What so 2 teams in SA with a historical rivalry and a third team that nobody really cares about?

Seems a bit mad, I don't know the SA demographics though, if any SANFL team has a strong enough supporter base to form an AFL team and maybe historically would be a bigger rival of Port than the Crows are?
What if it was like Glenelg (Red Legs??? Need our SA's to get in and correct me) I could be wrong but I think they have a SANFL rivalry with Port.... (again need the SA sainters to confirm)

20 teams though... ugh

I have just walked back in the door after being in Victoria for the last week.

Had a great couple of days at Apollo Bay, never realised how beautiful the Great Ocean Road is, got in for a swim, great food and spent time with amazing people.

Also went to the Saints v Carlton game sat behind the Saints cheer squad, actually sitting next to a cliche of a Blues supporter - oozed money very loud early then shut up at the end of the 3rd quarter. Great game to be at priveleged to the see the Saints beat Carlton. Then went to the Melbourne Richmond game - could not have seen 2 games umpired more differently. The second game they hardly called anything and the game was better for it. How good is Owen, our game plan and our young bucks!!!

Stayed in Swan street Richmond for the last 4 days, the whole place comes alive when a game is on ....including the Storm game, pubs, restaurants made me realise how good a team in Tassie team in the AFL will be.

be interested in hearing from any Tasmania born / based Saints fans on this question.

If Tasmania get's their own team, would they be your number 1 team or would it still be Saints?

I've spoken to a couple of Tasmanians who support other clubs and they said that they would essentially become Tassie members immediately and support that team primarily. Who are the Tassie supporters on here? Verdun?

Yeah TheOsprey there is different stages for club supporters amongst Tasmanians, bottom line majority will support the new team - buying memberships and still support the team they currently support. My 15 year old son just came out and said he will continue to be a Saints supporter only but will go the games.

I will always support the Saints but I am Tasmanian so I will do both.

Expect there will be a transition period.

There are a lot of very passionate AFL club supporters (one of my best mates is a Geelong supporter and will not change, another a Collingwood supporter the same this goes back generations), I know of some who will never switch but will still the new club.....

Tasmania is an AFL state and I expect the club will be successful quicker than Gold Coast and GWS it might take about 5 years but the club will be successful.

It is happening with 2027 the year believed to be when it will happen. Saints better lock in the Poo, Windhager, Owen etc

Great question.
Tassie born and breed. Die hard saints fan.
Will remain a die hard saints fan.
Will closely follow the progression of a Tassie side but they will never be my number 1 team.

LOLZ James Sicily.... Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Should just move the suns ffs.

They would actually thrive.

And you just know they are going to off mitch windy king and Pou millions

Suns / Gold Coast are a massive growth area. Half of the residents in Gold Coast are Melbourne expats. Don't know why so many people are trying to lump Tasmania with a second rate side like the Suns or Norf.

You don't need to worry about the Tasmanian team, they will generate more than enough revenue for the AFL and will be successful before the Suns or Norf are.

The new stadium looks spectacular, right in the middle of Hobart. Will be a great experience for visiting teams and fans.

For Launceston residents, some of their home games will be played at uTas stadium ... so I think it will unify the state football wise.

Just hope we are not at the bottom end of the ladder when they get all their huge draft concessions.

Premier has already declared Tasmania won't be taking a relocated team under any circumstances.

Its going to be their own side....

South Australia were marketing to have a third side over the Gather round, so its going to get to 20 teams quicker than anyone expects.

Nightmare.

By the way, I wasn't suggesting lumping Tassie with the suns.

I was suggesting just get rid of the Suns completely and give the license to Tassie to start a new team.

Personally looking forward to Tassie getting a team and hope we get plenty away games there, it's a great place to visit and Saints playing there gives us a good excuse to head over.

Probably an unpopular opinion, and ill caveat it by saying i actually love Tassie as a 36 year old man but...

Sicily is right, what 18-25 year old making good coin would wanna go live in Hobart.

Id love for Tassie to get a team and see them do well, its footy heartland and a beautiful state but its not exactly appealing for a footballer.

Was going to say the same thing, the response to Siciliy of "let me show you round our boring island" is overly defensive, obviously they are talking about different activities.

Completely disagree, Sicily comments were so wrong especially when the state had given his club millions of dollars in revenue. Also being comments from the clubs captain, then its no wonder they are last on the ladder.... but hey he likes to play golf in Tasmania.

If you are taking that kind of angle in your argument, then why does no-one want to play for the Gold Coast.

