Game Day 2023 AFL DRAFT

I don't particularly hate the SANFL.

It is a fine adult league.

But as a traditional football State we are falling behind. Purely because of the attitude of SANFL league Footy over developing AFL talent.

There is a model in Victoria working well we should emulate.

Would also make undrafted kids better quality for the SANFL.

And let's be honest, everyone here who posts regularly here is an AFL supporter over an SANFL club. We devote more time talking AFL, watching AFL games and financially support the AFL far more than SANFL clubs.

So why not support a better way to develop our kids to play at that level.

Are you involved with juniors at sanfl?

Top 10 should be fair game for everyone, should not be able to match any bid inside pick 10, and any academy pick after 10 you need a pick within 10 picks where the bid came in so if the bid came in at pick 20 you would need a pick between 21 and 30 to match it.

I'm sick of pick 3 being matches with pick 32 34 and 35 just utter bullshit.

Are you involved with juniors at sanfl?
Nope

But have seen a few kids go through the system and a cousin's kid go through the Victorian system.

Very different set ups.

Don't need to be involved to see we are lagging behind. Look at the draft results.

Bite the bullet and accept the AFL money, change the system.

Or be overtaken by Tasmania.

As a Norwood man, what would you prefer.

A good batch of AFL draftees coming from there or SANFL Premiership?

The answer is obvious. With limited resources the Premiership should be the priority. As it should be.

And the reason why junior development should be a stand alone league. As it is in Victoria.

It works.

Our AFL sides being successful would also help. Next year neither side will have won for 20 years.
So any young kids have probably been less swept up in AFL than the generation from 1997 to 2004.

Kids play Footy. Participation is not an issue.

It is the funding and dedication to developing the kids from 16 to 18 to draft quality that is lacking.

I live and work in Melbourne (but grew up in Adelaide hence a mad Crows fan).

The sheer basic facts are that with 5 times the population, Victoria will always produce mroe top end talent on a bigger scale and more consistently.

SA always punches above its weight and still has talent but will come in waves as opposed to every year like Vic.

What's Tasmania's population?

Their program ramped up with AFL funding. Getting results.

Queensland and NSW as well. Yes raw population more than SA. But Aussie Rules participation rate would be less.
AFL funded junior programs.

Getting results.

Yeah it comes in waves. Which means our draftees rely more on natural talent over a system that develops them.

Yes - I'm just talking more in general mate.

But exactly - as soon as AFL pumped money into GC/TAs and selected NSW areas, of course they will get some talent.

SA/SANFL and teh WA/WAFL might be to blame here but also the AFL. Its arrogance at all levels to just assume being a natural Footy state talent will just turn up and be there... Still need to invest into it.

So you want to change the system just as we have a chance to benefit from it? Not during the last 10 years where the Vic teams have cleaned up?

My over arching point here is that SANFL club's priority is to win SANFL flags.

Not junior development.

That is fair enough.

The AFL is the biggest revenue earner in the game. It makes sense that they fund junior development.

TAC Cup, Coates Talent League, is a great model one we should emulate here.

The SANFL don't want this to happen. They think the current model works. It doesn't.

The flow on effect is that undrafted kids are going to be better as well. They go to the SANFL and make that league stronger.

I believe posts like this don't take into account what GC gave up to get such picks. They traded away pick 5 as one example.

This system allows other clubs the chance to obtain higher picks from clubs needing points too.

I believe all NGA, Academy players, F/S should be available for the clubs that put the time into them, forget the Top 40 rule.
What a joke that Bulldogs get their top player, but now others can't.
Also remove the 20% discount. Pay full price.
Never give priority picks.

Without Gold Coast giving up 14 and Burgess for our mid 20s pick we don’t land Curtin and Edwards.

Maybe, but the point is they had to give up some early picks in order to get some of those second and third round picks. We might find ourselves in a similar position with Welsh next year.
We already had a pick to land Edwards.

But yes, trading with both GC & GWS was they key to landing Curtin... & we got Burgess thrown in as a bonus.

So it ended up being:

Out: 12, 31, 33, F2
In: 8 (Curtin), 21 (Edwards), Burgess

That’s a win and a half

One wonders if playing nice regarding the trade for Rankine may have played a part in this. Would they be thinking / planning that far ahead in club land? If you believe Ronald McDonalds post about the next years top 5 not being at the same level as this years then that shows not an unrealistic proposition I suppose.

So I’ve been told by someone who spoke to the Curtin family on draft night that the AFC showed very little interest in Daniel up until 24 hours out. The Curtin’s wanted to stay in WA, but had warmed to the idea of going to Vic. Adelaide was basically a complete shock and they were barely prepared for it. Hence the lack of enthusiasm on draft night.

To be fair on the AFC, they didn’t think he was ever an option until late, so we can’t blame them for not ‘courting’ him.

Up to the club now to make him and his family comfortable. Which I’m backing the club in to do. Not the best start though.

Just rubbish, the SANFL develop players, the SANFL and WAFL don’t receive the funding like the other states. That will hopefully change when they move to West Lakes and build high performance facility.

But given the SANFL is a league on its own, shouldn’t the clubs be striving to win flags? Why not?

Some of the SANFL hate is beyond stupid.

If I was to have a guess as to why our kids arent as highly rated its because there development is stalled as most are forced to play school football instead of competing in the Sanfl. Some of the college teams are exceptional but a lot are mediocre city where the star players would be better off playing against Sanfl opposition. This slows down their development as a lot can't make the case to play reserves. Its a bit of a mess. I presume this is the case with the U18s in Melbourne as well. However Melbourne have more talent to absorb into their elite schools football programs where SA gets thin really quick.
