We went well in the first half because we kept Gawn, Oliver & Petracca quiet. In the 2nd half Oliver & Gawn smashed us. The ball rarely came into our forward line in the 2nd half so the quality of the way it came into our forward 50 was irrelevant. I would back our full strength forward line against Melbourne's defence every day of the week. The key to beating Melbourne is to keep those 3 blokes (Gawn, Oliver & Petracca) relatively quiet. Our bottom 6 is much better & stronger than theirs.
That's true - losing that badly in the midfield makes it hard. I think a fit J Berry could be very good for us as a defensive centre square player, making sure the other side doesn't waltz it out.

From memory though we did have patches where we were getting it down there in the second half, but our entries became very tame. I think it's important we don't just break down across half forward when we are under pressure getting it into the forward line, and that's where a bit more accountability comes in, with key forwards changing their mindsets a bit when we are struggling.

I would add to that that in the first half everything was on our terms, we were getting it forward and marking everything so even when we didn't score or turned it over, there was no easy intercept mark or fast break. In addition to their mids getting on top in the second half they switched to pretty kamikaze ball movement and our pressure fell away totally, barely forcing any turnovers.

I don't think we have the cattle to shut Gawn, Oliver and Petracca out all game but when we do have dominance as we did in that first half, we have to maximise our opportunities and not allow quick ball movement to lead to rebound scores.

not sure you can win locking down Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Brayshaw etc etc
you win as who you have is up to the job on your side and other players to break even.
I know finals players carrying things although Gardiner was way under done, Harris had a bad knee.. Berry/Cocky been out most of the year.
Does not help.. Joe went missing I think only game zero goals all year. bad timing.

I know I keep going on about the second ruck and Fullarton is young and Jackson further along development.
Oscar did as well as he could against Gawn was on ground 97% compared to Max 89%
Max 37 hitouts 19 disposals and 6 marks vs Oscar 30 hitouts 16 disposals and zero marks.
Although as second ruck/forward Fullarton 1 hit out, zero marks and 6 disposals from 80% game time vs Jackson 12 hitouts, 9 disposals and 3 marks from 68%.
Interesting and telling both our rucks did not take one mark for the game

Jackson is a super talent and could really play just about anywhere.Unless Fullerton is going to play in the back half he could do worse than model himself on Jackson.

I was talking about the regular season game. The final we were out of cattle and pretty overwhelmed, quite lucky to theoretically be in it until the last 5 minutes of the second quarter.

I think you under rate our list...in my opinion.

our forward line is the best in the comp....in my opinion.

I think that is hard to dispute when we have a forward line of:

Cameron Daniher McStay
McCarthy Hipwood Zorko

Rotating: Rayner Cockatoo Bailey

We showed last year when we had our best forwards in we were almost unstoppable.

I rate our list very highly, and agree with you that when all are fit we have the best forward line in the comp. But I don't think we currently have the capacity to smother a team like the Dees, particularly Gawn, Petracca and Oliver, for anything more than a patch in games - if they are fit and in form. Melbourne had the luxury of pretty much perfect fitness and form of their most important players all year. I'm very bullish about our chances and I expect us to be one of the 2-3 teams that will properly contend for the flag this year.

To me, the biggest thing we can do this year to improve is not really related to how talented our list is - its maximising our periods of dominance in games against quality opposition, and minimising the score when under the pump. In the regular season game against the Dees and the final v the Dogs we had patches where we were totally in control, but all too often the opposition was able to get a relatively easy score. So many instances of our defenders flying in the contest to help out but leaving their man free to crumb.

I don't know if thats something we need to work on team defence wise or what (I'm not a footy coach), but that is where I think we can gain an edge compared to last season.

Harris (noticeably struggling), Gardiner (just not ready for finals footy), Birchall (5 years past his prime), imo we will be a much better backline this year and will be able to cover the ground much more quickly than we did late last year. Kiddy with a full year in the backline, Answerth fit and ready. Possible even Madden.
Add to that a fit Lachie Neale and Jarrod Berry in the middle a fit Cockatoo a fit Daniher both with another pre-season under their belts.
A fit and healthy Hipwood and Rayner come finals time.
There is many areas where we will be a much better team this year, and a deeper list that bats further down the order.

I think our forward line on song can be the best. Defensively we have a couple of one way runners which does not help
Our backline one of the best defensively although we lack run.

