Has anyone been watching Koltyn Tholstrup? Any takes on him so far?
My take:

Positives:
General good skills and reliable kick on a goal
Tackles hard (needs to be a little careful to not have good opposition turn it into an in the back free kick)
Big body
Fast on a lead
good hands
Pretty good in the air

Areas to work on on:
Fitness - endurance. Was planning to play more midfield for Subiaco and not sure he really go there this season. Even if he is a pure forward he will need to be able to go a lot longer than he currently can.
Agility - good on a lead or straight tackling but again as a forward probably needs to improve this to have more strings to the bow.

Awesome writeup, thanks!

So who could we have grabbed at pick 4?

This sucks and as much as I like Jackson he's not worth pick 4 13 and a second rounder.

He would have gone to Freo regardless or maybe west coast but we handed Melbourne a gold mine

Does it really matter though? Jackson was always going to cost two firsts. Do you think we would let someone like Serong or Amiss go for any less even if they was OOC? Whether it's pick 4 or pick 18 we were never going to have access to a first round pick this year. Nothing has changed in terms of who's coming into our team though, our first player was always going to be taken at 21.

If Jackson suddenly decided that he had enough and wanted to go back to melbourne. would you accept pick 4 and Matthew Jefferson?

I think the first four picks for mine would be Walters (bid matched - Gold Coast), Reid (Eagles), Duursma (North), McKersher (Hawks).

That would probably have left us with Curtin (Intercept Tall Defender / CHB) or Nate Caddy (Tall Medium Forward/ Midfielder with previous broken leg) or Watson (Very small Forward).

It does matter

Does it matter to west coast that Tim Kelly wasn't worth what they paid for him? Absolutely, part of a number of reasons why they suck

We handed over a young gun in Cerra for pick 6. He is playing better than Jackson and I don't care if Jackson is unique. Would a club such as Melbourne who was interested in Cerra give us pick 5 13 and a second rounder? Nope not a chance. They wouldn't for Jackson either. Only we would pay the farm. Never learn do we

Yes a lot of talent to choose from.

We could have brought in 3 players instead of 1 who is on 900k a year.

While we are paying Fyfe all this money to watch on fir another two years. He doesn't even have to play.

So jamming up our salary cap and drsft picks.

We never learn from these quick fixes. Look at Hogan and Lobb.

Jackson is not on Cerra level. One is a run of the mill midfielder. The other is Ruck/Fwd/Mid hybrid who had just won the rising star. It really doesn't matter that Cerra is better than Jackson. He has two years on him and plays a much easier role. Jackson is still 21.

Jackson should be compared to what we would expect from an OOC Serong (also rising star winner) or Amiss (key posisition player who plays well above expected level for his age). No way we would accept any less than two firsts.

And Kelly situation at west coast is completely different. They had no good young talent. Meanwhile all of our talent is young. We took 7 first round picks in the 3 years before Jackson. Pick 4 is not going to come in and be the difference between us playing finals or not. Jackson would be.

We never should’ve excepted what we did for Cerra but that’s another matter altogether tbh.

But it is the matter

We pay a lot for players to come to us yet don't expect the same in return

if we had a high enough pick to take Jackson in the National draft, then that’s all we would have paid for him. Carlton would’ve used 6 on Cerra in the ND if we didn’t accept their offer. We traded for Jackson in a season where we were good and so held no leverage. They traded for Cerra in a season they were poor and so had all the power. Similar to Langdon and Melb. You can’t compare when it’s completely different situations.

If Cerra has chosen Melb instead, and they were not willing to part with Jackson, then they also would have paid us two firsts for him bc their pick in the teens wouldn’t have been enough.

Either way we got shafted

Cerra hasn't been that good for Carlton. Floated around halfback getting a lot of afl fantasy points but that's about it.

Used that pick 6 on Jye Amiss, blessing in disguise.

Cerra is probably going to win their best and fairest this year. He’s been very good, took a year to find his place in the midfield.

Would I rather have Amiss? absolutely.

Would I rather have Amiss, cap space to take Wil Brodie, trade in pick 21 and recruiting Johnson? You better believe it.

The fact that Amiss and Johnson are 19 and 20 years old, makes it look like Carlton won. Give our kids time to hit 22-23 years old and we are better off.

Yeah he's been good. But you ain't a winning a premiership with Adam Cerra leading your midfield, which he actually is doing for Carlton right now.

Bro just doesn't have that dawg in him, very cookie cutter type midfielder.

Cerra did choose Melbourne and we asked for Jackson in return. Melbourne said no, so he went to the blues. I think that tells you the relative value of both players.

Edit: this is completely the wrong thread for this discussion, let’s get back to who we pick with 21 (26 after academy and F/S picks)

Been a while since I updated my rankings on here...

1. Harley Reid (185cm mid, Vic Country)
2. Jed Walter (195cm forward, Gold Coast)
3. Nick Watson (170cm forward, Vic Metro)
4. Ryley Sanders (186cm mid, Tasmania)
5. Colby McKercher (181cm mid, Tasmania)
6. Darcy Wilson (185cm mid, Vic Country)
7. Joel Freijah (191cm mid, Vic Country)
8. Ethan Read (202cm ruck, Gold Coast)
9. Zane Duursma (189cm mid, Vic Country)
10. Daniel Curtin (195cm defender, WA)

11. Nate Caddy (192cm forward, Vic Metro)
12. Connor O'Sullivan (198cm defender, Vic Country)
13. Ashton Moir (188cm forward, SA)
14. Mitch Edwards (206cm ruck, WA)
15. Riley Hardeman (188cm defender, WA)
16. Angus Hastie (189cm defender, Vic Country)
17. Will Patton (192cm defender, SA)
18. Jake Rogers (171cm mid, Gold Coast)
19. Kolstyn Tholstrup (188cm forward, WA)
20. Jack Delean (181cm forward, SA)

21. Harry DeMattia (184cm mid, Vic Country)
22. Clay Hall (190cm mid, WA)
23. Ollie Murphy (200cm defender, Vic Metro)
24. Jordan Croft (200cm forward, Vic Metro)
25. Will Lorenz (186cm mid, Vic Metro)
26. Will McCabe (197cm defender, SA)
27. James Leake (188cm defender, Tasmania)
28. Koen Sanchez (176cm mid, WA)
29. Luamon Lual (181cm defender, Vic Metro)
30. Lance Collard (180cm forward, WA)

Nothing too out of the ordinary. Edwards and Moir dropping a bit, but nobody really climbed too much. I still rate them both higher than most - I doubt Moir goes top 40 at the moment.

Our first would probably fall around the mark for Tholstrup and Hardeman at the moment, maybe around the start of the ranges for Hall and Sanchez. Outside of WA, Delean could be one we look at. The one I rate much higher than others is Freijah, he could still be on the board too. Depending on what we plan for Young and Chapman in terms of midfield, it could open the door for someone like Hastie too.

Has Moir fallen off a cliff or what in terms of performance this year? You have him at 13 but say the clubs won’t pick him in the top 40?

Maybe 40 was a bit of a stretch, he probably comes into the mix around that 30-40 range.

I personally have him higher because of what he can do, I always rate pure ability but his performances this year don't justify my ranking. He hasn't been at 100% because of a hip complaint, I'll give him that. And he's also been playing deep forward in some pretty bad teams, so it hasn't been easy to get involved.

Imagine if we had a top 5 pick. That McKercher kid goes alright.
