though?
I’m being serious here. The suggestion Ratts doesn’t talk to the players at the break was obviously silly, but was that criticism?
I'm talking in general, nothing to do with that specific post.

So ok to call other posters dumb but hey don't post about footy
you and i have both said much worse
just weak,
Thought he called the post dumb. I would say it is more ignorant of what football coaches of any code do with their players in breaks.
If the players aren't following instructions its on the players.
If they can't follow the coaches instructions they can **** off and we will get players who can.

Yeah, I know, but wouldn’t it be nice, just occasionally, to barrack for a team that gets there with minimum angst.
Oh, to be a Cats supporter.

Or Sydney. I think both have missed only a couple of finals series in 16 years or something. Bulldogs played a PF against us in 2009, rebuilt, won a GF, rebuilt played off in another GF. Got gifted to top 2 picks in 2 years that should turn into stars and have Smith and Naughton who look like they could be in the best handful of players in the league.

We have King and some academy kids that we hope will be stars. We lost a lot of draft picks to top up to where we are now, we don't have a huge youth group taken high in the draft to rely on to push us up the ladder from underneath and our senior core aren't doing it.

We are so far down the road we probably can't turn back so have to keep topping up and hoping. If they don't fire next year it's almost a big reset or rebuild needed.

Hate saying this
But Essendon list of young players is so good, they are building a very good list

Redman is going to be a star. Wouldn't mind putting an offer in for him.

Yes they have some kids, but like us, lack a midfield

This is again one of those cases of a myth. They keep getting mids but don't improve so get more mids and still don't improve. Parish, Merrett, Shiel, Caldy, Hobbs, Stringer can go in and impact, so can guys like Durham and Guelfi. That should be plenty enough to compete with any of the mid tier sides or better. They have issues in their forward line IMO. Probably a couple of KPs off really challenging now.

Shiel has been really good the last 6 - 8 weeks
Caldy & Hobbs will be 200 game players

Congrats to Essendon for doing their annual “play terribly until the bye then play insanely well to finish mid table and have a mediocre draft pick.”

Then the plan needs a rethink.
I know there’s another team out there trying to prevent us playing our game, but how can they not be able to execute pressure and tackling?
Isn’t that a non-negotiable.
Personally you shouldn't have to say run harder in defese and tackle harder, etc. They should be just non negotiables, but I'm not sure whether we are holding the team consistently to the standard required

Saw on the couch the afl have come out and said they won't be paying frees when people duck, lift an arm, drop at the knees etc to force high contact. We'll see how that pans out.

It'll take a while to work out the kinks even if they're serious. There are the obvious ducks, there are going to be guys trying to evade tackles which will be 50/50 and there will be the usual clumsy high contacts which might also have a guy ducking into contact which would have been high no matter what. It'll take time to iron out even if they're serious.

Imagine trying to distinguish between a player going in to contest the ball and copping one on the arm that goes high and a player lifting their arms to initiate a high shot.

Insanity from the AFL. Keep it simple, ducking and throwing your head back fine, all the rest put the onus on the tackler.

It needs to be addressed. Now the onus is on the umpires to get the call right which is a good start. Yes it's hard, but that's why you're getting payed heaps for it. STFU and do your job.

I disagree, head high contact is head high contact. Umpires dont get paid heaps and the standard of umpiring is already poor (added to with overly complicated interpretations and updates every other day).

If the head is sancrosanct then leave the rule, the ducking rule is already there anyway, and put the onus on the tackler.

Most of Ginnivans ones are clearly high tackles no matter how you interpret it.

We can disagree then. Players will stop ducking over night if the umps stop rewarding it. Better for everyone.

The ducking rule like some others is there but doesn't get enforced anymore. It's easier for the umps just to penalize the tackler on every occasion because they have a perpetual out on safety and/or technical grounds. It's exactly this shit that's wrecking the game.

I've repeated ad nauseam, make the umps ultimately responsible again and promote them on the quality of what they deliver. None of the "technically this or that" bullshit. Make them accountable, get more in to the system and the cream will rise to the top. The same as every other results based industry.

Well see how you feel when the natural absurd overcorrection means we miss a bunch of high free kicks this week.

I agree on accountability but imagine for a second that your workplace just randomly started changing what you are responsible for delivering every couple of weeks? Now imagine your job is carried out in one of the most complex 360 degree fast paced sports in the world with millions watching your every move.

Maybe just let the umpires do their jobs instead of arbitrarily changing the rules and the interpretations of said rule week on week.