I think Oscar is a good ruck.. not a Gawn, Nic nat type but a good ruck.
We are one of the only teams without a second ruck who can break even.
Personally I think our problems is lack of run and some difference and speed in mid to break the lines.

Edit Also add we have not lost many games over the past few years.
Most of the losses have the same theme.
A team with more run and overlap bring the ball of HB or just behind centre. Run in a wave, break the lines and move the ball quick.
Our defense works more as a team with coverage. if you get it in quick you force one on ones.
Why you often see a player lead out in front and take a easy chest mark against us, as the zone is cut.
We lack some players in the mid with good run.. Clugga and a fit J Berry can help.

Yes we can do the same against other teams.. Although every game flows.. Against better sides you both get turns.
What you do in that burst or to counter it wins the game

I know people here hoping Rayner and Cocky be a difference for us this year.. I hope they are right.
Need them more hot then cold.. Charlie as well.

We seem to get hurt more on the rebound than the other comparatively good teams . The dogs just hang in there against us and kill us when it turns over.

I don't have the answer except to say with a fitter stronger list the coaches will be working on it. Our problem isn't scoring . We know we can score. When our pressure lags our legspeed gets exposed and all of our effort hasn't been properly replicated on the scoreboard. That in itself is energy/confidence sapping.

Last year I think we were getting better at resting for periods in games but not having the opposition score so much when it was their turn . So hopefully with the fitness and list upgrades we can get a lot better at that. The two finals games really highlighted how hard it was for us to stop the opposition's momentum but as others have said we were carrying a few players.

I wonder if Mitch is staying home this week and not playing the game on the weekend? Depending on when these photos were taken.

With the boys having flown out this morning due to the flooding so they can train before the game this week.

Lions to flee Queensland early with training base metres under water

“After missing a training session on Monday, the men will fly out on Wednesday morning to complete a session in Melbourne later that afternoon.”

I wonder if Mitchell Cox will go with the team to Melbourne. The preseason SSP trade deadline is Wednesday March 9th
Doubtful he has been able to impress anyone what with the floods and i assume no outdoor training.
A VFL game Lions v Southport was set down for Saturday but no guarantee to proceed
Their may be another intraclub but can't see that being a good guide to his abilities

Question: What is the contract length if you take someone in the preseason SSP draft

Would be 8-9 months at this point. I can’t remember whether contracts roll over end of October or November.

It’s not a draft.

Watching the Fox season preview the consensus of the commentators was that Melbourne play Team Defence and that Brisbane are not quite there I.e some players don't run both ways.
Such analysis is way above my pay-grade especially as I only watch on TV.
Any thoughts?

I rate our list higher than the Bulldogs (and not that different from the Demons). A fit Hipwood and McStay and we would easily beat the Dogs. A fit Payne and we win that game. We had large periods of midfield dominance despite playing with an injured Neale, returning Berry, unfit Cockatoo, no Rayner. The difference was Payne going down and the Dogs triple teaming Daniher so all our forward 50 entries were easily rebuffed until the Dogs could finally get a stoppage win and advance the ball. Birchall retiring means we can get a more accountable defender in place and our attack wont be suffering much given the limitations of Birchall near the end and the development of players like Coleman and Answerth. Demons May/Lever/Petty wont be able to contain a fully fit Daniher/Hipwood/McStay; especially if the crumbing forwards are Cameron and McCarthy with Rayner/Berry/Cockatoo/Bailey rotating as a M//F. Andrews/Gardiner/Adams are formidable enough to neutralise Brown/Jackson/Fritsch. Given our relative youth we should be primed for a period of dominance. I think 2019 was a fluke of having an easy draw and underestimated line up. 2020 we had a significant advantage against lockdown fatigue and a healthy list. 2021 was when our window would have officially begun with all our 2017+ draft players entering their prime years and our young talls maturing. The only list I am worried about in the future are the Dogs with JUH/Darcy/Naughton and their cavalcade of midfield talent.

The first line of this is key to 2022 i think.

Our backline has so much natural improvement in it. Darcy massively underrated and was so underdone. harris our best and looked awful with his injury. And birchall was such a weakness in terms of actual defending.

Our midfield yes could do with more speed, but it seems that will happen with some shuffling.

Forward line undoubtedly very good if it stays fit. Need some calmer delivery in finals.

But improve that backline and we give it an almighty shake.
