I think that ship has well and truly sailed. Do we want to be carrying that contract in 3 years, even if we front end it some?
Not as Kelly's age, has 5 years to run on contract and where we are positioned on the ladder (stifle development of the youngsters?), it would be a useless deal unless the Giants have salary cap issues and you structured it like a Treloar-like deal?
Don't see them doing Bowes-style salary dump trade which you would be mad to pick up even for their (at the moment) picks 4 & 5! But if it was for Lachie Whitfield, l think that is a different conversation.....

Kelly has 6 years(not 5) after this year still to go.
Whitfield has 4 more after this year.
Coniglio and Toby have 3 more after this year.
Haynes has one more after this year.
They got Tom Green on deal to end of 2027.

All supposedly in the million $ range, with Haynes being on reportedly $800k+.

With Ash and Himmelberg out of contract this year a Bowes type dump could be the only way out. Unless, the AFL allows clubs to buy them cap space.

Our ability to front load any deal makes it appealing for us.

There's very few elite small forwards in the comp (Cameron, Greene, Papley, Kozzie, Rankine). Grab one when you have the chance. Chips in Watson.
Yep the Tip Rat's not only win games off their own boot, they also make opposition clubs hate you.

If this kid is so highly rated at only Jockey height then he must be something very special.

I'm in!

Elite small forwards are pretty much what the elite FF's were in the 80's imo, in terms of value to a side.

IT's not the volume of goals.

But in the lower scoring nature of the modern era, it's very easy to shut out key forwards, intercept defenders are some of the most damaging players in the game, which all feed off long bombs to key forwards.

Elite small forwards are much much harder to lock down than key forwards, can kick goals in highly contested and low scoring games, they pressure and add to the defensive side much more than key forward does etc. and are just as hard to defend deep forward than a elite key forward.

This is the frustrating part of the salary data not being known. If we can structure Kelly's contract to avoid issues in the future then I would take him on for the right picks.

The oppurtunity to draft Watson and then load up with size with 2 to 3 more first round picks would be huge.

If we end up getting compo because McKay leaves then we could have 3 top 6 picks. Bring in Watson, Curtin and another KPP.

Solve our KPP depth issues for the next 10 years in one draft.

This bloke pls. Kelly had his chance(s).
Be very interesting what GWS do this year,,,,,paid big dollars to plenty of guys, who claim to have stayed for a tilt at a flag, only for other key ingredients to leave none more important that Cameron. They do a good job of regenerating mids through the draft, but now investing in the draft in talls like Cadman going to take time to come on, where does that leave the mid to late 20's players on big dough? Daresay Taranto and Hopper leaving eased that burden a bit, only to need to pay more to guys like Green. Can't help but think their flag tilt went out the door with Cameron.

Absolutely it did.. they're in no-mans land.

Fortunately for them, the've made some pretty smart list management deals since.

They got a decent deal for Cameron and their deals for Hopper and Taranto are excellent.

They can't help the player retention, but they are limiting the damage.
It’s like the initial prediction of never ending top ten picks came true, but not the flags at the same time. 2016 was a sliding doors moment in my humble opinion

Anyone ITK with the draft expecting Caddy to be available at Port's pick? I know a lot still to play out with the carnival etc. but he's almost perfect to complete our forward line (praying Comben can be at least 150 game player)

I think it’ll be interesting watching us, gws and the eagles in upcoming drafts.
It was basically draft tampering what happened, they all knew what they wanted and worked in unison to make it happen.
all three teams come end of year will pretty much cover most of the draft capital at the pointy end again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something similar happen again.

They never got their list profile right from the very start. Even when Cameron was there, they had 69 other tall forwards so at one stage he was pushed up to a wing and couldn't get a kick. Now all those tall forwards have left and they are drafting new ones.

I think they got their list right, I think they stuck it out with Leon Cameron for too long, after Sheedy that job should’ve always gone to Mark Williams, I shutter to think what Mark could’ve done with that list too.
The biggest single mistake they made was reappoint Sheedy in 2013 and dump Mark.

For them, for us, for footscray...

The fact that we backed in Charlie Comben rather than draft Logan McDonald or Aaron Cadman is maybe a hint that we might also reach a point where we are pretty happy with our midfield stocks too, and rather than sell the farm for Harley Reid, we might settle in and take the elite small forward that we really need.
