Honestly I don't think they'll be too terrible this year.

Their supporters are delusional thinking their youth doesn't need 2-3 more drafts and 4-5 more years to be a top four side imo. But their 30+ year olds when fully fit should make them competitive enough.

Happy just to get the four points as much as possible. The derbies are no much more than two wins imo. Only difference is it's very difficult to put up with their ****wit supporters once a year (attending an away derby would be too much for me).
is there any chance their perennially injured and unfit veterans magically come good this season though?

its mad though how delusional and optimistic their fans are, genuinely thinking they have a chance of making finals

like dom sheed and campbell chesser are two of the best players to ever play the game lmao

I'm hoping they do improve up to around 12-15 or so. It'll be on the back of older guys who won't be any good for them in the future so it'll be temporary. Mostly it'll slightly diminish their draft hand and therefore their chances of getting the immediate help they'll need as the older guys age out.

If we make top four on our draw then we deserve to be there and a good chance. If you’re relying on an “easy fixture” to get there you won’t get past the prelim as any decent clubs (you only played once) will destroy you. I’d rather play 3times on the MCG against hard teams to get experience them dodge them and end up in Darwin, Gold Coast and Tasmania. The Big difficult clubs play at the MCG, bar the Lions. Embrace it. Back us.

Nah, I'd rather see them get three consecutive spoons and watch the public and media turn on them.

Yes. Playing GWS twice is not a great example of the luck of the draw. We may be marginally more difficult than we should be, but it remains astonishing that Carlton's draw can be so out of kilter.

Injury management, squad depth and development, and balancing the midfield to forward equation will all play a part in our 2023 journey before the draw becomes a factor. Fyfe being fit and healthy may be more significant. Perhaps Taberner.

Carlton are entitled to a good fixture because................they are Carlton!

They will have a heap of Friday night games and the AVFL will be hoping this is the year they don't s**t the bed and miss the finals again. The rest of us will be hoping like hell they do their normal thing and crash out.

I thought the return to training was this Wednesday (brace yourself for the news being all over the weagles tonight).
There is nothing of the club website relating to training yet, anyone know if it is Wed and if so Cockburn?

The offices are closed until Thursday, and I'm going to assume that the players don't get back until then either, as the last day of training last year was Wed 21st. Three weeks off = Thurs 12th return.

Eagles media already panicking about Tom Barrass mysteriously having his arm in a cast today. I wonder what our midsummer injury surprise will be?

Tbh I think they're still not a bottom six with most of their 30+ brigade playing at 80-odd%.

Bit like Freo from 2017-2019 imo. We were top eight or very damn close halfway through each season then we were dialogical after that. Our players probably weren't as old though tbh.

Injuries and players playing injured because we barely had anyone left was a huge reason why there was such a drop off in season.

What really sucks is their list of players between 23-28. I'd take Barrass, Allen and Ryan but probably not anyone else. Think they're getting very excited about youngsters that look okay at best and/or haven't played yet too.

Seems a lot like us going into 2017 imo. Almost none of the kids we thought were good are still on the list. Those that are good hadn't played

Carlton = no intestinal fortitude.

I reckon they have the old 80’s mentality, of a chequebook will solve all their problems.

If the Wet Toast 30+ brigade keep them from the bottom six next year, I'll be very pleased....that they'll be delaying their return to the top with a lesser pick....

All good points. Makes perfect sense.

I wouldn't want to invest any more into our defense, so that's a nix to Barrass.

I like Allen but, it's complicated. He's not replacing Jackson, and I'm not actually sure he's a forward.

Big no to Ryan. Displays some very questionable characteristics. When 'on' he's supreme though.

They grabbed some handy types in the draft though.

According to this article Liam Serong and Stubbs will continue as train on players into the new year. Also interesting is that the club had asked the AFL for special permission to add Jed Hagan as a third play on.

"Fremantle had also shown a bit of interest in tough East Fremantle utility Jed Hagan, asking the AFL for special permission to get him on as a third SSP train-on

Hagan has since joined Port Adelaide’s SANFL side after his shock draft snubbing".
Walls seems to have an eye for finding talent that gets missed.

Darling would have been behind Pavlich in how many goals he’s kicked.
Ryan kicked 19 goals in 22, enough said.
Allen has huge shoes to fill, but has shown potential.
Spine still looks ok, NN only plays 60 minutes.
To say they need Chesser, Culley, O’ Neil, Gibney, Hewitt, Hough to fire
at their age is a bridge too far.
Jury is out on the old stagers.

If you'd go after Darling and Ryan I say good luck to you, but for me it would set us back significantly.

Darling is 30+ and I did say those between 23 and 28.

I’d take some of their 30+ players for sure but there’s too many of them and a lot are playing like shadows of their former selves.

I’d obviously take some of their best players under 23 for our list but not sure how many of them would actually be best 22. Maybe they’d be close.

I stick by the three I mentioned between 23 and 28. If people want to say we have good players that play their positions and/or cite off field problems fair enough but I was only really considering on field performance tbh.

I know Pearce and Cox are good but Barrass would be our best KPD.

Allen would be our best KPF.

Ryan would in theory be our best small forward but I’m not sure he’d last too long at Freo where his off field problems would get exposed for what they truly are (if not worse) by the Eagles media. In theory he’s a pretty good player though.

Sheed might be under 28 - I’d probably take him ahead of JOM tbh.

There’s no one else I’d even be close to taking that’s aged between 23 and 28.

Sheed in front of JOM ?.

All my Eagles mates reckon that Sheed has been “coasting” for the last couple of seasons. More of a plodder these days.

JOM has a bit to prove ( post injury ), but to me, he has a bit of hurt factor.
