List Mgmt. 2024 AFL Draft

You can't avoid drafting players because they'll be depth. On a list of 42, there will always be depth players.

Wasn't the biggest complaint about the Magpies (apart from Hartlett's coaching) that we had no midfield depth?

Watkins at worst is a quality state league player who gives us some depth, experience, leadership and will set an example because he will play at 100% every week.

And he's already committed to staying on even if he isn't drafted.
Love him in our SANFL side, just think we can use the AFL list spot for someone with a higher ceiling, especially when we have other guys like Atkins, McEntee occupying space on it.

But how do you define who has a higher ceiling? Another 17yo who will be pick 100 this year? Sometimes these older guys deserve a chance. Geelong seem to be able to pick off mature agers who can have an impact and we laud them for that.

One of the reasons the crows have a strong sanfl side is they are full of these twilight zone draftees, too good for sanfl, not good enough for AFL that they just hang onto because they drafted them as 'higher ceiling' players.

In the end it's the 42nd spot on the list and I'm not dying in a ditch defending it. I think they'll keep a spot open, have a look at a few players and pick one of them. And it could be a kid who missed drafting this year who impresses.

I still remember when we finished a draft one year then picked Sam Colquhoun the next day because apparently we had forgotten he was available. So anything is possible ;)

St Kilda had the best draft outside Eagles for mine.

Eagles absolutely smashed it with their picks - Bo Allan, Jobe Shanahan, Tom Gross and Hamish Davis? Geez Louise.

But Saints coming through with Travaglia, Tauru, Barrat, Boxhall and Dodson is a close second for mine. Best rebounding defender, the athletic phenom, arguably the best key defender, a very solid midfielder to get in the 40s and the best ruck. Can't be unhappy with that.
St Kilda winning a bunch of dead rubbers late in the year to move their draft picks out beyond the premium midfielders has understandably broken St Kilda supporters

You are allowed to have an opinion on face value and available evidence.

That draft was 15 years ago and I don't think it was that good. Both were reaches and positionless utility types.

This looks a much better mix of players.
At some stage we need to move on from a bad draft.

Sometimes onus has to be placed on the individual also. Nat Fyfe, Dan Houston came from no where to be guns, self discipline and desire can go a long way to achieving success

Putting Cochrane to one side, who are the best players who were overlooked the past couple of nights? Just in case we do something funky in the rookie draft today.

ESPN also liked our draft

Port Adelaide

Players drafted: Joe Berry (15), Jack Whitlock (33), Christian Moraes (38)

Port Adelaide pulled the first live trade of the draft, moving up a spot to grab half forward Joe Berry. The Bushrangers goalkicker models his game on Robbie Gray and boasts similarities in his silky ball use and penchant for standing up in big games.

They were considering Jack Whitlock at 15, and were stunned to see him slide all the way to pick 33 where they snatched him up. He will take time to develop his 200cm frame but presents as a long-term Charlie Dixon replacement leading out of full forward.

Finally, Christian Moraes was another slider they were keen to grab. The Ranges midfielder has played across all three areas of the ground and does not stop running. It means he finds plenty of ball and can kick goals. Benny Barrett will slot onto their rookie list as an NGA small forward.

The Power needed to capitalise on this draft after trading Dan Houston, and they grabbed three high quality prospects with two likely to play AFL football next year.

Grade: A

FWIW and I feel dirty saying this, I agree with Jon Ralph.

I thought we did really well, getting Whitlock and Berry was beyond unlikely two nights ago. Then Moraes to finish off, and add Benny Barrett as a Cat B. Rocked it hard.

Depends how high you rate Berry and Whitlock, but we did alright.

On face value we arguably got the best small forward, got a 200cm KPF who was predicted to go a lot higher, and got a draft year slider who was rated an early pick at the start of the season.

We did alright
Thank you

I would be over the damn moon to grab Clancy Dennis today. Really rate him as a dour key defender who is capable with ball in hand.

Phoenix Hargrave is still there, as well as Archer Day-Wicks.

Yes, Clancy Dennis would be a good get. Did Burmeister miss out? Do you rate him at all? He's probably not what we need.

PHOENIX HARGRAVE (South Adelaide) Midfielder, 182cm

TATE DELMENICO (Woodville-West Torrens/Henley High School) Defender, 190cm

From my top 50:

37 - DAY-WICKS, Archer - Mid/HF
38 - DENNIS, Clancy - KPD
44 - HARGRAVE, Phoenix - Mid
46 - MURPHY, Josh - HF

Xavier Ivisic might go. He's a Karl Amon type. Oliver Warburton and Patrick Retschko maybe as well.

Hargrave wont offer much diff to Jez Mclennan who is trying to earn a spot on our list.

I would have taken Montgomery and delisted Williams, apart from that its slim pickings.

Also, it takes two seconds to find his full identity and the redacted university.

Well done, Saints. You have compounded things.

Also invited to State testing were:

Harrison Ramm height: 201cm
Glenelg tall Harrison Ramm is among the exciting key position players who have emerged to turn this year's crop from a midfield-heavy intake, to a potential super draft. Primarily a key defender, he is also capable of rolling through the ruck with his terrific aerial range and attack on the ball.

Jacob Sheehan height 196cm
South Adelaide Under 18 captain and key defender Jacob Sheean has been a reliable figure for the Panthers across two seasons. He featured in 20 games last year en route to premiership success, before skippering in 10 appearances as a top-ager between his representative commitments, and going on to turn out in South's Reserves side late in the year.

I could see us taking Day-Wicks if he's there, based on athletic potential, aggression and the fact that he'd probably be pretty good mates with Berry and Whitlock sharing a forward line in Vic Country's team.

Does Rome Burgoyne just kick himself for not working hard enough when it mattered this year?

1-2 years ago he was tracking to be “better” than Jase, which now we know would make a very good footballer.

He played solid footy for the Magpies when given the chance but all other reports hint at a lack of intensity.

In Moraes’ highlights from the Metro vs SA game, Burgoyne could be seen in several passages of play trailing behind or looking like he was just not able to keep up.

Must be bloody disappointing for the club, his family and especially him if he isn’t at a draftable level yet.
