Dunkley's situation is pretty interesting right now. A few weeks back people thought he was a done deal to head to Port Adelaide. Then Brisbane came to the party and we find out he's supposedly open to a move to Queensland; apparently his partner is from Queensland and his sister lives in Queensland.

For us, we know our club has recently engaged in conversations with Dusty Martin about potentially moving here and that clearly means we have ability to clear a lot of cap should we need to. Perhaps the reason Dunkley hasn't requested any kind of trade yet is because we've come to the party late and offered him more than Brisbane or Port?

I would like Dunkley but I don't reckon it is really necessary. I would rather Flanders gets those mid minutes next year as he's primed to breakout and we could end up losing him if we get Dunkley.
Someone like Dunkley is currently better than Flanders. He instantly improves our age profile and experience out of the middle, freeing up Touk, Anderson or Rowell more.

I agree he is not necessary, but would be our second or third best mid instantly. We should definitely be having a crack at him if he is even mildly open to moving to QLD.

Agree, plus we have seen players that have left the ☀️ thrive in other teams. Why should we be so certain that Dunkley will play as well for us?

Develop what’s left of the riches we have been given

I get it and agree with your points but I would rather see who breaks out next year and then target a gun mid end of next year off the back of finals (hopefully).

For two reasons;

  1. We should see who breaks out next year, Flanders or Davies could explode then we will be already too stacked in the midfield plus we could be drafting another gun mid this year.
  2. We should hopefully have made finals so less likely to have to over pay someone to come here, more leverage on our side. If we do it this year we will have to pay Dunkley more than Brisbane.

The problem is.. midfielders can only explode.. if given minutes in the midfield.. and many.
Not 5 bounces a game.
It’s upto Dew.

Mind you the article just posted on AFL.con.au has few saying he looking at Flanders and Ainsworth midfield time

So anything possible

I am bullish on Flanders for next year. I reckon the penny dropped in the VFL finals. He will see significant minutes next year and I expect Swallow will probably spend more time on the flanks.

True.

Overpaying for a gun mid/player could improve our odds of making finals next year though, thereby making us a more attractive prospect for any other players (or our own draft picks who might stay for less in the future etc).

Both arguments are valid.

Agree totally. I would prefer we take a long term strategy rather than throw the kitchen sink at Dunkley short term. It would certainly help us next year but we are trying to build a dynasty.

I guess getting a players gives us 4-5 years based on the contract for that player to be in our team.

Some of our top draft picks have one year to run on their contract, so they could leave anyway after their “breakout” season, leaving us in a cycle. They could also re-sign on a long-term deal. Who knows.

I kind of want to take the known quantity, if the right player is actually available (which no indications say they are). It’s all wishful thinking right now.

Supporting Liverpool I’ve been used to being linked to a lot of players but we have held our cards close to our chest recently and signing blokes with basically 0% links. (Fabinho, Arthur, Jota, Konate, Diaz)

It seems we may be doing the same at the Suns. All this random talk at Heppell & JJ and no one mentioned Long.

Wasn’t much talk of Chol & Atkins really either it just got done

If we did land Dunkley I’d be convinced this is the path we’ve chosen.

No one knew what King, Luko & Rankine intentions were either.

It would just be the Rankine money surely? It's not like he would be getting 1 mil+.

Dunkley is the A grader we desperately need to give us that bump into finals. Just imo he's a gun and if we signed him and don't get any major injuries we're a lock for finals.

Also, not having a go at you YT but saying what if he doesn't do well here is massively small time. He will 100% be better than Davies (who I love)/Flanders/Bowes etc over the next few years. If that means we lose Flanders next year so be it imo.

I never said he wouldn't do well here but yes you are correct he would be better. I do agree with every point contrary to mine people have presented here. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't be against it at all, he's a gun. I just am not sure it is entirely necessary and will cost a lot. I don't see the Rankine money as something we should look to fill because even with Rankine going we are going to face serious cap pressure with all these young blokes so in one sense it is probably a blessing and cap space we should hold on to for a hot minute.

Looks increasingly unlikely that we will get hold of the Lions first round pick, not that it was a great pick anyway. I wonder what the club will do with all these pics we won’t use, perhaps trade them into next year again for lesser value as they have done for the last couple of years.?
