When smothering a ball you want to be in line of it and creating a wide and big area with which to smother the thing. Tucking and turning is the antithesis of a smothering action.

Won't get cited though, it's the AFL they have a narrative to push.

nearly everyone who tries to smother or stop a ball ends up tucking and turning away from it, it's just less obvious because they're not jumping into the air to do so.
