You’d have to think he’s in for Cox for round 1. Cox has missed a lot of match sim time and no-one walks into an AFL side underdone any more. Might have to bide some time at Peel as a cautionary tale.
If Cox plays a scratchie, which he apparently will, I cant see how he would start at Peel. Round 1 is still a month away which is more than enough time to catch up enough

Doesn’t sound like Longmuir is super happy about Coxy letting his knee get infected. The comment at the press he said “could have been avoided”. Code language for Cox was a silly boy and didn’t look after his graze.

Ole mate Cornes has gone off on a tangent and over reacted. No big issue with skateboarding or surfing etc.

Anyway all things aside Cox is near on all-Australian and our key backline player. Can’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be 100% fit. He has been running at training and even if for some unforeseen reason he doesn’t get a game in he will be selected. Hamling will have to bide his time.

NOD is a bit different. He needs to get some game time and fitness up before round 1. At this stage he would be a little more doubtful, especially if the likes of Henry, Johnson and Hughes are cherry ripe and in form.

Yeah agree 100%. NODs spot sounds close to up for grabs at the moment

I'm excited about the prospect of having multiple wing options as promising as NOD, tbh.
So, without wanting to catastrophise, I think the wing position might be a big issue for us this year. I’ve rewatched a lot of last years wins and Acres was prominent in most. I feel like the brief is: big bodied kid who can run all day, impact multiple contests at both ends, mark, kick long, kick goals. No one is screaming out as an ideal candidate to me at this stage.

Definitely feels risky but no way we lowball Blake like that if we thought it would derail the whole season. Especially since its not like Blake is a total campaigner like other players we've let go.

Acres is going to be a bigger loss then most posters realise.
Hardly any big bodied depth. Aish is solid, Henry concerns me the most. Don’t understand why Clark isn’t being trained on the wing. Perfect candidate. Fast, big tank, strong.

Acres size loss is countered by losing his terrible i50 entries.

Acres came off a career best year. The two seasons previous were just average. He has also suffered injuries in each of his years and back at the saints. He tends to kick long i50 and very rarely lowers the eyes. It is this aspect which has seen the club willing to lose him. He will be a loss with his run and intercepts but his regular bombs i50 when better options are available won’t be missed and will bring a different dimension to our team forward entries/connection in his absence.

Last night I went back and did something I never thought I’d do - watch the full replay of our last match in 2022.

It was a comprehensive loss with a real feel of boys up against men. Nobody went real well - even all our young guns. That said Acres was one of our better performers. I started trying to visualise how our new, hyped up 2023 version of Henry would go in his place - but the horror of that prospect forced me to think other thoughts. In short we’re going to miss Acres more than I originally thought (flour bag I50 delivery and all), especially when the whips are cracking.

Watching that game served a useful purpose in bringing a bit of balance to the pre season hype we’re all revelling in. Expectations are now suitably lowered.

Just GO Freo already.

Your a stronger man than me, I was live at the ground and still haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the replay, which I always usually do (even with losses) because there’s so much of the inside game you miss when at the ground.

i rewatched that game too but to be honest wasnt too horrified by it. I think it should also be remembered that we had been way down against the Bulldogs (probably because most had never played in a final before) and pulled a massive effort to come back from that which probably sapped a big amount of energy. Avoiding those situations should be the aim this year.

Exactly this. One week earlier a bunch of kids had made finals history and then had nothing left in the tank. Acres still had some petrol in his but it doesn't mean we'll miss his rainmakers.
