It looked for a minute like GWS, might have picks 4, 5 and 8 or something like that.

Now it is looking like 9 and 12. And with the dillution of the draft by McKay compo and the GC academy those picks could be picks 13 and 16.

Nowhere near enough to trade for Reid.
Reid will end up at Melb

They’ll sell the farm with all the picks they’ve got

I'm going to call it now and if I'm wrong, so be it.

Unless something significant happens to shake the top end, I'd suggest it's basically a formality at this stage that we'll go with Mckercher + Watson.
100% would be happy with this … speed , skill and athleticism in abundance with these two and something we definitely need .

I still think we need to address our backline though , my question is should we consider trading next years 1st to get in O’Sullivan if the opportunity presents itself ?

A haul of Watson , Mckercher , O’Sullivan and Saunders + whoever slides to the Port pick would be some draft .

How do we do that? Pick 2 & 3 only gives is 2 of those - Watson, McKercher & O’Sullivan.

2- Watson
3- Mckercher
5-6 - O’Sullivan in a trade for our future 1st rd pick
We are almost certainly to be given academy rights to Saunders . Plus the Port pick that we hold .

I need to be sold on Watson. I don't know why. It just doesn't fit with what you'd expect out of a very high pick. If we get Sanders as a pre-listed player, and we get McKay compensation at 3, then I find it hard to go past

2 McKercher
3 O'Sullivan
17 Wilson/Freijah/Philactides/Lual
PL Sanders
I would add Schoenmaker and Callinan with some later picks (NGA).

Im not sold on Watson purely based on the last small we drafted. I’m too scarred from Mahony.

Watson is nothing like Mahony lol. That’s outrageous they are even in the same category.

Wizard is a freak of a talent
I was taking the piss, I was taking the piss..

There are too many current possibilities that make a small forward as a top 3 pick not worth it imo. What happens if Ford or Cooper goes forward?
What about Hansen Jnr?
One young small forward isn’t going to fix our immediate needs which is KPD stability and better midfield clearances.

But on a seperate note. Other than a small forward and a KPD, what I have found interesting is that while we are in a dire need of a key back - if I recall Bard really tried to plug that gap via Durdin, EVW and Neilson if you add McKay to that. All will have been gone. We can’t develop small forwards or key backs. Just slow half flankers.

Then add a Haynes salary dump from GWS and hope that Caddy drops to there.

IN - McKercher, Watson, O'Sullivan, Sanders, Caddy, Brayden George, Callinan, Schoenmaker

If all falls into place with Sanders, Picks 2 and 3 I think we’ll have to look at filling needs with one of our first two picks.

Id be happy with either of these options:
1. McKercher, Watson, Sanders
2. McKercher, O’Sullivan/Curtin, Sanders

Option 1: Watson provides us with a dangerous goal kicking small forward who creates chances. We are building a nice forwardline and I think he will bring guys like Stephenson, Curtis, Zurhaar, B.George, Larkey, Comben etc into the game. The best team in the competition right now is showing us you don’t need a dominant tall to be successful.

Option 2: O’Sullivan or Curtin fill a gaping hole in defence for us. Hopefully they can lock up that key defensive post and we can build a defence around them.

McKercher and Sanders will bolster our midfield stocks. Despite popular opinion I do not believe we currently have the quality and balance of midfield needed to challenge the best sides.

If we managed to get Watson & McKercher on top of Sanders that is an astronomical injection of talent.
Is next year's draft midfield heavy?
And, if so, would you trade our F1 to get a KPD like O'Sullivan a year early, who can get some run in Logue's absence?

It doesn't feel like a North move, though, so I wouldn't expect it.

In the event that we did get Sanders (pre-list), McKercher Pick 2 and Watson Pick 3. That would just about sort our midfield and small/mid forward depth.

With the rest of the draft you’d have to think we’d be aiming to get in some outside runners (either specialist wingman or halfbacks) and key position players.

There will be plenty of strong runners and play generating half backs available at the Port Pick but the vast majority of the high end key position players will be off the board (Curtin, O’Sullivan, O. Murphy, Caddy ect). Unless we are going to go with Archer Reid or the undersized Logan Morris, I think in this scenario we’d have to pick the best outside runner available out of; Joel Freijah, Clay Hall, Riley Hardeman, Nathan Philactides, Caleb Windsor and Luamon Lual.

With our last picks, you’d think would have to be aimed at adding some developing talls to the list.

My biggest concern with going with Watson/McKercher at 2/3 is that we are going to heavy in the midfield during this build. Ideally I’d swap out McKercher for either Curtin or O’Sullivan. The main reason being is that the 2024 draft at this early stage looks absolutely stacked with genuine classy midfielders, so we can add more of them at a later stage.

I expect our F1 to be a top 5 pick, unless we got a bounty I wouldn’t be trading it.

Next years draft looks absolutely stacked with mids.

If someone gave us a top 10 pick for our first next year I'd 100% do it.
Can always trade back into the first round next year and we might find ourselves with some draft capital if some of our younger guys remain uncontracted.
Imagine we end up with picks 2,3, 7-9 and 16 plus sanders this year. That's the making of a super team right there.
Let alone our other picks/players we might acquire.

I would too. GWS might be a candidate with their first pick given their second follows 3 picks after.

Very nervous on using a top 5 premium pick on a bloke who is 170cm. Love the Wizard, has dominated the under age comps for years just not sure if he will be able to keep it up against men.
