AFL drafts are tricky to get right at the best of times. There are so many players who rise and fall based on the final year of U18s. It's the year where players who might have been out of position to facilitate the previous year's draftees move back into their preferred roles, it's the year where a lot of kids show massive amounts of physical development and the others that developed earlier fall back to the pack. Even with the benefit of that last U18 year there are picks which don't turn out right.Speaking of strange stuff, what on earth happened to Will Phillips?
Outstanding player at the Chargers - alongside Rowell and Anderson if you don't mind - and now looking to be delisted by all accounts.
What on earth happened to this former Pick 3 with such a reportedly high ceiling?
I know he had Glandular Fever, but that should be well and truly behind him surely.
The concensus on the Norf board is that he is unmotivated, unfit and really hasn't had a fair shot under Clarkson - not getting a run of games.
That does sound a bit familiar - Clarkson and his favourites - but delisting the guy seems a bit extreme.
That's the word though.
Not suggesting we pick him up, but this seems a stratospheric fall from grace for a guy touted as a genuine star mid at one point.
Thoughts?
Will is a combination of a kid who was very well developed for his age, despite not being super tall, and a kid who missed pretty much that entire final year of U18s due to the pandemic, and in an overall weak draft.
You'd take him for next to nothing but I don't think there's some vast pool of unearthed potential there.
