The suns have received approx $250 million from the AFL since they were founded, and are expected to require financial support for decades to come, according to several reports in recent years. GWS are not much different.

All you guys saying the afl wants them to win because of money? How exactly is this a good investment?
Are they going to suddenly become a profit making entity if they win a flag? Brisbane won 3 and are still an AFL leech.
To me it sounds more that gold coast are a sunk cost fallacy example.
“We can’t stop funding them now guys, we need to keep throwing good money after bad at them”
It could take 100 years and billion of dollars of investment for the Suns to ever turn profitable.
You do realise the suns have provided an extra game to sell every week?

AFL is making bank from them coming into the comp

Mitch Edwards on the front page of the AFL website as a likely 2nd round target for clubs tonight, a part of our NGA we can only match after pick 40.

Yet the Suns can match to have 4 first round picks.

How is that allowed? This league is corrupt and ****ing amateur.

Edwards probably goes to wce straight away

If for some reason Edwards makes it to our 38, then we need to bid on GWS academy player and push west coast out of the top 40

It would be our chance of him slipping thru

If there is any other academy player or father son around the 38/39/40 mark that we could bid on at #38 then #39 then we take a pick at #40 pushing us over the line for the scrum.

I don't mind the idea of trading our current pick #41 and the F2 to get both of our picks ahead of #40 to achieve the same result.

Perhaps with Essendon.

Pick #38, Trade #41 and F2 for #39 and F3, then one bid from the two.

I like your thinking, push WC to pick 41 so we can match, it makes trading up to 38 with the suns redundant though as our pick 42 gets eaten matching.

So just to brace for it, if we trade #41 and a F2 to Essendon for their pick #39 resulting in Mitch Edwards not being bid on until at least pick #41 (because there's one more academy/FS bid before then) we are buying the second round pick of Mitch Edwards with a second round pick.

I don't have any value on the pick needed to match, we could trade it with #41 for all I care, the next one is #84 and it's just as effective to match the bid for Edwards.

I think Essendon will take the trade too as long as we aren't picking their target player.

Someone else will take him. You all know how this works.

I doubt WC are in the picture. Just brought in Flynn. And they have invested similar draft capital in recent years on Barnett (pick 23) and Williams (pick 35). The latter 6th in their B&F, which suggests they have bigger needs than getting a 3rd developing ruck on the list.

Yeah he's likely gone on the first pick tonight

I was just throwing out a scenario
I'm just trying to extinguish any hope I may have, because it's the hope that kills you.

Better focusing on other bids ... very very unlikely we match as the two guys in question are gonna be cat B rookies at best

The WC board is harping on about his non footy issues...I'm sure those in the know are aware of them but will they stop him being drafted early on tonight?

Perhaps Walls is talking of our interest and hope that Edwards slips past 40 , with the intention of prompting another club to use a pick on him thus increasing the chance of our real target getting through to our pick.
You can probably tell I’m bored…..

The Suns, as an individual entity, don't have to be profitable to make the AFL money.

The broadcast rights are the pay-off for the Northern clubs. Gold Coast and GWS provide an extra game each week and that extra content makes money for the AFL.

That is sound financial thinking however the trade off is the draft gifts and acadamy gifts disrupt the distribution of talent to all clubs as per pushing back decent fist round picks into second round pick territory.

This draft has had the added disruption caused by the AFL gifting North Melbourne plenty all because they are inept.
