Hunter Clark is just Jack Bowes.

Agreed - which makes his omission all the more baffling.
I'd still take Clark though - but I suspect a lot of clubs would as well.

Why do you think Bowes isn't in favour with Dew?

Is it training, clash of personalities, attitude? I cannot see why he hasn't had a run of 6-8 games to show wether he will or won't make it.

Any ideas?

Bowes wasn't fantastic in the VFL and I thought he looked off the pace in the AFL, very interrupted pre season and season.
Hoping it's just write off, I'm not going to judge it till next season.

I’ve got a soft spot for Jack.
He’s one of our own, but from the game time I’ve seen him playing, he doesn’t have great game reading or Peripheral vision or even confidence. Compared to say Holland’s who you can see can read the game and is oozing with confidence. He reminds me of Sam Day, good players but no X factor about them.

I think he needs 1 big pre-season before we cast judgement, I'm interested to see what position he trains for

Salty.
Ok, I'll play. He is 23.
Debuted in 2018 as a 19 yr old - played 15 games (no injuries)
2019 - dropped purely on form - played 14 games (no injuries)
2020 - Covid year, played 18 out of 19 games (no injuries)
2021 - injured his shoulder, came back, played up until Rd 13 when a dave McKay high hit left him with a broken Jaw.Came back in round 20 v Carlton - and got cleaned up again.Out for season with concussion.
2022 - started season until his own teammate ran into him leaving him with 3 facial fractures.

If this is "injury prone" then you are a harsh judge mate!
He needed surgery - came back and played the last 5 rounds of the year.

He's 23, played 68 games over 5 seasons - only missing games early due to form as a teenager.

His injuries - shoulder surgery and 2 bouts of facial surgery.

No soft tissue injuries. No recurrent injuries. Just bloody unlucky.

Amazed he is on the trade table - I'd suggest the player wants out, not the club pushing him.

Not sure what your point is,as you could have looked this up as easily as I did and saw that his exclusions from the team were form and contact injury related.

You don't think he's good enough for the mighty GCS, but 30 yr old journeymen,or washed up A graders are?

This club really gets what it deserves at times.

He would be a brilliant pick-up.

My original comment was actually made of glass but yes not like that matters anymore.

I never said he’s not good enough for Gold Coast. But why would I get my hopes up when he’s in contract and had no links to the Gold Coast at all.

Suns have never landed a big fish since their inaugural squad. So why would I want to spam the thread with blokes who have no links?

Washed up A graders like Buddy who kicked 50 goals and actually been linked to the Suns?

Those 50 goals would be real handy this year, would of kicked us into finals for the first time.

Dusty who still good enough to play for Richmond but not for us? Yeah sure they aren’t the best blokes around but where are we gonna find money for LDU.

Not like Craig Cameron and Kal Burns even read this thread.

If hunter Clark wants out that would be fantastic but what are we gonna offer him? 600k? We’ll we’re back to square one aren’t we?

Like I’ve said before we already have developing a grade talent on the list, we need role players on the cheap to fill out the list. Happy to hit the draft with 5&7, these inflated contracts will be running out next year anyways.

Thanks for the polite reply.

Let's agree to disagree on future signings.

All I would say is that we are in a very unique situation with some space in the cap, and with delistings/trades a chance to increase that space.
We have a ton of picks we won't use.

At some point we have to try to break the cycle of signing average players /journeymen and make a bold pitch.

It starts by getting the parent club onside - so I'd love it if we publicly identified a target and put it out in the media that we were offering an irresistible package to the host club.
If the club want to move on a player, and the offer is big enough to get the home fans onside - it usually is enough to get it done.

My biggest worry is we move some players on, make a bit of cap space and then bring in 6 kids rather than 2 decent players to push us into the 8.

You are correct in saying it's new ground for us, but someone has to be the first good player under 25 to come up.

Sorry, but 35 yr old buddy or a mentally finished Martin won't sell us as a destination club to ambitious players - and it's ambitious players we need - those who want to come up to chase a flag.
Not the JJ's of this world, who want one last big paycheck.

Trying for players like Clark,Thomas or James Jordan at least shows future ambition.

I know what I'm trying to say, others may say it better.

Have a great weekend mate, and enjoy the finals. :thumbsu:

i'm backing bowes. he's played out of position a lot, but i'm confident he'll be dominating soon.

we just need a bit more time. these kids are all still young, we're one of the younger teams again this year.

we'll have a lot more equality across our list when we have a greater quantity of older players, that have played 10 years plus. half their salary won't be under the cap and you'd think will typically be a bit lower like hawkins. if we keep trying to poach old heads looking for a 5 year deal it's kind of the wrong tactic. tbh we just need to develop and keep our current guys and let the list develop to balance our cap out.

That’s where your wrong.. I believe we finished the year with the 7th oldest average age.

The time has come.

Witts Collins swallow all heading downhill from here..

How many more years would you like to wait?

Look we aren’t far off in who we want coming to the suns. I do love young talent too but I don’t have any sources like you do so im only going off what is reported.

In my ideal world, the Heath Chapman, max Holmes, Luke Davies-uniacke, will day of the worlds would be my priority but no point living in dream land.

Suns can only do so much, and that’s let us down every season.

Our core of the next 5 years is still very young as a group. (age as of round 1 next year)
I'm sure these 16 players will be there. (pending trades)

Weller 27
Chol 26
Farrar 26
Ainsworth 25
Ballard 23
Powell 23
Anderson 22
King 22
Lukosius 22
Rowell 21
Budarick 21
Davies 20
Jeffrey 20
Hollands 20
Andrew 19

Older guys that will need replacing
Witts
Swallow
Ellis
Collins

Replaceable guys in the best 30
Lemmens
Holman
Bowes

Young guys -too early to know
Rosas
Moyle
Flanders
Sharp

if we're trading in players. I want them to either
  • be a senior, experienced player to fill a gap and bring leadership for 1-2 years . (ie. JJ)
  • Go into the best 22 'core' for next 5 years (ie. Hunter Clark)
  • Be a talented 'young guy' too early to know but have potential to join the best 22 core. (ie. Bruhn)

You're hired

Don't let the Crows screw you over on this deal, they still have some decent small forwards, start with a direct swap with Rachele then move to a first round plus Pedlar or Milera , they will probably offer you Jimmy Rowe
What's happened to Sholl? Thought he was looking promising.

With a likely reduction in list size this year we probably aren't interested in a pick + a player. I'd take 5 and some late swaps to move something to next year.

Haha
Was I stating the obvious?

Just don't want 23 - 28 year olds that aren't long term best 22 players
ie. Long, Aaron Francis, Elliot Himmelberg..
No it's a good common sense approach I think. The majority of our improvement next year will come from within our young group (and adding Ben King) so I'm not too concerned about our trade period. A half back would be smart though for the right price.
