Disagree on the splitting of pick 3. Take the best available, we will have 19 and 22 as well. No need to Clayton it and try and be to smart
I agree. Take best available or massive overs for us. The reason being our track record with pick swaps is terrible. No need to gamble when we already have a strong draft hand. We are not in a rebuilding stage.

Pick 3 for west coasts 10 and future first Rd pick
We’re not getting any mature A grade talent in this year.
Draftees 5-15 all approx rated same same.

with Clarkson next year and an extra first Rd pick gives us more options to get a star player in
Callaghan is ahead of any other mids and Gibcus fills a vital need. Be stupid to trade 3 and end up with a lesser player. Take who's left and go from there.

Now I hate defending Clayton because he was one of the worst things that happened to this club
BUT
he made this trade in the years before you could trade picks on draft night. If memory serves he was a massive fan of Oliver and had his eyes on him way out from the draft but at the time taking him with 3 would have been a huge reach. He was kind of rated as a pick 15 - 25 talent before absolutely rocketing up the draft rankings a few weeks out post combine. No way he could have expected that to happen.
Yes Paul Roos (Melbourne) was the only person keen to take Oliver that early. He was a massive draft bolter. He also had a cheeky bid on Callum Mills. Both guns

I would be very keen on Callaghan but if we traded back to say a 9&10 or something, Erasmus & Amiss/Andrew would be who i target. Anything below the top 20 there aren't many rated KPP so just take Callaghan.

Callaghan or Gibcus. Either are great and fit a need for us. Amiss is a nice prospect but suspect he ends up top 10 at this rate due to not much KPP talent.

Yeah prefer we took best available and just get a senior KPP in which is probably the better strategy.

Only way we take 3, 19 and 22 into the draft is if we cannot get any deals done. I can see us being used as a club to get points out of with our later picks.

I still hope Callum Coleman Jones is interested in coming to the suns. I think the AFL will let us keep 19 purely cause we are still no there yet on the improvement level which will also mean pre-selection of academy players.

Note: Points for last 4 picks 43, 55, 58, 66 =835 or the equivalent of pick 23.

Maybe Pies or Dogs trade us for a future 2nd

Luke Parker just won the swans b&f and people still say no. If we got the cash no brainer

If we have the cash for him, I would be bringing him in. Would be a great leader to have.
This is where list management becomes difficult. We are going to need money in the bank for next years unsigned stars. By bringing Parker in it might mean we could be loosing an elite young talent Luko King etc because of salary cap restrictions. I really don't know which way the club should go. I would love Parker at the SUNS but at what cost. Illustrates Atkins signing was just plain incompetent.

I suppose the other side of the coin is, if you don't bring in these high quality players who help drive performance, then these young blokes leave anyway because they won't experience success. Hard balance to find.

Really struggling to find where we are paying players right now? Luko and King could potentially take up 1.6mil together next year but who else is getting paid? Witts swallow Weller Bowes Thompson Ballard? Surely no one is on big money, by next year Brodie will be gone and Weller contract up. I’m reading on the Adelaide board Rankine is 700k? Never heard that before but if true, that’s stupid.

Touk will sign a nice one, Collins new contract. But geez everyone else is on peanuts. We have to have some money in the bank if we are supposedly still chasing Chol CCJ dunstan and hartlett.

Gotta bring in a graders when you can though, we been crying for it for years.

Least this is better than last years betts, Burgoyne situation

Tbh all this about A graders.. I look at a team like Richmond.. who do they have.. Dusty..
That’s about it..
there coach got them playing there roll for the team.

but I do know… our midfield goes missing far to often

Everyone else's peanuts is 350k, ours is 500k. The curse of being rubbish

When are we going to make a move and secure someone like Luke Parker that can genuinely contribute massively towards us playing finals and putting forward the best argument to keep our young talent? Honestly, if the only thing preventing Parker from joining us is the fact that we have to pay 700k a season for him then I would question our recruiting staff's decision making. Look at what GWS did before they shot up the ladder and made it to a prelim in their first finals appearance - secured a 28 year old Heath Shaw, a 28 year old Ryan Griffen and a 27 year old Shane Mumford. Those guys didn't come cheap for GWS.

Why are we not doing what we can to secure the Swans current best and fairest winner? Sydney had an amazing season with a young team and Parker clearly contributed massively to that. His leadership and experience would be enormous for our young team. Plus, Dew has an existing relationship with him and he's a free agent so it would cost us nothing at the trade table!

I just don't get why we're actively choosing to go down the draft path year after year when it's never really worked for us in terms of jumping significantly up the ladder. We all know how important 2022 is with the young guys we have coming off contract so I really feel strongly that we need to make a move now and just secure a guy like Parker to give ourselves the best chance to win lots of games next year. I know people are going to argue that paying 700k for a 28 year old Parker will cost us some of our players down the track (which is speculative) but you know what basically guarantees young players leaving? Continuing to lose more games than you win. I'm sick of this perpetual cycle of high end draft picks coming in and going out a few years later.

GWS have proven this year that winning games is the best form of retention. Virtually every trade expert would have said at the start of this year that either Josh Kelly and/or Jacob Hopper were near certainties to leave the Giants yet here we are in September with both players re-signing and the Giants competing in another finals series. We could learn a lot from GWS...

They did have Rance Lynch Riewoldt Houli as a graders, Grimes, Edwards & Cotchin were borderline A graders with their form.

Dusty was of course superstar level

They where all A graders, Grimes was close to the best defender in the comp over a 4 year stint, underrated to how good he was.

I think we over-pay our young players earlier than we should. King, Luko etc. shouldn’t be on 750-800k in their third year (or on their first contract extension). They are great players and should be for a long time, but they probably get that money one or two seasons earlier playing for the Suns. Then look at other picks like Wright and Brodie: we pay big money to “lock them in” so we have positive media spins and feel good stories. 2 years later we have no cap space and it turns out we paid players on the potential they could bring…

Miller is probably the only player on our list who currently deserves that money—and he earned it over a body of work and loyalty.

Other players like Swallow deserved it at the time for loyalty, but now we need to make out contracts based on on-field merit or we can never have the cap space to move forward.

We also have to be prepared to lose players if we want to make big trades. As long as it’s not an exodus, as losing players like King, Luko and Rankine in the same year would set us back and set the media into a frenzy, then it’s normal—happens to all clubs. Lose player and gain player, thus staying competitive. Also, if we win more games, we may lose less players or gain better players.

Spot on with this - Freo is losing Cerra this year and no one is freaking out.

just have to make it worthwhile - lose luko, gain Parker for example