Imagine the opportunities that living on the Gold Coast would have for an 18-25 year old making good coin....

Don't really get the no young footballer wants to live in Hobart angle. They won't have too much time on their hands. They're meant to be elite, professional athletes. The only way they'd have time to hit the town and do coke every night is if they play for Collingwood.

It's weird. Geelong is almost labelled as being unfair when it comes to the way their town attracts footy players, but Tasmania will somehow struggle? Could see the prospect of playing footy in Tassie to be a great one for a number of players.

The amount of free time they have away from the club is silly. I think they only are required at the club a maximum of 24 hours correct me if im wrong

Geelong is a bit different though. They currently have 19 on their list who played for either Geelong or North Ballarat in the under 18s. Almost half their players. Tassie would struggle to get 10 good ones from their entire state.

Currently on AFL lists who played Tassie under 18s:

Jack Riewoldt
Jeremy Howe
Liam Jones
Andrew Phillips
Ben Brown
Brody Mihocek
Robbie Fox
Jimmy Webster
Toby Nankervis
Alex Pearce
Jake Kolodjashnij
Ryan Gardner
Chayce Jones
Tarryn Thomas
Sam Banks
Cameron Owen
Tom McCallum
Lachie Cowan
Seth Campbell

Some good players there but only 19 total in the whole AFL, and the last 5 of those have barely played senior footy yet.

I'm a bit worried about this. I suspect Tassie ends up like Gold Coast and GWS. Yes, it's "football heartland" but it's also small.

Tasmania will have 1 team for 541k = 541k per team
Victoria has 10 teams for 6.7m = 670k per team
SA has 2 teams for 1.7m = 850k per team
WA has 2 teams for 2.7m = 1.35m per team
Qld has 2 teams for 5.2m = 2.6m per team
NSW has 2 teams for 8.2m = 4.1m per team

So they'll comfortably have fewer people in the local area for that team than anywhere else including Vic which often feels over-saturated. That means fewer local players coming home, and fewer dollars for sponsorship.

I really want them to succeed, I suspect they become my second team as soon as they enter. But recent history of new clubs doesn't give me much hope.

Just a particularly dumb thing to say in public. He must realise that's club is sponsored by them.

Have more downtime than you would think, but you forget and important one, the women. Can't have the girls you are seeing being 1-2 degrees of separation apart ;), or take them to all the same places. The big party goers will all think they are going to bag a model, gotta work on those statistical probabilities of where they find one.

I mean Siciliy is wrong for saying it but doesnt mean he may not be right, squad of 40ish players, say only 5 want all that stuff it could be devastating if a couple are big name players

Cause the Gold Coast is also a shithole. I mean their issue is a lot less with getting players up there and way more with keeping them past 25ish.

In any event I’m not talking about how it was dumb as a captain to a team with a Tassie sponsorship, just noting that I don’t know too many young guys keen to head down to Mona and Dark Mofo for a boys weekend.

Really appreciate the effort you went into with this and I certainly learnt a lot from this post.

What I think may give Tasmania the edge over its lower population base is the fact its a single team from an AFL loving state. The media and television rights will have a field day every weekend with Sydney vs Tasmania, West Coast vs Tasmania, Adelaide vs Tasmania.... certainly has a better opportunity for high viewership and advertising dollars than .... Greater Western Sydney or Gold Coast or even Freemantle

Yeah acknowledge that Tassie may not be the mecca for young blokes, my 15 year reckons he is out of here as soon as possible, I took off overseas when I was a youngun and lived OS for years and my daughter is at Uni at the black skivvy wearing capital.

Have been a lot of defensive responses to an innocuous comment from a captain of a team who has received millions after millions from Tas - just dumb,
but I am not going to add to them.

Damn my home state will be getting it's own state...pleased, it has grown up a fair bit over the last 10 -20 years and Dark Mofo etc is part of it....place to be proud of. Even if I have a scar on my shoulder

I'm off to WA next week for some work, I know I will hear a shit load about the 'Eastern States' who do not give a shit about WA. It happens everywhere.

For complete clarity here, I love Tassie. As a whisky man it’s an Aussie mecca, Salamanca is awesome, it has some of australias best bushwalks and scenery and is an arts and food hub.

Also Sicily is an idiot, to go with the hawks proud tradition of making their dumbest blokes captains, just saying, he’s not wrong here.

If you run into a bald middle aged topless man with jeans on and soft white creamy milky hands it's best to avoid at all costs.

Enjoy!
