Our three first round draft picks (at least two of them) won’t be from WA. The problem with Baker’s supposed salary won’t be too dissimilar to what we’ll experience in three years when these guys are out of contract.

There’s always going to be a squeeze if you’re a good team and/or recruit good players.

wish we had Andrew from the GC
Watching Mac Andrew have so much success with his body shape makes me hope we give Sebit Kuek another year. I know Mac is a different level of prospect to Sebba and you can't compare them, but he is seriously talented himself. Built into some really good form before doing his knee last year. Even watching a clip the club posted the other day - how easy he jumped over Jacko is seriously impressive.

I always had major concerns his body shape would not work at AFL as a key forward, as defenders could put a body on him and prevent him from jumping. But I think if forward doesn't work out, the prospect of moving him back is a decent option as it allows him generally a free jump at the ball playing in defense.

Plenty of players ask for trades that aren't 'home'.

Lobb, Neale, Aish, Henry, Hill, Logue, Hogan etc
We really need to go over and above to have something about us that matches/tops the Vic-media-hype-vortex. Having the salesman seems to help (ie the way Hinkley and Fagan are wheeled out). But having a real point of difference in the lifestyle+professional & personal development areas is something the club needs to go to town on.

I don’t think either are ‘gettable’ this year.
I’m just entertaining the thought.
I’d be more than pumped with either.
I’m still very pumped if we land Baker.
Baker ? I am not so sure his age and what Richmond would ask won't
align in my mind .

Baker is an interesting one. We need to save some cash to sign Treacy on a big deal to secure him long term. We also need money for Brayshaw and we are targeting a big fish 2024/25. Will Baker make a big enough difference to justify the 800k salary he is asking? Would prefer to give the money to Treacy, Brayshaw and lure Warner over.
The real cost is 800k minus whatever the salary is if who he replaced on our list/best 22. That could be Walters or Switkowski going from the unsubstantiated rumours.

Regardless, you are quite correct in highlighting the need to manage salary cap. For me that may mean looking at some player trades, the obvious being Brodie, but maybe Erasmus? Both players who don't seem to have second positions and who it is difficult to see getting midfield game time.

If we are getting Baker and/or Warner these two would have to go.

Brodie’s career would be completely dead in the water, and I don’t then see Erasmus anywhere near the top 8 midfielders we would have

Agree with all (apart from Switkowski) and it is actually my point.

Depth is always good, but needs to be managed and used to rebalance the list via trading.

What Richmond ask possibly not. His age is more than fine. He’s 26.

I’m all for someone who can easily be best 22.

I don’t think we’re far from legit competing.
He is b22 but if we are to contend, we need to keep our squad together. The likes of Pearce, Aish, Brayshaw, Sharp and Banfield are coming to the end of their contracts.Treacy will also need to be extended on big money. If we want Warner, we have to manage the cap very carefully to keep the squad together. Baker is a great to have but he will take a decent chunk out of our cap. It raises the question is it worth it.

Josh Treacy isn't a high priority extension for me. He has two years to run and an opposition club offer would set market value for his extension to end of 2029 which I'd be looking to lock in by end of next season anyway.

The idea that Freo would trade a two remaining years contracted, twenty one year old, blossoming key forward is crazy which is why nobody in media would suggest it. No club has enough top ten picks to accommodate it. No club would ever entertain it.

It's only Banfield who is out of contract, a free agent that we could lose to a bigger deal elsewhere. The following year we need to pay Moose more money. Brayshaw should be signed by Christmas

Doing a complete rumour dump, make your own mind up on the state of play:

McDonald
  • Freo still keen
  • Supposedly set to re-sign but odd he hasn't don't it yet given it was reported that way months ago.
  • Have always heard he was happy there bar briefly after not making the GF side

Warner
  • Family supposedly moved with him to Sydney temporarily. Now want everyone back in WA
  • One parent is die hard WC
  • GF never moved over and they have been long distance his whole career so far. Also wants him back in WA now
  • Good friends particularly with Sharp
  • Freo are going extremely hard on this one and priority number one
  • People close think he will request a trade if they win a flag and don't think he extends.
  • Prominent Freo poster thinks parent control is so strong it would be WC
  • WC supporters with some surprisingly good Freo links have heard Freo if coming back

Baker
  • The club (Freo) thinks this is done and seem to keep telling people its done and locked
  • Richmond board now thinks he's staying on a 6 year deal
  • WC don't want to give up a good pick for him
