I am really enjoying getting the training reports. Well done to all the guys (and gals?) doing that. Please keep it going. I am heartened by the organisation and detail that we are now going through. And the focus.

Many is a time last season that I thought we were a rabble. Just running around with seemingly a lot of effort but little method or structure. So frustrating to watch.

My mind went back to a VFL game I watched at Punt Road against Richmond before Covid. I have mentioned it on here before. Richmond were out warming up with the coaches on each station going through various drills. Very slick.

We wandered out like a pub team….brown’s cows….whatever you want to call it. No wonder we got flogged. I thought then that the standards weren’t just low. They were non-existent. I didn’t see any of our coaches on the ground. Ok. It was a VFL game. But plenty of listed players in there.

It was indicative of what we had become. I reckon it is a long way back. We probably got better under Ratten, but still far short. And now it is a medium long term project to get skills and system up. You have to start somewhere.

I am always optimistic but I still see us struggling this year. Improving, but not quite there. All these injuries are a worry, but it is what it is. I am just looking for improvements. More would be fantastic, but I reckon we are 2/3 years from being a far better team.

Would love to be wrong.

My not so in depth report:

I'd be shocked if Phillipou didn't debut round 1. He looks ready made.

Wood in the midfield group for parts. Looked decent.

Coff while he wasn't involved a whole lot. The size of him. Jeeeeeeesus.

Was impressed with Rowan. Covered the ground well in the Match Sim

The boy must have hit the post 100 times.

That's all I really noticed. I'm not very observant but the usual things we've heard is true. Very vocal. Lenny, BJ and Harvs controlling the training while RTB was more casual. Went to one session last year and the professionalism is up tenfold.

It's a process, and you can't take a whole lot out of training but we are on the right track.

Did Coff train or did he just do laps?

I hope his legs don't break.
Walking on the moon.

Fingers crossed

He was training on the oval at the back with Gresh, Battle, Jones, Billings and Oscar when I left. BJ had them doing non-contact drills. All of them were moving well.
The non contact group aka recovering and still not in full training.

List is getting very long.

Was just trying to point out that he was doing more than just running laps. Plenty of stop/start stuff and lateral movement inolved which is a step forward from what I've seen from him recently. They all looked pretty close to returning. Who else is missing? King, Hayes, Campbell, Hotton and Keeler by my reckoning. Who knows what's happened to Hayes and King is a huge out but the rest of them don't matter much. Just need that group that was training with BJ out the back today to get back sooner rather than later. Theyt were all running flat out.
Steele trained full contact. DMAC same.

I wonder if Misson/Lyon is just more conservative than most and that a lot of these guys who are on restricted programs would have been training normally under the old guard? Complete speculation, but Lyon did say recently that he absolutely hates preseason contact injuries.
I thought along the same lines this morning while watching training. Whilst there are a few not actually in the training group players like Coff actually look very fit and was wondering whether they were just trying to get miles into their legs
