Ive said it before but I believe the 'best available' approach only applies to the top 10-12 selections or clubs who are content with their list. After that it comes with a caveat of 'list needs'. It's highly subjective and none of us actually know how the recruiting teams approach each draft. We gather each club produces their own draft ratings say 1- 45, I expect that the clubs might also have players rated in tiers or groups. Then they may have something like 5 x identified or wanted players expected to be available around their picks based on list needs, rather than best available. As an example say we have the 5 x players we want at pick #13 - Windsor, Wilson, Leake, Tholstrup & Murphy, all are in that 10-20 rated range but are most importantly list needs. We might have Murphy rated at #20 but because he is a list need he makes the pick #13 wanted group.

Best available also comes into play later in the draft if all the clubs targetted players are off the table and there is a higher rated slider - but again it would be based on list needs eg Isaac Keeler last year. It just doesnt equate that a club might have 4 ruckman of varying ages on their list, that they would take the best available if that is another ruckman.
