SUNS EYE BRISBANE FORWARD

GOLD Coast is interested in Brisbane's out-of-contract small forward Tom Berry.

Berry, the younger brother of Lions star Jarrod, is out of contract and has struggled to break into the Lions' team consistently this season, playing only three games in 2022.

The Lions have offered Berry a contract but he remains unsigned and has gathered interest from the Suns.
The Suns will lose gun small forward Izak Rankine to Adelaide but have also been in the market for a pressure player, with Berry's speed and tenacity a key part of his game.

Berry has played 20 games for the Lions since being drafted by the club at the end of 2019.

Clubs have been looking at the Lions' depth players this season, with Deven Robertson having interest through the year but breaking back into the senior team for its finals series. – Callum Twomey

Got excited when Berry popped up.
20 forgettable games in 3 years.
Wrong Berry from the wrong club.
Oh well.

Hard frickin' pass.

Lose an A-Grader,then replace with a d-grader as 'he is cheap'.

Maybe don't waste a pick and use it with others on someone better. Make a godfather offer.

Get SAM Berry from crows instead - Or James Jordan - or go again at Tarryn Thomas (who may stay now Clarkson is surely done for good after the latest news broke - Clarkson will be lucky to stay out of court, let alone coach in the AFL).

Use our 3 picks on ONE of those - 25, 32, 33 - and each one will be gettable.

Adelaide,Melbourne and Norf need draft picks - use 25, 32 + 33 to get a club onside to move a good player on.

Don't WASTE, because it is a waste, pick 33 on Tom Berry.

Brisbane lost Robinson, and Matheson may move on, - they need a 'tough' mid/forward - but they are happy to let him and Ely Smith go.

Shows how little they rate T.Berry and E.Smith.

There is better out there. Get the 'selling club' onside and pressure usually gets a trade done.

Tom Berry. FMD.

On a brighter note - delighted for Chris Burgess - tried his guts out every game.

Limited footballer who gave 100% every game to just make the grade - but he DID give 100%.

Which is why he can stay and Sharp can piss off.

Tom Berry - **** me.

I’d be happy to bring in Narkle from
cats.. he is something our midfield lacks. Speed and aggression

If he a delisted free agent his contract would be peanuts

Really baffles me why Narkle hasn't been getting a run. Rate his game highly. Knows how to win the ball from the contest too

His issue is off-field.
Similar to Carey and Smith

Tom Berry - * me.
With North backing clarkson I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas gets out while he can. They won't know till well after trade period if he is going to be there.

I was wondering if the speed thing was just me. Good Lord he's slow. One game last year l watched the way he moved it looked like he was running in gumboots.
Everyone tells me it's because he's coming back from injury, but even then you shouldn't be getting mown down by opposition ruckman in the VFL from behind

Would be a great prototype for a hard and lightning fast HB. Could be an astute move by Craig.

I was also a big Tom Berry fan in his draft year.
Not excited about T Berry. Cheap depth - maybe. Best 22? I seriously doubt. 4 years in a system. Nowhere near Holman type output. IMO, close to de-list on Lions list.

No stat pops out, quite contrary. Unless he got some crazy pressure stats I don't see it. Holman and even Macpherson are killing it compared to him.

3 games in 2022 - 6.0 disposals , 2.3 tackles
11 games in 2021 - 3.4 disposals average 1.8 tackle
I’m not sure what role he is playing in VFL but certainly decent stats.
22 possessions, 5 tackles, nearly goal a game.
His ‘averages’ in the AFL are significantly influenced by number of games as the sub.

Take a gander here;

His worst games against us cos he wanted to help his new team

Gold Coast will be forced to match bids on a pair of promising academy prospects next year after the AFL stripped back some of its draft concessions.
However the Suns could yet retain their priority access to Darwin with the league deferring a call on whether Gold Coast will keep its preferential treatment in the NT capital.

Gold Coast received a host of concessions at the end of 2019, most notably being granted pick No. 1 in that year’s draft, allowing them to take both Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson.

Among the other allowances provided to the Suns was the ability to pre-list players from Darwin and their Queensland academy zone without needing to match bids on those players.
The AFL told clubs this week that the Suns would no longer be able to pre-list Queensland academy players.

That will mean that promising talls Jed Walter and Ethan Read, both eligible for next year’s draft and both of whom played in Saturday’s futures grand final curtain raiser at the MCG, will be subject to bids from rival clubs like northern academy players at other clubs.

But the status of Darwin product Beau Tedcastle, eligible for this year’s draft, remains up in the air. The league has committed to making a decision soon as to whether Gold Coast will have priority access to the forward.

The AFL has also told clubs that the Suns will retain their additional rookie list spots until the end of 2024 at least.

I’m totally fine with this. Will stop the incessant soaking from other clubs and their supporters.
Surprised about list size being the same next 2 years min. We have a signed partnership with NT until the end of 2023. I would be surprised if AFL takes away from us Darwin academy zone right now.

For me ideally we'd lose all concessions this season but NT kids are treated the same as our academy kids going forward.
Think we made some good inroads into the NT in the last 2 seasons. Especially this season with Rosas and Jeffrey having starring games and playing in front of friends and family. Goldmine of untapped talent up there, imagine if we are able to dump money, support and training into some of those kids.

I’d prefer it to reduce the list size, although there’s no stipulation that we must use all spots is there?

Up to us, pretty sure. VFL players either on extended list or if normal list size they would be signed up as VFL only (like Lions). It does not cost us cap to hae more rookies but it does requires development resources to be spend on young kids.
