Training 2023 Pre Season

It wont matter what coach we have if we cant get our best 22 on the park for the majority of the year.

Eyre isnt on the list, but surely the club has to start looking at their training loads and injuries? The way its going we will start the season with 30 players to select from.

I understand a number of players are recovering from past season injuries, but for this time of year we just have far too many players not in full training.

Its seriously looking like their loads were increased too much too soon???

Yeah - SOS is so much better than Gags, that's why they employed him to do only half of the job that Gags was previously doing and with less direct decision making responsibility.
And for all the bagging of Trout, don’t we now have 3 guys doing the job/s he was doing pretty much by himself, prior to getting the flick?

I was reported at the time he was sacked that it was highly unusual that someone at an AFL club would be responsible for both the drafting and list management, so at the time we had him doing the job of two men, and now it looks like he was doing the jobs now filled by Allen, SOS and Toce!

And to be honest, the only real issue he had with drafting was that he didn’t get that one or two “superstars” that you really need to go all the way.

Outside of that he generally got relatively good value out of his picks, and he also managed to find a couple of gems in the rookie draft, in Sincs and Marshall.

Fair point, i was more trying to ascertain where all this "noise" about the saints needing to show substantial improvement THIS YEAR had come from.

Ive seen it in a few spot on BF and in the media and it was just perplexing to me, i certainly dont expect us to improve substantially (i could even see a slight regression if we have gutted the existing gameplan).
I'm making all the noise. I'm the vuvuzela of his forum. Finals or bust. Lyon on thin ice.

Who cares what other club supporters think? This year doesn’t need to be an improvement ladder wise, I do want to see an improvement in skills and effort but if it takes a year for the game plan to stick, that’s okay with me.

I’ve been viewing this year as the start of a rebuild more or less. Back at square one and that’s a good thing.

Not a rebuild on field though, a rebuild of the footy department and the operation of the club. Up until now we've been throwing good produce into a pot and hoping it will turn into a meal. We've gone a grabbed a team of chefs now.

i think that was becuase of lovett, and scandals. I think the club go so worried about it all that they demanded choir boys, and thats what we got. they just probably let it go on too long without thinking too much.
There’s a huge difference between sexual assault or normal assault and just cocky players though. Like cocky players might be a bit annoying but doesn’t mean they’re going to go commit crimes cause they think they’re a decent player

As a serious question to all the saints fans here... Are our expectations actually high for 2023?

To me this is a consolidation season, finishing 6th to 8th would be a huge bonus but the point is for Ross and co to settle a structure and gameplan and figure out who on our list is gonna deliver it.

I hate riting a year off before it starts but surely were not actually expecting 23 to be a bounce back year?
Expecting to make the 8 by just scraping in. All hope gone but some mathematical equations go our way and we make it in with a final round loss but another team gets belted by some astronomical margin.

Nothing to lose since we didn’t expect to make it off a mediocre season but making the 8 papers over the cracks and we’re living high over the off season!

I always enjoy a gringo metaphor and this one is right up there

Plenty were set up to fail. Lack of spending on the footy department definitely contributed to a lot of areas performing way below standard. I think he had Libba as his Toce when he took over list management. 2 good players from the rookie list in a long tenure was below standard to me but they probably didn't give him scouts and other support to help. He was a guy who was shoved into the job from being an assistant coach and left unaided by the club. They neglected everything in the footy department, probably to pay down debt but austerity is one of the quickest ways to send your self irrelevant.

Let the players manage their own strength and conditioning! Windy as S&C director
The player with the most muscles can take training.

Absolute clown show down at Linton St unfortunately

King coffield Keeler Hayes and Allison injuries don’t have a lot to do with training loads.

Billings Gresham Jones Steele are all on the comeback trail from things not relating to RTB

Eyre and Campbell could have happened at any time.

Yeah, seems like good old fashioned St Kilda bad luck. Better to knock them out now than during the season.

Like when the pe teacher needed to have a smoke just point to the biggest kid and tell them to lead laps
Have a smoke and check out all the year 12 girls in the class.

Very similar to Lyon, loitering out the back sniffing around. Alarming stuff. Is his mind on the task at hand? I think not.

I reckon it would be a challenge, even for gringo2011 , to get him to explore the difference between an analogy and a metaphor, in metaphorical terms.

Or spoonerisms and malapropisms. I'm like a beat poet, mixing metaphors and analogies with allegories and parables. It all makes sense to me.

What trade?

It was a draft pick.

Probably get the very basics of list management right before you accuse me of making stuff up.

Did it really haunt you when Petracca did his knee in 2015 & Paddy was showing signs of what he is now producing on a weekly basis?

Now that sounds like a made up 'fact'.

paddy mccartin vs petracca is not an argument i'd be enterring. you're gonna lose that one everyday of the week.

people aren't interested in an ACL in 2015. they're after the body of work.

mccartin is miles off petracca.

I beg to differ they have everything to do with training loads and the type of training they are doing.

We havent played a game yet and have 1/3 of the list on the side lines? That smells poor management, the bad luck Saints doesnt wash in a professional environment.

I understand Lyon was eager to lift the training regime standards, but as far as conditioning readiness goes it looks like they have gone far too early!

this is not entirely true. he had a team of recruiters underneath him. ameet bains was the list manager. trout was the head recruiter. those two were alone at the U18 games i saw here in WA during 2014. this changed in 2015 and i saw about 5 saints guys at the U18 games here in WA.

i watched ameet in 2014 and he was taking notes but also looking around the ground alot. for example he gave me a smile cause my kids were in saints gear. problem was i was walking behind him and the ground was in front of him. trout looked very intense.

but trout was around a lot longer and ended up promoted into a role he should never have been put in. list management. from the horses mouth trout offered overs to our existing players and unders to those we wanted to get in. we didnt prioritise skills high enough.

he just sounded terrible in the higher list management role. more suited to recruitment. but the recruitment calls he made he blew some very good shots at it.

but we've had some massive holes in all areas of the club. so take a swipe at em and you'll hit and be right. just a very poorly run club, covered up by greater support by those around us. AFL has improved equalisation measures $$$ wise and had a massive 180 turn away form saddling clubs with debt. the local and state governments had to address a falling down eye sore of Moorabbin.

now that moorabbin is sorted and equalisation has settled, there's no hiding. things are stabilising, so any growth from here will have to be from our own hard work.
