Guys, I keep deleting posts referencing this, but can we move away from suggesting or making juvenile jokes about the bloodlines of players.

This is a public forum and parents of players do read here.

Any ITK actually know if we're going to be nominating Dear before the deadline?
We probably will at this stage. We can only make plans assuming no further draft picks with us change hands so say for example Dons bid on McCabe at 9 - we'll have just enough points to cover it but that will be the end of the draft for us.

Say Swans bid on him at 12 (which is a very slight possibility from what we've heard) - we'll only have enough for Dear if he goes at pick 53.

More realistically, if McCabe is bid on at North's pick 17 or 18 we'll be able to take Dear if he goes anywhere after 40 (as Twomey predicts).

Basically though, if we nominate him as a F/S we'll take him even if we have to go into a slight points deficit next year.

That's what's being considered at the moment - where we think he'll go and would next year's deficit be worth it.

In a perfect world, if McCabe and Dear are bid on where the various drafts have them going, it'll all be roses.

The difference between a pick 3 and 4 for example is a lot of points. You’d think any deficit for dear probably wouldn’t even push us back a pick.
Yeah, I thought of that maybe being a possibility. I guess that is a known at the time you decide… although aren’t they reviewing these types of rules. I can’t recall teams going into deficit…

Where does the deficit get taken from next year?

It's not from the future first is it?

Not sure if they changed the rule but it used to be it came from your future first if the deficit was from a first round bid.

Comes from your first pick in the 2nd round onwards if it was a bid after the first round.

Oh for sure, we should nominate all three of McCabe, dear and Jiath. See how it goes. Dear and particularly Jiath would know that things have to go in the right direction for us to step in to match and bid. And if they don’t get selected in the main draft, automatically onto the rookie list for them

Of course, but as an NGA we have a similar nomination and matching process, albeit after pick 40, and Tew would end up on our Cat B instead of Cat A rookie list if he unexpectedly was unselected in the National draft

If we want, we will be able to take Dear if he is bid on outside 1st round with minimal damage. Even if we have 0 points to match.

Deficits are supposed to affect only picks for that round and downwards. So assuming Dear is bid on at say pick 40 and that is 3rd round, puts us in deficit around 300 points which makes any 3rd round pick we hold next yr redundant. Won't affect 2nd and 1st round pick.

On McCabe, we have 1200 points if we exclude 4 from our current hand of 4, 44,47,48,62,63 but it is quite likely we have to drop 62 & 63 as we only have 4 list spots, so go to draft with 4, 44,47,48.
This means we will have 965pts. We may gain 150 pts after Suns & Dogs F/S bids. So assume we have 1120pts.

Dons pick 9(1469pts), should be pick 12(1268pts) on draft night. After 20% discount, we need just under 1000pts at this stage, so we should have points left over to use for Dear and any deficit will be minimal.

Our best case scenario is no one bids on Dear and we can rookie list him.

Source? Never heard this interpretation before. Always thought it was off the first pick in the following draft.

They will play for Brisbane end of story, if you could play close to friends and family why wouldnt you?

Can only hope they change the rules to the corrupt academy rules.

100%. As soon as Hodge moved up here to play for Brisbane I feared it was another Matthews scenario slowly unfolding, this time affecting potential father son's.

I remember many years back after Matthews stopped coaching Brisbane there were still some on here clarmoring for the return of Matthews to coach Hawthorn but it was never going to happen. He's too far entrenched up here with I believe both of his daugthers living up here too, there was no way he was going to move away from them.

The only hope I feel as I don't trust the AFL will change academy rules anytime soon is that Hodge will move his family back to Victoria. But I don't think that's on the cards as speaking from experience being an interstater, Queensland is a great place to raise a young family and from all reports they are very happy up here.

Need to move on.

If I didn't know anything about Dear and just watched those highlights to compare to other draftees, I'd think he was a top 10 prospect and just about the second best KPF behind Walter (Duursma and Caddy not quite tall enough).

Given his late development and grief over his father's passing during his underage years, I think we are only just seeing a glimpse of what he is capable of delivering.

He does all the important things you want to see from a KPF.
Big strong mark, mobile, great hands, likes a tackle, team player.

We have to get him.

He appears to be on a serious upward trajectory. Worth a punt even if we need to take him in the nd. Back our development in as he has some tools. I really like his instincts at ground level too.
I agree, looks to have good hands - both in marks and finding outlets with handballs - as well as good ground ball instincts. Only serious query is that he looks like he takes a bit to get really pumping with his legs, not quick off the mark which is such a huge advantage for a KPP.

3 years out from the draft but we need to move on?
if the kid is any good, the HFC will be all over him when the time is right.

Lots to play out yet.
