Greater Western Sydney KPF Jesse Hogan is now leading the Coleman Medal after kicking five goals against Hawthorn today. He's having arguably the best season of his career, living up to his considerable hype and associated expectations. His career was disrupted by injuries early on but he still showed considerable promise. He averaged over 15+ disposals, 6.5 marks, and 2.1 goals per game across his first four years with Melbourne FC.

But it was his 2018 campaign where he first flashed his true potential, averaging numbers that wouldn't look out of place for mobile KPFs like Buddy Franklin or Jeremy Cameron. Jesse played an integral part in helping Melbourne break a decade-plus Finals drought, culminating in two September victories, and an honorable Preliminary Finals loss for a young-and-upcoming side.

He would then do a Luke Jackson and fly the coup home back to The West. His tenure at Fremantle isn't worth mentioning. Just incredibly disappointing.

He has been consistent and reliable when healthy since moving east to Greater Western Sydney. But we hadn't seen that 2018-level quality from him... Until now. Except that now he's playing deeper, a more FF KPF.

So, which version of Jesse Hogan is better? The mobile CHF who boasted a Buddy-like/Cameron-like stat line and was averaging 2.8 inside 50s per game? Or the stay-at-home FF leading the Coleman Medal and ranking first in total and per-game marks inside 50, second in total contested marks inside 50, and first in total contested marks inside 50?

Per-game averages:

2024 Hogan: 11.9 disposals (8.3 kicks; 3.6 handballs), 6.3 marks, 2.9 goals, 0.9 behinds, 1.4 tackles
2018 Hogan: 18.2 disposals (10.5 kicks; 7.7 handballs), 6.2 marks, 2.4 goals, 1.1 behinds, 2.0 tackles

He was an absolute gun in 2018, very underrated season.
That said, how good is it seeing him dominate up front and kick bags? So good. Will be All Australian this year and rightly so.

Must suck being a Freo fan and watching him kick arse like this.

If anything I think the majority of us are just happy he's in a good place, I think it's widely agreed he'd never have form like this in Perth, was just the wrong place for him to be.

The Colonel always had the skills and physical characteristics, and had enough stand out performances pre - resurrection, but obviously the scandals and erratum took alot of attention away.

These days he is at a club that seems to have a robust culture, good leadership, and he's matured just in time for a premiership tilt with a fair dinkum candidate. His contested marking and pack positioning has been incredible. His kicking despite giving me heart palpitations with the sewing machine run up has been excellent.

Can Giants win the flag if he has a bad day, is the question I believe. There will be a lot of oppo planning going into blunting him, so we need alternative goal kickers while the Colonel keeps the best oppo defenders occupied even if he isn't scoring.

Fair enough. You paid a fair price for him, and got pick 54 in return. It's an expensive lesson.

It feels like the best season by any key forward in a decade.

Josh Kennedy had better years pretty certain he had high 70's, Curnow kicked 76 or something last year. Hogan has been outstanding though

Jeremy Cameron kicked 65 goals in a 1 win team as a 20 year old. I feel like it’s a truly underrated season as a forward.

In answer to the OP's question, I think this season has been better than his 2018.

Sure, he pushed up the ground more and got more of the ball then - but to be honest, more players are capable of taking marks and getting the ball up and around the ground. The harder/rarer task - and therefore more valuable - is taking contested marks (particularly those inside 50 where you are often outnumbered) and kicking goals.

In 2018, Hogan took 24 contested marks, this season he has taken 54! and counting.
In 2018, he kicked 47 goals. This season, he has kicked 67 and counting.
(He is also clearly winning (i.e. taking a mark or winning the free) in 52% of his one on ones compared to 32% in 2018, despite playing closer to goal - where attention is at its strongest).

This season has clearly been his best, as good as his 2018 was.

Wouldn't have thought so. Only 1 metric but....

Goals + assists in a season 2015-2024...

1. L. Franklin '16 - 100
2. C. Curnow '23 - 100
3. E. Betts '16 - 99
4. J. Kennedy '15 - 98
5. J. Kennedy '16 - 97
6. T. Hawkins '22 - 94
7. L. Franklin '17 - 92
8. T. Walker '23 - 92
9. T. Greene '23 - 92
10. T. Lynch '16 - 90

Hogan is currently at 77.

How does that stack up?

Woah E Betts did a solid effort considering he was a small forward.

Honestly....
Im just happy hes alive. He was going down a dark path. We already lost McCarthy. That put it into perspective a little.

I think the real question is whether it is the best season by a GWS key forward in a decade.

The main competition is Jeremy Cameron in 2019.

Cameron: 24 games, 76 goals, 12 assists, 186 score involvements, 16 disposals a game, 6.5 marks, 1.3 contested
Hogan: 22 games, 67 goals, 10 assists, 146 score involvements, 12 disposals a game, 6.4 marks, 2.5 contested.

Close call.

Curnow was better in just about every aspect last year, same with the Texan.

Hogan's had a wonderful year though
Carlton and Crows both had two double up games against bottom 4 opposition.

Both grabbing 19 goals in two games against West Coast and 4 against Gold Coast.

GWS has played Richmond, North, West Coast and the Crows only once this season.

GWS has doubled up against Brisbane, Carlton, Hawthorn, Sydney and Gold Coast.

Its pretty safe to say Walker and Curnow got a much softer run at it.
