Whatkins won norths vfl b&f the last two years, whilst being the captain.

Frank da tank would never be capable of that
I realise they are different players, but how does Watkins break into a midfield like ours? He would be pure depth and even then I thinik we'd try Bergman or Sinn or Lorenz in the middle if we had significant injuries there.

Oh i thought he was more a fwd-mid, as appose to a predominant midfield player.

if thats the case then i agree, he is as useful as frank.

You can't avoid drafting players because they'll be depth. On a list of 42, there will always be depth players.

Wasn't the biggest complaint about the Magpies (apart from Hartlett's coaching) that we had no midfield depth?

Watkins at worst is a quality state league player who gives us some depth, experience, leadership and will set an example because he will play at 100% every week.

And he's already committed to staying on even if he isn't drafted.

Will we actually take 2 rookies + Benny? Won’t we leave one spot for a train on player?

I'm only guessing but I assume we will leave a spot open so only take 1 rookie. Watkins has said he will be training with Port in the SSP for a spot on the list and if he doesn't get selected will stay and play for the Magpies.

Someone who is more educated than me ...how did we do overall?

FWIW and I feel dirty saying this, I agree with Jon Ralph.

I thought we did really well, getting Whitlock and Berry was beyond unlikely two nights ago. Then Moraes to finish off, and add Benny Barrett as a Cat B. Rocked it hard.

In terms of rookie selections, if Dennis gets to us and we don't pick him then we are being irresponsible about our backline situation. Going all in on Aliir and BZT is reckless imo. One big injury to either of them and our season is over.

If people tell me "we have Esava, Marshall and Finlayson who can go back" as excuses then you're only kidding yourselves. One doesn't know which way is up when he's in defence, one is a hit away from retiring and the other is going through a personal issue and is not fully focused (obviously I don't blame him). We delisted Cluz and KMarshall (the latter of which I don't really care).

If we took KMarshall 2 years ago for his athleticism, we can take Dennis for his actual defensive craft at least as a rookie.

Would also look at 1 of Hargrave, Day-Wicks or Murphy. We cannot use up a position on Watkins who clearly no other recruiter rates in any form and put him on our AFL list
If your comment about not knowing which way is up when in defence, is about Asava, that’s not how the club sees it.

Rat collected B&F votes in 19 games last year! There was a patch where he didn’t and that was when he played forward after the Geelong game.

He collected 5 in the semi-final win against Geelong too. So the club certainly see him as best 22, playing a combination of second ruck and defence.

Depends how high you rate Berry and Whitlock, but we did alright.

On face value we arguably got the best small forward, got a 200cm KPF who was predicted to go a lot higher, and got a draft year slider who was rated an early pick at the start of the season.

We did alright

The proof will be in the pudding in a few years.

S Burgoyne for what was it? Moore and Pittard? looked ok at first too.

You are allowed to have an opinion on face value and available evidence.

That draft was 15 years ago and I don't think it was that good. Both were reaches and positionless utility types.

This looks a much better mix of players.

Berry is a good small forward, I think he'll consistently kick 30 goals a year. I still stick to my point that he isn't a need but don't question the quality of the player.
I personally still see a Kane Farrell type winger when I look at him, who has a little more craft around goals, maybe a better mark. Could easily see Berry slotting into a wing role personally.

I thought Saints had a great draft

But their fans were crying out for midfielders. I'm not commenting on the draft, just their fans' expectations.

Tauru looks an excitement machine, should be great to watch. I would have been happy to draft Travaglia.

I can see why they'd want mids, but their backline is getting on and they just lost Battle and delisted a bunch of younger defenders who didn't work out. Trevaglia, Tauru and Barrat is basically a set and forget backline for their next gen. Carroll and Macrae coming in as experienced mids. They can go early with mids next year.

St Kilda had the best draft outside Eagles for mine.

Eagles absolutely smashed it with their picks - Bo Allan, Jobe Shanahan, Tom Gross and Hamish Davis? Geez Louise.

But Saints coming through with Travaglia, Tauru, Barrat, Boxhall and Dodson is a close second for mine. Best rebounding defender, the athletic phenom, arguably the best key defender, a very solid midfielder to get in the 40s and the best ruck. Can't be unhappy with that.
